Once this concept is grasped, you can tie shit to your car from ikea using a simple rope, instead of noob straps, and it'll be there when you get home.


I picturing something that only Clark Griswold would do. LOL

It's like a fulcrum but round. The longer the fulcrum, the more you can lift.

Yeah, it's been a long ass time since I was in advanced physics, but I believe it's work= force x length. Or at least in terms of fulcrums. Work can be applied to electricity or temperatures and shit as well. Like a peltier device.

I have to wonder if elevators use the power of pulleys or just straight cable on motor?
The massive counterweights help. The leverage is probably through gears though. But I'm sure some mechanical advantage comes from pulleys.

The simplest ELI5 of how pulley's work is trading off speed for power.

An extremely simplified example.

1. You pull the pulley at 5 mph with little effort.
2. The heavy weight at the end of the pulley goes up at 1 mph.

This is how gearing works.

1. You spin your feet on a pedal at 60 rpm with little effort
2. The wheel spins at 10 rpm but easily climb a hill.

You can go the other way too, trade off power for speed

1. You spin your feet on a pedal at 10 rpm but with lot's of force.
2. The wheel spins at 60 rpm giving you a lot of speed.

You don't need more power, you just need to go faster. Which is easier because of the thinner air.

Aircraft burn a lot more fuel getting airborne than they do at cruising speed/altitude.
