It's not the clothes that make the man, it's what is underneath. No amount of money you spend on clothing is going to overcome a fat ass, a pasty white skinny geek, or a flabby gut.

Want to look good? Stop wasting you time and money at mall stores and following the crowd, and hit a gym.
Word. Saved me the effort of typing out the same thing. Somebody who's blowing $1500/year on clothes is doing it to look better, but they probably don't spend much time actually looking better; they're using that money to disguise an awful body. I buy cheap, crappy clothes infrequently and I know I get more looks from ladies than the average puffy guy my age who may be walking around with $400 in clothes on.

That's what makes me dashing in a suit, or out of it

What about a guy like me? Good-looking, charming, in-shape, and wearing $1,500 in clothing.
I thought you had a 36" waist?

Fvck, no; 32".
I was off; you wear 34" jeans!

Right. But my waist, measured is 32". Have you ever tried to squeeze your crotch into a pair of 32" jeans?

Fixed.

My wife said that if she saw you and your $1,500 clothing and popped collar she'd know immediately what a dumbass you were.

I don't "pop" my collar with everything I wear, and certainly not while wearing a $600 shirt. It's casual, buddy.

P.S. I won't apologize for being arrogant - I can afford it.

'Puffy' is obviously all wrong.

But a guy who is in decent shape if not "incredibly well built" and wearing $400 in clothes is going to get more attention from women* than a super-buff muscle man in TJ Maxx refuse.

* FWIW, the teeny bopper type and probably blonde bimbo crowd is going to prefer the muscle man regardless of what he is wearing (preferably a wife-beater), but less vacuous women prefer men with a sense of style over pure physical shape (although, it's clearly a factor....if you can't take care of yourself....)

Shopping at A/F and buying that crap shows absolutely zero sense of style. All it shows is ability to follow a fad.

I remember when MC Hammer pants were in "style". I didn't like them then because MY sense of style said hell no. I guess according to you I didn't have a sense of style then either because I didn't follow the fad.

To Amused/Skoorb:

Obviously, you're against spending money at these mall stores, regardless of the quality/style/brand. I absolutely agree with you that these clothes are not worth spending upwards of $80 on a pair of jeans or a shirt. But I am curious as to how you feel when someone can go into one of these stores and purchase the items for 1/4 of the price? I do feel that these stores offer above average quality items. Also, I do happen to like some of the styles (not the collar-popping teen clothing, but I do like the more traditional dressware). So whenever I can go into A&F and pick up a button down collar dress shirt with no outward logos or a pair of nice pants for $10-15, I don't hesitate.

FWIW: Whoever started the trend of making shirts with longer sleaves (I see this trend popping up more and more in "trendy" stores) is a genius in my mind. I have very long arms (wingspan is around 6'8" but I'm barely 6' tall) and these shirts are perfect. I no longer have to buy an XL or XXL to make it appear that the shirt fits. This is one reason I justify shopping at stores like A&F.

I didn't say "When you shop at A/F..."

I was just making a point about "sense of style" Vs. "sense of fad".

Geeks here are crazy about showing off their rigs and weird looking PCs. But, they wear crappy cloths thinking it looks all the same. Ah, nerds.

I guess one of the joys of being a guy who's married and in a job where business casual is the norm is that you don't have to worry much at all about clothes. I exercise regularly to keep myself in good shape and looking nice for my wife. And I do have nice enough clothes (as well as a few very nice suits for client presentations) but I don't spend a fortune on clothes. For most guys like me (and I imagine guys like Skoorb and Amused) clothes is clothes. Just a different mindset. Some guys here upgrade their video card every 3 months too. Even when I was super hardware geek when I was younger I never even came close to that and most definitely wouldn't do that now. But different strokes I suppose.

Perhaps if I was in an industry where image was more important (like my little brother in the music industry who spends a fortune on clothes) or if I was single I might look at it differently. Although even if I was single, I still doubt I'd spend that much more on clothes. If a girl's so superficial that she'd turn me down because I'm not wearing an expensive shirt then I don't need her anyway. Fortunately I don't have to deal with all that though.

Amen to that. Here's an Arrogant Bastard  for you to go along with today's topic.

That's why I gave the exception of the clearance racks. That's about the only place I'll buy anything from a Mall store.

I'm not bashing the clothes themselves. Just the idiots who pay the full markup on them.

Full price: Idiot
Sale price: Moderately ignorant
Clearance, outlet or TJmaxx style store: Brilliant.

I can get the same stuff at TJmaxx for a fraction of the price.

Clothes wear out too damn fast to pay that kind of money for them.

But then, I'm not a fashion plate metro.

AF clothes are higher quality than Old Navy. If you are saying that the fabric and stitch from AF is the same as Old Navy, you must be smokin crack!!!

The $80 shirts are nicest.

Bah. So long as you buy something simple that doesn't have millions of pockets and plastic trinkets, the stiching quality will be much better.

Brand only matters on shirts. Pants I could care less.

Shirts at least from AE. They're cheap enough. Only like 30 bucks. Although I don't mind paying up to 90 for a shirt if it's nice. *shrugs*

Shirts = AE, A&F, Hollister, Gap, Banana, A/E, and once in awhile Guess.

I mostly wear designer stuff but never pay retail. Retail is for suckers.

I'll agree to that. I've gotten some good quality Polo, A&F, AE, Banana stuff from TJMaxx.

It's your money, and you can spend it the way you want; however, if I had all the money in the world, I'd probably still choose to walk around in thrift store clothing and look like a hobo.

Also, I never particularly liked A&F. Some of their clothes are alright when on clearance (along with their sister-store, Hollister), but their staff just makes the store so incredibly unattractive and unappealing to me (in the sense that they're almost always rude, unwilling to help, etc)
