i personally do not like A&F stuff because of the actual style. i don't like that preppy washed out look. all the clothes there look like they have been washed 10x times before you even buy the clothes.

i prefer banana, dkny, lucky, claiborne, perry ellis, kenneth cole, calvine klein, etc.

I may be reading your post wrong, but if you think it requires wearing overpriced, mall store trendy clothes to get laid, you must be seriously lacking in other areas.

Man, I don't even know if I should jump in... what the heck, here is my take...

I am in engineering management (that means I am an engineering and a manager, not that I manage engineers) and as such wear a suit every day. While I do go somewhat thrifty on my suits ($500 max for a single suit) I prefer higher quality clothing whenever I am "out and about". This does NOT mean that I spend $100 on a friggen shirt. If you are smart and know how to shop you can come away with good quality clothes for not much money.

Some examples include the wrinkle and stain resistant shirts from Eddie-Bauer, I got a bunch when they were on sale for $30 each. Now, years later, these basic color shirts I bought are still "in style", don't cost much to maintain as you don't have to dry-clean or iron (except every once in a while), and are still in great shape. Another are the sales at Macy's (previously the bon here in the northwest). I get great quality clothes for cheap from brands I like such as polo, alfani, and others. I usually spend $100-150 at a Macy's sale but for that I get several outfits as well as random other seperates.

I also do some shopping at Target, Costco, Old Navy, and Fred Meyer. Things like socks, undershirts, boxers and other high-use, quick wearing out clothes I pick up there as they are cheaper. I am by no means a clothing snob but my wife and I do a good job of getting good clothes for less.

As for the actual topic at hand, I don't like A&F simply because of their marketing campaign. I have never tried on their clothes or entered their stores and never plan to, simple as that. If you are more concerned with the brand name than the quality then you have issues, and if you think a shirt is worth $100 you have even more problems.

-spike

P.S. I perfer having $1500 of gadgets on my person than $1500 of clothes. That probably makes me a geek but hey, the wife approves so who am I to complain?

Old navy is gay, for the record

A&F is good stuff, as is Hollister clothing.

I am starting to prefer Express for Men though, they have some very very nice polos and button-ups that I've seen, might start shopping there

All quality, very nice clothing. Though very expensive. I only buy stuff on sale at any store though, I'm a tightwad.

Oh and Old Navy or TJ Maxx does not have nearly the quality of clothing that Hollister, AF, AE, Aero, Express, or even Zumies carries. Check the thread count, feel the clothing, they all last a great long time and feel great and airy to wear.

TJ Maxx carries the SAME stuff. Just last years close outs rather than this years trends. TJ Maxx is a TRUE outlet, not the kind that you find at outlet malls that sell cheaper made versions.

The only difference is the price and atmosphere.

I'll stack the longevity of my clothes against anyone else's.

And let's face it, if you're a trendy dresser, why the fsck do you care if clothes last for years? You wont be wearing them but for a year or two anyhow.

Sales are just a little less stupid than retail. Clearance and outlets (REAL outlets) are the better choice.

I can get the same stuff at TJmaxx for a fraction of the price.

Clothes wear out too damn fast to pay that kind of money for them.

But then, I'm not a fashion plate metro.

AF clothes are higher quality than Old Navy. If you are saying that the fabric and stitch from AF is the same as Old Navy, you must be smokin crack!!!

The $80 shirts are nicest.

No, I'm saying TJMaxx sells the SAME STUFF at a fraction of the price.

Outdated fashion for half the price. Big Whoop.

Maybe when you grow up, and stop thinking you are defined by what you wear and what music you listen to, you'll understand.

Some people like fashion, and want to look good. Not everyone is fine with wearing crappy looking kmart or cosco brand clothing. Maybe when you grow up, you'll understand that fact.

DON'T FVCK WITH K-MART! (I work there).

That was my complain, I can't buy shirts from regular places. I'm pretty well built and most of the shirts don't fit me unless I buy one size larger than I need. For example I have 32 inch waist, however if I buy 32" pants they won't fit my thies. So at regular department stores I end up having to buy 34" pants and have them fall off my ass.
could be worse, I have a 30" waist, and 36" inseem, and I have large quads and no butt. So far I've only found 2 brands that have 1/2 way descent room in the legs, one is Calvin Klien, that I can barely find and they are $100 each, I just found last year that Lee Dungaree also makes jeans with the same fit for about $30-35 each (and I can catch these on sale sometimes for $15 each)

For dress pants, I have to buy custom taylored. (this can cost anyware from $100-$150 a pair)

I'm nearly in the same situation. 32" waist, 36" length. NOTHING FITS!

Oh well. I don't give a fvck. No one I hang out with cares that much about what clothes you're wearing anyways.

I've got to stop assuming people on these forums socialize in the same kinds of circles my GF and I do. I suppose if I worked a nine to five job, came home, had a few beers, played with the kids, mowed the lawn, and had a weekend BBQ with "sports fan" friends, I would simply wear basic jeans and a tee.

There's nothing wrong with that, but it isn't the life we lead.

This is making me laugh...

If you want to show off with clothes, get the rip off stuff and show people your name brands.
Otherwise, wear generic stuff, and remember that life is too short to show off with clothes alone.

This is a funny as hell topic on what people have to say.

Well, I don't like your attitude, but I have to say you are right. Most people here are probably younger than me, but I assure you cannot afford to wear anything less smart than Emporio Armani or Dolce&Gabbana or Paul Smith. You just cannot go to work with wathever you want: image DOES is of critical importance. I am not saying that this is a right thing, but it does is the way it is. Probably the fact that I live in New York and Paris is important, it for sure might be different in other areas. It's interesting to note, however, that in Paris people dress very very high during job hours or when going to clubs, but feel free to go to their cafè wearing pajamas (literally) on sunday morning.

Almost everything I have is name brand, high quality clothing.

The difference is, I don't walk into mall stores and pay 5 times the price for them.

Some people want to be cheap for the purposes untold, in which they will be able to get something of a little more quality in something else. People spend their money in different ways. No need to get angry about someone's opinion on buying needs. Just gotta pay the bills you know?

Exactly. And most people are fooled into thinking that these stores use better quality material. My dad says that the material tends to be worse than what you'd find with a $5-10 shirt.

strange set of responses in this thread. IF someone said "omg i love A&F, and i'll only buy their clothes because they're cool," then some of these responses are ok, but if someone says "wow A&F clothes are actually comfortable, and durable, well worth the extra $20," (like the OP) I don't see a problem with someone appreciating quality. As long as the person doesn't choose clothing according to current trends, but according to who they are, that's fine by me!

I wear old navy clothes! and buy clothes maybe once every 4-6 months, or whenever my girlfriend makes me.

I dont want to shop at A&F... I just want a copy of the catalog with all the nekked chix.
That being said... I will not criticize anyone who shops at a store who puts nekked chix in their clothing catalogue.

Fvck, that would be difficult. I'm guessing every pair of jeans you find is too short on you? I guess you would have to get things custom made, if you wanted a perfect fit.

For jeans, I prefer Diesel, they have the best, sexiest fit of any jeans I've tried. The price of them is disgusting, tho. :| I also quite like Energie jeans.
