This is about his tenth offense. Once it happened when I was here with him. He put a marker in his underwear and went to his room and colored all over a blanket. He understood that night not to do that again.

Bad decision on the wife's part but what can you do. There are times when I don't dare criticize my wife if I feel she made an unintelligent decision. I don't agree with every decision she makes with the kids, but I've learned to choose my battles carefully. I have a six and three year old. I expect the three year old to sometimes color on things he isn't supposed to color. The six year old on the other hand has learned how to clean walls and carpet from previous actions.

What sucks is we have five months left on our lease (apartment). It looks like my security deposit is now gone.

Have you ever gotten a security deposit back? I don't know anyone who has, regardless of how the place looked after they moved out. Even my mom, who's a neat freak lost both deposits she made when she was waiting for her house to be built.

Never, ever say anything like that in the heat of the moment. Your wife was correct, it wasn't helping the situation "right now". Right now, the mess needed cleaning and the kid needed punishment. Those should have been your only two priorities. Talk to her in person, AWAY FROM THE KIDS, the next day. Get on the same page as her on your own time, not in panic time around your kids.

What good can possibly come from arguing in the presence of your children? Is that how you want your children to treat their spouses when they grow up (remember they'll do anything you do, but 10 times worse)? Think about it.
