From your link:
"Because the .223 [HP] begins to break up on impact, it has less potential for damage or injury than the 12 ga. in the event of a ricochet. The .223 [HP] is obviously safer in an urban environment than the 12 ga. with slugs or buckshot."

"The 55 grain HP .223 has less penetration than any of the other ammunition tested. Based on the results of this testing, there appears to be no basis for concern regarding the over penetration of the .223 [HP] round. In fact, it seems even safer in this regard than .40 S&W handgun ammunition."

That proved my point. Overpenetration of rifle calibers are the issue here, and the link you gave states there is NO BASIS FOR CONCERN.

You were quoted as saying a 5.56 will not go through a wall. Wall with no 's', as in one fucking wall.

I am completely serious. 9mm will go through the wall, 5.56 mm rifle projectiles will not.

People posted evidence to the contrary, now you are all up in arms saying it wont overpenetrate and claiming you were right all along.

Get real.

I said a WTF when I read that too. Regardless of what he meant or not, there is no way a two pieces of drywall and some insulation will stop a 5.56/.223 projectile. Hell, even a decent Beeman air rifle in .177/.20 can penetrate drywall, I have done that myself.

Love movingthegoalposts.jpg, that will come in handy around here.

When the .223 [HP] was shot through he wall it began to fragment and as a result penetrated the gelatin only 5.5".

Just passed the Calif handgun test and got the certificate. What's a good handgun for beginner, under 500$ ?

My local shop's ad:
Springfield XD (9mm or .40) =490$
Beretta 9mm = 400$
Smith & Wesson 9VE (SW9VE) =380$

Find a range with rental guns, ask them to show you different calibers and the difference between single action and double action, etc.

Then decide which one will work best for you.

I second that. I've got the XD9 subcompact. It has a 3" barrel and is small enough for concealed carry. It's got a 10, 13, and 16 round magazine that fits it. It also comes with a nice case, holster, speed loader, and mag holder. They're all cheap, but it's nice to have accessories considering some guns don't offer them.

You might want to look at the 4" and 5" barrel lengths and make a decision if you don't want to conceal carry and are looking for a range gun. The XD9 Subcompact's 3" barrel is difficult to master at a gun range. You have to use a very steady hand to keep your groupings reasonable at 25 yards.

Thanks for the tips guys. I like the grip of the xd compact as it fits me perfectly. But the handle is somewhat short and there's little room for my last digit/pinky finger. I also have a Glock 19 in mind and have yet to test it. My friends Glock 30 sf compact feels clunky on the handle. They have that brick-like, boxy design and don't naturally snug into your hand. Or that I have small hands. Lol

Why do you think civilians need firearms? Pretty much every country in this world disallows purchase of guns and firearms.

Ok, I'll bite:

Let's say I own no firearms, but am a history nerd, see some entertainment appeal in target shooting.

What's the best way to get, say, an M1 Garand and proper education on how not to kill myself with it? Local CCs have firearms safety courses, but is that enough? Is a vintage/historic firearm something I could find at a gunshow, or am I stuck buying online? Which online dealers, if any, are the least bit respectable?

Most (if not all) dictators who managed to roll over their own populace did so by first disarming the public. Also, the notion that passing laws against gun ownership prevents crime is laughable. Since only the law abiding would bother to obey such laws, only the lawless end up armed. They and the police. Do you really want to live in a society where only criminals, the police, and the military are armed? When the shit hits it, the cops will be unable to "protect" anyone, the military will be enforcing martial law (as long as they can), and the criminal will be looking for you and what you have. Thanks, but if I end up having to defend my own home against that, I'd rather not have to do it with a pitchfork and rocks.

Is making a homemade gun illegal if I never take it outside? If so, why?

if you are looking to have a civilized discussion, maybe you should start with reasons and evidence why you think they shouldn't be allowed ('everyone else is doing it' is a poor start). If you are just trolling, carry on. Hope you leave hungry.

To broad of a question. A homemade gun can be a lot of things, some legal and some not. Narrow down exactly what you are talking about to get a more specific answer.

Regardless if you take it outside or not if it's illegal it's illegal, it's just a matter of whether you get caught or not.

CMP is best bet but you do have to meet some requirements.
You can find plenty of surplus military and historical guns at gun shows but imo, especially m1 garands, are overpriced at gun shows.
