i read it yesterday - it is truly impressive. yet he seemed very unhappy. sounds like he pretty much hated it by the end, though he did end up with millions

i would have no problems doing something like that for a few years and calling it quits.

That would be awesome, I'd try to tough it out for a couple years then retire. Then find a part time shift work job somewhere just to keep busy and have a bit of extra cash flowing in (not that I'd need it), while having lot of spare time to do stuff I like.

I got into the wrong line of work apparently. I think I could sell my soul for a few million dollars over a few years so that then I could do what I enjoy for the rest of my life. Seems like it's a better way to go than spending years building wealth, then being too old to enjoy it.

I read that article. Somehow, at the end we are to feel sorry for this guy and humbled by his recognition that chasing excess wealth is a dependency.

And yet, he's still got millions of dollars in the bank. Made by well, stealing, or taking part in an activity where people steal, both individually and as a group. It's like an ex- drug dealer telling you he realized drugs kill, and that now he gives anti drugs speeches, then goes back home on his yacht.

arbitrage isnt the same as stealing

It's stealing from people who leave their money on the sidewalk in the hope that the money fairies will give them even more money when they come back to check on it.

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of these people.

Im always amazed at how much those guys make. Then i realize they work shitty hours, have no vacation time, and overall just devote their time to work. After i think about all that i go nah ill keep my current job and just enjoy what i have. I live cheap anyways so 900k would just by a hell of a lot of top ramen.

I'd do that for a year and call it quits... Of course, that'd never happen, so here we are.

Most people are unhappy in their jobs. Being able to work a job you don't enjoy for three years and then retire is probably better than working a job you don't enjoy for 30-40 years to be able to retire.

Interesting article. Yet I doubt it will be able to even slightly dent the Wall Street mentality. For every trader willing to leave there are dozens lining up to take his/her place.

Meh, he needs to work that job for a few years, then go do something he loves.

Heck, even 1 year of pocketing $3 million is 30 years worth of pay for someone making $100k. His one year reward is what many people take a life time to earn.

This.

My buddy who works for exxon went to Dubai/Iraq for three years. Made infinite money during his time there. He can retire and have no debt including an amazing home right now. He said he was sad because he missed out on his late 20's. He doesn't realize though that he doesn't have to do another thing for the rest of his life if he doesn't want to. That type of freedom is priceless. At my current state I will have to work for the another 20 years to accomplish what he has.

I would tell anyone with the opportunity to make that kind f dough for a few years to take it.

He is completely right about one thing:

All those morons inventing shit to trade like derivatives could vanish right now and the world would be fine.

Our economy, in fact our entire country, is a joke because people who simply engage in a glorified form of gambling can make so much money while people who actually change, improve, and save lives get scraps.

This isn't a cry for socialism or some other form of economy, I'm simply pointing out the travesty that is the human propensity for extreme greed.

Ahh, nothing the masses love more than a reformed sinner.

All I see is someone who feels guilty about how much he made, and now feels he is entitled to lecture other people about unfair "the system" is.

That was a good read. No real surprises there. Lots of stuff the really rich folks use to make money don't really matter in the large scheme of things. I don't fault them. It's what they do and the work they enjoy pays big $$$. not really much we can do about it anyway.

I am However not in the wrong line of work.

I've always been envious of people who can create "things". I had friends who could paint or draw cartoons, i had friends that were fantastic with metal and wood, making chairs, boats etc. I was always so envious of them. I was always the one who never really had any creative talent.

IT gave me a way to create something. Be it a network, a piece of software or a cluster of some sort . It might not be as awesome or as tangible as what my friends create, but it gives me a feeling of satisfaction.

It doesn't pay as big as wall street, but it doesn't pay all that bad either

Everyone who responded saying they would do what he did for a few years and get out didn't read the article or didn't understand it. Our financial elite are addicted to their bonuses like a crack addict is addicted to his drug. These people have lost all perspective on reality and suck the country's wealth upwards. They don't do it because they're smarter or better or harder working but because they have a pyschological problem.

The key to happiness is being satisfied with what you have, not craving after that which you don't. I'll take an engineering job with interesting problems to solve and comparatively low pay over any position in management or finance because I enjoy it.
