Im Jumping ship, which mobo?

I know i know, i have a great system and blah blah blah.


The point is im doing it, im jumping ship and nobody can stop me so help me pick a good mobo.

Im going X58, i figured both sockets are dead at least 1366 has 32nm 6 cores available if you have $1000 to spend later on a CPU upgrade lol. Well that and the PCIe controller being on the chipset not the CPU can yield a better OC with less voltage/heat or so i have been told.

Im going to get a 920 DO and overclock it to the max with a large air cooler like the Noctua NH-D14 or Megahalems. So OC ability is very important, as well as proper VRM and chipset cooling.

Ram will be Corsair XMS3 3x2GB DDR3, either 1600 or 2000. I do not want memory to be a limiting factor in the OC and since the 920 has the lowest multiplier i figured i would need to crank up the FSB to hit 4Ghz, and then ram would come into the picture.

Must have USB 3 and SATA 3, esata would be a bonus.

Sound not relevant, i have a ASUS Xonar STX, ok i guess its relevant in the fact it needs to fit into the mobo with 2 dual slot GPU's.

GPU will be 460, soon to be SLI.

Taking all that into account i have come up with the ASUS P6X58D-E but am open to all opinions and options.

Budget under $300 for the mobo.

Why are you changing systems, It will not really seem any faster. Just get a good SSD and a new video card and you'll notice a much bigger difference.

A few reasons.

1. Current system parts being replaced will go to girlfriends comp, then her leftovers to the server, and the servers to a HTPC im currently building. So this will gain every pc in my house a upgrade and i can build a HTPC at the end.

2. I want ATI and Nvidia support for multiple GPU's. As i have no brand loyalty i always buy whats the best bang for the buck at the time and want my options open GPU wise. Im not interested in hacked drivers to get SLI working on a AMD chipset.

3. I have the cash

4. I plan on getting a SSD as soon as intel releases their next gen drives, should be good for current gen prices and ill grab a vertex 2 cheap then.

5. Intel murders AMD clock for clock, AMD's 1055T with 6 cores at 2.8Ghz cant even beat Intels quad i7 860 at 2.8Ghz in most benchmarks, this is kinda sad with a 2 core advantage.

6. When i built my current system over a year ago, almost 2 i think, i wanted a i7 but they were way overpriced and the mobos were also way overpriced, so was the ram. And plain and simple i could not afford it, i had just got a new job and had very little money. Now i have the cash to spend and the system is reasonably priced for the performance offered IMO.

The motherboard is a good choice. You won't see any real use advantage of 2000mhz DDR3, and none of the slower speeds will limit your OC because you can just set the divider to whatever ratio you need to keep it in spec. However, the price gap is much more narrow now between sets with higher frequencies and faster timings, so you can probably afford any one you want.

If you check around, I believe you will do just about as well on price with an Intel 930 instead of the 920, and it will give you a higher clock rate and a better OC solution.

The 920 D0 vs the 930 is a toss up. Both clock just as well as the other with no real advantages either way. I have both and the 920 D0 is slightly easier to get to 4.2, daily at 4.0 (Corsair H50 push pull cooler)

For a Mobo I like that Asus, but don't sleep on the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5. Nothing like being able to clock and still having 10 Sata ports.

The ASrock X58 extreme is a very high quality budget board. If not there's a great deal on the MSI bing bang Xpower open box for 220$ right now on Newegg.

I was under the impression the 930 was CO only, i want the newest stepping do i not? for max OC?

I think almost all the 930s are SLBKP D0 stepping revision 6 now. Your chances of getting a good clocking one are the same with either, so I'd go for the higher multiplier as long as it doesn't cost any more than +$10.

thanks for the input, my local shop sells a 920 guranteed DO for $313

The 930 is $299 but no gurantee on stepping.

I'll have to think about it.

So this will be my last post till friday mid day. Taking my PC apart for the transplant as im picking up the parts first thing in the morning.

ASUS P6X58D-E
i7 930
Corsair XMS3 3x2GB 1600 9-9-9-24
Noctura NH-D14
MSI Cyclone 460 1GB

Assuming everything works my next post will be with that system. If it doesnt all work and something is defective ill be posting from my laptop, and that would suck.

Any last min suggestions(other than dont do it lol)?

That does look like a sweet board but could use one more PCIe 1x above the first GPU slot, and is $60 more than the Asus. If it had 1 more PCIe 1x slot i would consider it.

And most of my friends think im insane for jumping from a OC Phenom II to i7 and are all telling me not to do it, but in 2 hours it will be too late lol.

Well, I'll be honest and say you probably are unless you can get the i7 past 3.8ish. Even then, it's a lot of money for a somewhat marginal upgrade.
