And, when you go to coffee shops around this area, there are a lot of asian kids, especially on weekends. They are very loud and have no consideration for the people around them. This generates many stereotypes and fuels racism.

The overall feeling I get from the majority korean population here is that they are materialistic. They always talk about cars, houses, jobs, Ivy League schools; it gets quite annoying. I just want to say that I am against this kind of lifestyle, and I do not represent this group of korean people. People like this obviously ruin it for others. Although it's not right, society has a way of blaming a particular race whenever something bad happens.

sounds like koreans here in socal. lol. :Q

OMG QFT. I am half-Armenian, and because I go to an Armenian private school (AGBU), my friends are very materialistic and drive Benz's and BMW's and throw huge, extravagant parties and wear very expensive clothes. Having said that, my area (Northridge/Porter Ranch) has been flooded by Koreans lately. Whenever I'm at the Starbucks with a few friends, seeing them in the parking lot or watching them doing things really makes me want to punch one of them in the face so they can shut the fvck up. That said, I am not a racist (even though I obviously like my own race better than Asians, it's predisposed genetically), I just hate pricks. Check my above post.

I would say Armos are worse than koreans by about a factor of 1.2. Persians are worse than koreans by about a factor of 1.5 (in the materialistic wannabe baller sense).

Heh, don't even get me started about Persians. My Persian-Armenian friends at school drive 760Li's and S550's and Porsches to school, and they're only 16/17 years old.

Referring to the OP on whether I like you.. I never really cared before.. You think I really care now?

You do something worth respect and you earn my respect, otherwise you're just another person to me..

No...OrooOroo is an idiot. His most recent post just confirms the stupidity of all of his idiotic ramblings. Sounds like he's just bitter. Probably had bad experiences with Koreans and decided to lash out with a temper tantrum.

lol i have nothing against koreans, what i say is simply true. as i said, it wasn't long ago that most of korea was agricultural. simply a fact. as for the melodramatic soaps that now do so well in asia come from korea, why? because they are not as reserved as other asian people.

and well the other fact is that koreans out of asian groups in the us are one of the lesser well off.

of course revealing this kind of stuff would make a korean mad..as evidenced in this thread

Anything's possible. I'm Chinese too but I don't recall ever hearing this view from my parents so I wouldn't know. From the aspect of marriage, I would think most asian parents would prefer their sons/daughters marry someone from the same ethnic asian branch.

From my personal experience, I must admit that I probably stereotype Korean males as being "tougher" than other asian males -- just something about the way some of the ones I've seen walk or look or something. I've never had any problems with them though.

the term is macho.

only because Koreans were the last to start immigration. no major group of koreans came to the US till the early 70's. all other groups started way before Koreans.

There are plenty of materialistic people of every race/ethnicity. I can't stand any of them. There are nice people and then there are people you just can't stand who only talk about how good their cars are, ask if X salary is good, etc.

Oh wait... this Cho(bo) fellow railed against materialism/hedonism as well... the difference is he was loco and used it as an excuse to feed his violent hatred of humanity.

My generation (college/high-school age kids) simply doesn't appreciate how easy they have it. For some reason they act like they're entitled to opulence and living well. News flash: the reason we live so well is because of those who have gone before us and secured our liberties and freedom through blood and tears. A lot of people my age would do well to remember that...

My generation knows nothing of self-sacrifice and citizenship. Maybe it's because we haven't had a wide-scale conflict like WWI/WWII, Vietnam, or Korea to wake us up. Sure, Iraq is there, but to most people it's a distant conflict that has no visible impact on everyday life. If anything, it just increases cynicism and apathy. People would appreciate what they have more if they experienced war rationing and the "Home Front". I don't care what your beliefs about Iraq are, but don't sully our nation's armed forces or our national pride by condemning the soldiers. A soldier's life ain't something to be envied. They deserve our respect and support because they go through hell every day. If you're going to blame someone, blame the damned politicians.

It pains me to say it, but my generation acts like a bunch of 'spoiled rich kids'.

doesn't matter when you come over. if an indian gets over here on an h1b and is an engineer he's an engineer even if he came recently.

you are not too smart.

of course it matters when immigration starts. very very few 3rd generation korean americans are adults. the first large group of koreans started to come over in the early 70's. immigration was different then vs now, hiring foreigners was different, you didn't see as many skilled workers brought over at the time you see now.

most people came over from korea with very little money and have actually done quite well with the opportunity given them.

fact is, 2nd and 3rd generation korean americans are materialistic because they know what it was like to be poor.

Yep, neither of my parents came over until the early 80s with their respective families. When you are struggling to learn English, what do you do? My parents have probably had at least twenty different jobs between them, including factory worker, janitor, housekeeper, etc. Hard, honest work.

My dad went through undergrad, master's, and Ph.D programs and is now a professor at a small college (makes about as much as a schoolteacher, but is happy there). My mom's a nurse. They both speak almost flawless English now after 25+ years in the US and made it a point to speak mostly English at home (maybe why I can't really speak Korean...). It was only in 2005 that we bought our first home. It took my parents over 25 years to settle down and there are plenty of first-generation Korean immigrants like that. Without knowing English well enough and having the financial backing (or working night jobs) to go to college, most of them end up being restaurant owners, grocers, dry cleaners, convenience store owners - small business owners. I consider myself lucky to have parents who actually were able to go through significant schooling. They made many sacrifices to stay home and take care of me and my sister despite bills to pay and the schooling. We were dirt poor for most of my life and it's pretty much since 2004 that we've been financially sound.

PlatinumGold is exactly right about why first-generation Koreans are not as well-off. I would bet that second-generation born-in-America kiddos are doing much better though, with the pressure that Korean parents put on their kids to do well in school.

Edit: Edited for clarity - I think you can figure out what banana means

i have many good korean friends... and they're highly cultured.

what culture the koreans DO have is mostly derived from Confucionism. when i was in Korea, i met a chinese person studying in korea. he said to me, he was amazed at how confusionist the koreans were. he felt that korea was the last bastion of confucionism.

so, yes, koreans have no culture, except that the culture they do have is chinese.

Lmao... wow.. we have seriously retarded ppl here. yes because of two narrow minded idiots, korea doesnt even have its own culture.

so...wtf do the 1.2 billion chinese who live outside of shanghai do? there are more laboring chinese (as a percentage) than koreans.

i would say koreans are the jews of asia. persecuted throughout it's history, small land, low population, fighting off invasions. extremely hard working, very entrepreneurial, and everything they touch turn to gold. sons go to ivy league become lawyers, doctors, ibankers.

sounds like a jealous chinaman.

i'm quoting myself here, but i'm going to have to explain myself it seems.

my point with that confucionism quote IS, korean culture is soo closely tied to chinese culure that to deny one is to deny the other. the historical culture of korea is tied in more closely to china then the US is to greece. Korean language is based on Chinese even more than English is based on latin.

it's laughable that any chinese person would deny korean culture.

Koreans do make a use of Chinese chracters, however Korean language is NOT tied to Chinese.
Koreans speak far different than Chinese and Korean writing called 'HanGul' is also far different than Chinese.

Exactly. China and Korea has been in contact for more than 5k years. Of course we have more cultural ties. (US to Greece? wtf?) Korean language is NOT based on Chinese language.

And please DO give an example of the Major Korean culture that is derived from confusionism.

America is brain washing Americans to hate on all other races eventually, so the Americans won't feel bad for taking over their goods while pretending to protect them and spread the peace. I personally don't really believe the news, for all I know it could of been a hired shooter to start chaos and distract the public for whatever reason. I know people are dead, that's all what matters to me, god bless them. Who really knows anymore ???

I'm not going to go through 13 pages of posts, but I just want to make my post and be out. I look Korean, but I'm American... Korean-American... whatever you want to call me. I was born in America and probably more "American" than some hardcore Americans.

This killer came to America at the age of 8 and lived in America for most of his life. It doesn't matter whether he had nationality in Korea, America, or Africa. When someone lives in a country as long as he has, he is assimilated to that country. This was an American that killed all these people. The name of some country on a piece of paper doesn't change that fact.

This in fact may have fueled his rampage. People treating him like some foreigner because of his look and name when in fact he was more "American" than anyboy else.

this Asian councilman guy from NYC John Liu played the race card yesterday at a press conference.

i was shaking my head as i hear him speak... WHY!
why go there when no one is blaming racism!

I'm an Asian (Chinese), and it's never a concern that there will be backlash myself after the news broke out that Cho was Korean, why bring this up! god i hate politicians
