This wont be a huge issue i think. Personally it doesnt really matter what background he came from or what nationality...I dont see why this is a big deal.

Well...from one point of view it kind of gets rid the blaming of american culture and how we are brought up. We cant blame american upbringing on this guy and so hopefully the world doesnt point to us again and say "see, americans are ****** crazy"

Again I dont think the majority of people are going to look at you and think..omg he is gonna shoot up the school. If you live in redneck country you might get some assholes tho.

My college has Koreans as the majority of the student body. The nationality of the student didn't seem to change anything.

No it doesn't. He has lived in the US since he was 8, as mentioned earlier in this thread.

You can easily blame American upbringing

I still love my Korean movies and still respect all races. I don't care what race he was because this can happen with any race.

I don't even look at race. The fact that he was a human being and could do this is unspeakable for any human being no matter what.

Race is a factor when you think about how people are raised. Is it a huge problem in this case? I don't think we know yet, but unless this is clearly a cultural issue, I don't think we're going to have a lot of problems with race here.

Take Islamic terrorists. I know I'm going to be flamed here, but you have to say there's something about the culture and religion that causes terrorism to run wild when you look at a certain group of people. Sure not everyone may not believe that, and I'm willing to believe that Islam does not teach us to be terrorists, but anyone with a little logic will have to admit that culture is an issue here. Maybe this is why we see anti-Muslim movements all the time, and racial slurs being thrown around. I'm not saying that's justified, and racism is never justified, but if you need to identify a root cause for hate against a race, there is definitely a cause.

If this turns out to be some "OMG I got 6-ling rushed in SC" ordeal, yea, we're going to have major criticism about how Koreans game nonstop and how they have starcraft replay channels on TV that run 24/7 Starcraft replays. You can't say race is not a factor. Race is directly linked to culture which is directly linked to how people are raised. If upbringing is a huge issue, you can also blame the parents.

Of course, ideally, we leave race out of it all, and instead of blaming and hating, we focus on healing, education, and prevention.

its a pretty messed up world we live in. I was pissed about the big deal people made with imus, and now people are making a big deal about this persons race.

I don't care, nobody else should...doesn't matter what race the guy who killed people was, it wouldn't change the fact that he killed people. It wouldn't excuse it, it DOESN'T explain it, so who cares?

I would have loved to correct those people...but understand your reluctance to do so.

If what you say is true, then the U.S. has some big time problems with higher brutal crimes in developed countries and these school incidents (I posted these earlier):

Oct. 2, 2006: A 32-year-old gunman enters an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and holds 10 girls hostage before shooting them. Five girls are killed, and five wounded. The gunman also kills himself.

Sept. 13, 2006: Kimveer Gill, 25, opens fire at Dawson College in Montreal, killing one woman and injuring 20 people.

Aug. 30, 2006: 19-year-old man in Hillsborough, N.C., kills father, then opens fire at Orange High School, wounding two students before surrendering to police.

Nov. 8, 2005: Student at high school in Jacksboro, Tenn., shoots and kills assistant principal. Principal and another assistant principal wounded.

March 21, 2005: 16-year-old boy in Red Lake, Minn., fatally shoots grandfather and grandfather's partner at home, then goes to Red Lake High School, where he kills five students, a teacher and a security guard before committing suicide.

Feb. 3, 2004: 14-year-old boy in Palmetto Bay, Fla., stabs and slits throat of 14-year-old classmate at Southwood Middle School.

Sept. 24, 2003: 15-year-old boy shoots two classmates at Rocori High School in Cold Spring, Minn. Both students died.

March 5, 2001: 15-year-old freshman opens fire with .22-calibre pistol at Santana High School in Santee, Calif., killing two students and injuring 13 others.

April 20, 2000: Four students and one staff member wounded in knife attack at Cairine Wilson High School in Orleans, Ont. Occurs on first anniversary of Columbine massacre.

Dec. 6, 1999: 13-year-old student fires at least 15 shots at Fort Gibson Middle School in Fort Gibson, Okla., wounding four classmates.

Nov. 19, 1999: 12-year-old boy shoots 13-year-old girl in head at school in Deming, N.M. Girl dies next day.

April 28, 1999: 14-year-old boy shoots two students, one fatally, at W.R. Myers High School in Taber, Alta.

April 20, 1999: Two heavily armed teenagers rampage through Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., killing 12 students and one teacher before committing suicide.

Unless you're walking around with a gun, looking for a reason to kill and / or stalking someone that's not returning your emails anymore, I don't care.

I am asian. (Not Korean) I am on campus right now. Our engineering build rents two floors to the US Army. I took an elevator to the 4th floor along with three caucasian guys. One of which is in uniform. On the 2nd floor, the elevator door opened and an elderly caucasian professor entered. He took a glance at me and then turned and said to the uniformed person "Do we need the army here to protect us now from all the psychos?" They all laugh. I am not amused. :|

Just like anyone else, hearing the news in the beginning has been really uncomfortable. It reminded me of that Columbine High. Incident where some of the people I knew back then were shot. Now that I hear that this rampage was done by a S. Korean, I feel sick in the stomach. That would be because I, too, happened to be S. Korean studying abroad.

I, of course, do not think the killer being Korean has anything to do with this rampage. An individual psycho is a psycho no matter what his nationality happens to be. I do not see any connection between him being psycho to nationality of his. Damn?.I?m already defending myself.

Anyway, I?m curious how this would impact views on Koreans in general. From what I know and based on my experiences, most of Americans can?t distinguish the difference between N. Korea and S. Korea. Whenever there was a N. Korea issue, I hated how I had to explain that I?m from S. Korea and the differences in between N and S Korea is so huge that it?s not even comparable. On top of that, now that this has happened, I?m just speechless.
What do you Americans think this about the killer being Korean? Beside you, what do you think how other Americans would view it?

Well?.this whole situation where I feel sorry for the dead, worrying about myself as well as other Koreans just make me sick in the stomach.

WTF? The only difference between a North and South Korean is a political boundry drawn on a map. I doubt anyone in the world can tell the difference other than a Korean and them only after conversing with the person.

Someone beat you with the stupid stick? N. Korea is communist, repressed, etc. S. Korea is a modernized country, with lots of freedoms. It's like saying East & West Germany during the cold war were the same.

Read much? Place a North and South Korean in a room and tell me which is which without talking to them. Show me where I said the 2 countries were the same? Perhaps you and the OP were the ones beaten with a stupid stick. Most Americans understand very well the differences between the 2 countries political systems etc. I took the OPs original post to mean that Americans could not tell the difference between a Korean from NK and a Korean from SK and that is what I was addressing.

To the point of his original post however I doubt there will be any backlash against Koreans or Asians in general due to this incident. There is no history of Asians committing terrorist acts in the US or in the world generally.

Yes it's easy - the skin and bones is N Korean and the fat guy is S Korean

haha...

that made me laugh... i know asians who've experienced that type of racism quite often around here (there's a military base near my college). no surprise the korean went berserk.

edit: if it's not outright racial slurs, whites will demean their physical appearances / accents.

to be honest, I think its built into their culture. There are of course exceptions, but generally I've been told by my fellow korean friends, that Koreans have a very strong sense of pride as well as a heavy concept of "keeping face" or as we usually say "keeping up with the joneses".
