Just like anyone else, hearing the news in the beginning has been really uncomfortable. It reminded me of that Columbine High. Incident where some of the people I knew back then were shot. Now that I hear that this rampage was done by a S. Korean, I feel sick in the stomach. That would be because I, too, happened to be S. Korean studying abroad.
I, of course, do not think the killer being Korean has anything to do with this rampage. An individual psycho is a psycho no matter what his nationality happens to be. I do not see any connection between him being psycho to nationality of his. Damn?.I?m already defending myself.
Anyway, I?m curious how this would impact views on Koreans in general. From what I know and based on my experiences, most of Americans can?t distinguish the difference between N. Korea and S. Korea. Whenever there was a N. Korea issue, I hated how I had to explain that I?m from S. Korea and the differences in between N and S Korea is so huge that it?s not even comparable. On top of that, now that this has happened, I?m just speechless.
What do you Americans think this about the killer being Korean? Beside you, what do you think how other Americans would view it?
Well?.this whole situation where I feel sorry for the dead, worrying about myself as well as other Koreans just make me sick in the stomach.
P.S: I'm worried because I know what those Middle Eastern people has been going through since 9/11. On top of that, as I've mentioned, Americans don't seem to know the difference between N. and S. Korea and that I fear Americans would think Korean= people from a nuke crazy, people dying in hunger country + psycho mass murder.
all i have to say, i am an american korean. That means my first residence is USA. I am a citizen of this great, but falling country.
To make things worse, my last name is CHO. But so far, i havent felt any racial tensions of any sort. My classmates and co workers all know who i am. I am completely different then that psycho lunatic.
We joke about it, to releave tensions amungst other korean students in the class. My teacher whom ive known for 2 yrs now even cracked a joke directed at me directly. It was to releave tensions, and the teacher and i are known to crack jokes together.
koreans, hispanics, african americans, cocasians, were all human. Despite the color of the skin, our genetic makeup are almost identical. The brain is the most complex computer in the creatation.
Even that goes BSOD once in awhile. And leads to this.
If anyone is the blame, i think its the school. They were given tons of advance warning this guy was going to be a problem. They just ignored it. I give the school credit however for trying to assimulate him. IE, privite lessons, and stuff, but i think the school went too far to allow him back in after 3 reported harrasments. As well as everyone in the class being scared to show up.
As for me, my class goes crazy when i dont show up, were on groups, and my groups heavily require my imput as well as type skills
But yes, being korean, that psycho did cause a lot of embarrasment. We like our native koreans that live in korea have lots and lots of pride. And this is a great shame to our race. But i started accepting the fact a long time ago, that were all =. And im sure all my friends think that too. So no, i havent felt any heat in a big city like LA. I still get treated like crap to people who treat other people like crap.
And i still get hugs from people who kept giving me hugs.
