Thats not true at all!

Yep, I'm calling shens on that as well.

Some things you should know:

-Get an EZ-Pass, there are tons of tolls in the tri-state area
-The roads are in the worst condition of probably any state in America
-Get a good winter coat, it gets really cold in wintertime
-Summer days generally average around 90-degrees, but the humidity is insane
-The liquor stores are state controlled (a royal PITA)
-State government sucks, see above bullet for example

I've been living here since I was born, and I STILL hate this state. The only thing it's got going for it is Philly and some historic value for the Declaration of Independence and such.

Where i live in PA (about 20 miles southwest of harrisburg), we get minor power blips on occasion... sometimes more than others, but I think most of them have to do with wind and trees than it does with the humidity.

The humidity however is pretty bad here regardless of what Babbles said. The main thing that I can't stand is that the humidity is like the opposite of windchil... so it may only be 90 or so on the thermometer, but the humidity makes you break out in sweat within the first minute of walking out the door, and that almost makes me feel hotter... especially if there is no breeze.

The winters vary from 6' plus blizzards to almost no snowfall whatsoever. I can't remember the last time we had a white christmas here... but white easters are quite common.

Yuengling is good, maybe not the best beer in teh world, but when most people only know Bud or Miller, Yuengling tastes like pure ambrosia. it is all personal preference. Having worked in a hotel resteraunt with a liquor license (that is something too... not sure about where you are, but liquor is state controlled here. That means that if you want to buy a beer, bottle of wine, 10-gallon jug of vodka... you have to get it from a state store or a resteraunt with a liquor license) that serviced people from all over the country and from overseas, if they ordered yuengling, most of them commented that they liked it quite a bit and that it stood up well. I would hope that they had a decent recipe, they are the oldest brewery in the country...

The roads truly do blow, but slowly... ever so slowly, they are getting better. In fact there is a 5 mile patch of 81 that must have been repaved in the last 10 years at least!!!

I am not sure what standard Babbles is holding the food to... but generally, if you like a certain kind of food, you can find an excellent resteraunt that serves it. As far as the cheesesteaks go... i would almost be willing to say that there are two possiblities...
1: Babbles has only ever had 'fake' cheesesteaks and therefore does not know what a real one tastes like, however, if he enjoys his 'fake' cheesesteaks, then by all means he should continue to eat them.
2: They really did suck. I have never eaten there, but I have had some tasty cheesesteaks in Philly.

I am not sure how much they love taxes as to other places... I do know that Cumberland County just upped the OPT (Occupational Privilege Tax) from $10 to $52... so that would in fact qualify in my book as a little tax-loving. On the plus side, there is no tax on food, or clothing and the sales tax otherwise is only 6%. I can't remember what income tax is.

That is my 2 cents.. and a little more.

Isn't PA a mid Atlantice state?

Tolls aren't all that bad in PA itself. EZ pass will be nice if you use the TurnPike, and if you travel to NY or NJ.

I think NJ is probably worst in terms of roads and Drivers compared to PA.

Move to SW PA or dont move in at all.
The Harris-Delphia region is nothing but an over-taxed urban wasteland filled with 2% rich to-fu fartin snobby white people and the other 98% welfare project housing.

Rule of thumb: State College (Penn State) is the line. The wester of there the better.
Erie is great, and several of the surrounding Pittsburgh mini-cities are excellent places too. Washington, Greensburg, Cannonsburg, Monroeville, etc.

2) The state government is incompetent as hell.
3) The alcohol laws are beyond screwed up.
4) They like to bitch about the humidity, but if you came from Texas then it's no big deal for you - remember up here if the temperature pushes 90º they start to whine.
5) The highway system is absolutely horrible, possibly the worst of any state (Louisiana is pretty close though). Somewhat ironic since they have the oldest highway and they love taxes, but they don't bother to build a decent highway infrastructure - go figure.
6) Here is an upside: It is rather scenic.
7) The food blows. There may be some knuckleheads who think there is good food in Philly (who knows, maybe but I didn't find it) but the food blows - especially if you are coming from California/Texas. I checked out Pat's King of Steaks (or something like that) which is one of the self proclaimed original Philly cheesesteak joints, and they sort of blew. I think I have had better cheesesteaks at freaking Quiznos.
8) Produce is expensive - here it can cost as much as $3 for one avocado and back home in Texas I can buy 3 for $1.
9) Another upside: There are tons of other interesting cities that are relative close by (and especially after living in Texas and California everything will seem to be rather "close") such as Washington DC, NYC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Toronto, etcetera.
10) The highway system really, really blows.

Hmm, where to start?

1) Not in all places, but some of the occupational taxes can get out of hand.
2) Agreed.
3) Agreed.
4) People bitch about the humidity because it really is that bad. 90º heat in PA is different than 90º heat in midwestern states. Heath in the west and midwest is dry heat, while the heat in PA is supported by humidity so thick you could cut it with a knife.
5) I'm also in agreement with this. The highway system sucks the left nut, even though there are tons of road taxes.
6) True, it is scenic, but you can only look at trees and farms for so long before you want to kill yourself
7) I heavily disagree. I've travelled all over the U.S. and I have to say that Northeastern food is second only to Southwest. Generally, you can pretty much find a good restraunt that served the kind of food you like. If not, there's always an Applebees or a local pizza joint.
8) This all depends on where you look. In the supermarkets, yes, it is expensive. Cheap produce is pretty easy to find if you know where to look. Try a local Farmer's Market or hispanic produce stand.
9) Yep, there are tons of cool cities to visit that are in close driving distance from Harrisburg.

I have lived in PA for about 10 years now...around harrisburg and Lancaster...here is my list..

1. The commnet made about yuengling being the only good beer is very false. Yuengling is the best beer if you had a choice of coors or miller...but there are tons of great microbrews around the area, expecially troeggs, Appalachian Brewery Company, Victory Brewery, and The Lancaster Brewery.

2. The roads do suck...many parts of the state seem to have the policy "If you dont know where you are, you shouldnt be there!" cause the roads, signs, on/off ramps, dont help at all and often give you no warnings what so ever.

3. While we all complain that there is nothing to do in central PA and that its very boring..when you actually think about it theres a lot you can do. Its not like kiving in a city but still. You can go to a lot of cities like philly and baltimore.

4. Alcholol laws scuk....they dont want us getting tooo drunk...and selling beer and wine together! THATS JUST CRAZY TALK...who knows what would happen! People would be having sex in the streets no doubt!

5. I dont think the winter or the summer are THAT bad...its summer..it should be hot.

It's not THAT bad. Sure the roads suck and liquor store thing sucks, but other than that its an okay state.

and the liquor isnt even that big of a thing. Its more of a inconvience then a problem..

I STILL dont understand how stopping people form buying more then 2 six packs at a time is a good idea, when they allow you to get beer by the fcase in a drive thrue.

In PA..you cant just buy 1 beer at a beer distrubitor...or a six back..you can only buy six packs at a bar. If you go to the beer distributor you need to buy a case....

Don't forget the taxes!

You have state income taxes, local income taxes, property taxes, school taxes, occupational privilage tax (WTF?!?), sales tax, and we have one of the higher gas taxes.

PA is an awesome place.. lived there 10 years, then moved, and now i'm back

and don't forget, to get to Paradise you have to go through Intercourse (it's true, both are towns and that's how you get from one to the next)

North East should be everything north of NYC and east of the Hudson River.

However, everything is relative.

Tolls everywhere? You must be referring to New Jersey.

And Jesus Christ guys, if you hate this state so much, MOVE! No one is keeping you here.

Howdy, neighbor! I live in York, about 20 mins south on I-83.

You will be about 20 mins from Hershey, PA..also known as ChocolateTown, USA. (On the other side, though, you will be about 15-20 mins from Three Mile Island Nuclear Facility, too)

So...what exactly do you want to know?

EDIT: FIXED THE 15-230 MINS FROM THREE MILE ISLAND TO BE 15-20.

I like it here. I live in the Philly suburbs. The taxes may be "screwed up" but remember that we have one of the lowest state income tax rates around. They have to recoup that somewhere else. The liquor laws are definitley fvcked up and you'd be a moron to get low profile tires around here with the state the roads are always in, but, what can you do?

AFAIK, PA has a higher mileage of state maintained roads than any other state in the union.

do you drive the Hershey Highway very often?

One of my friends lives in Elizabethtown and we were driving through Hershey one day and he says "Now we're on the Hershey Highway" and i just looked at him and he starts laughing and says "oh wait!"
