Howdy, neighbor! I live in York, about 20 mins south on I-83.
You will be about 20 mins from Hershey, PA..also known as ChocolateTown, USA. (On the other side, though, you will be about 15-230 mins from Three Mile Island Nuclear Facility, too)
So...what exactly do you want to know?
do you drive the Hershey Highway very often?
One of my friends lives in Elizabethtown and we were driving through Hershey one day and he says "Now we're on the Hershey Highway" and i just looked at him and he starts laughing and says "oh wait!"

Harrisburg area.
If your single...2nd street Harrisburg.

The OP said he lived in Texas a bit, and depending on what part of Texas it was the humidity in PA is nothing at all like some parts of Texas, i.e. Houston. Yes the humidity in PA is pretty bad but if the OP lived near the Gulf Coast, then the humidity here in PA is nothing. It is humid, but it is far worse in other places (the New Orleans area is probably the most humid place I have ever been to).Originally posted by: TheStu
The humidity however is pretty bad here regardless of what Babbles said. The main thing that I can't stand is that the humidity is like the opposite of windchil... so it may only be 90 or so on the thermometer, but the humidity makes you break out in sweat within the first minute of walking out the door, and that almost makes me feel hotter... especially if there is no breeze.
I went to two places in Little Italy that claim to have the original cheesesteak, so I doubt it was a "fake" one. Google up Geno's and Pat's then try to tell me they are "fake."Originally posted by: TheStu
I am not sure what standard Babbles is holding the food to... but generally, if you like a certain kind of food, you can find an excellent resteraunt that serves it. As far as the cheesesteaks go... i would almost be willing to say that there are two possiblities...
1: Babbles has only ever had 'fake' cheesesteaks and therefore does not know what a real one tastes like, however, if he enjoys his 'fake' cheesesteaks, then by all means he should continue to eat them.
2: They really did suck. I have never eaten there, but I have had some tasty cheesesteaks in Philly.
See my above comments. Yes the west is a dry heat so it isn't bad, but if the OP did indeed live in Texas near the Gulf Coast then the humidity in PA isn't too bad, relatively speaking.Originally posted by: Xanis
4) People bitch about the humidity because it really is that bad. 90º heat in PA is different than 90º heat in midwestern states. Heath in the west and midwest is dry heat, while the heat in PA is supported by humidity so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Which is where the OP is coming from, the Southwest! So as such you just exactly proved my point! The food up here in Yankee-land D) has nothing on Southern and Southwest cuisine!Originally posted by: Xanis
7) I heavily disagree. I've travelled all over the U.S. and I have to say that Northeastern food is second only to Southwest. Generally, you can pretty much find a good restraunt that served the kind of food you like. If not, there's always an Applebees or a local pizza joint.
I think a lot of the price issues are really due to exactly where I live; State College. The Farmer's Markets are nice, but not really much cheaper. Also it is white as hell here, there are hardly any Hispanics much less a Hispanic produce stand. I am 100% dead serious when I say the only Mexican I have met, thus far, is a post-doc immunologist - he sure as heck isn't the typical migrant worker with his fruit stand.8) This all depends on where you look. In the supermarkets, yes, it is expensive. Cheap produce is pretty easy to find if you know where to look. Try a local Farmer's Market or hispanic produce stand.
It is funny that you mention this because it is scenic, but it does all look the same. "Oh, look more trees and hills!"6) True, it is scenic, but you can only look at trees and farms for so long before you want to kill yourself

Perry County is a dry county, its kinda backwater-ish too. I think they still don't have a traffic light in the county.

there might be one (traffic light) in Loysville. Its been a long time since I've been through there, but I remember there being one. If its not there, then no, there isn't one.
Perry County isn't a dry county. In fact, searching for dry counties in PA online doesn't bring up anything. Unless i'm misunderstand what a dry county is.

No, I think you maybe right. I just remembered seeing some bars in shermansdale(sp?), I don't think they have a beer distro though.

Because we all know that the where all the government people work is the place to be.

Again, I know that is indicative of where I live and not everywhere - however with that being said I would say outside of Philly, Pittsburgh, and Harrisburg it is as white as a bowl of rice out here.

What on earth would you need an EZ Pass in Northeast Pennsylvania for? Unless you're taking the Turnpike or going into New Jersey all the time, you'll never need it.
Edit: Harrisburg is more of central PA city than Northeast PA city. When I think Northeast PA, I think Scranton and the Pocono mountains. If you're moving to the Harrisburg area, though, the EZ Pass would make more sense there.
I'm all for the Yuengling idea, too!

what can i expect from the northeast side, specifically Pennsylvania? ups? downs? must do's?

Move to SW PA or dont move in at all.
The Harris-Delphia region is nothing but an over-taxed urban wasteland filled with 2% rich to-fu fartin snobby white people and the other 98% welfare project housing.
Rule of thumb: State College (Penn State) is the line. The wester of there the better.
Erie is great, and several of the surrounding Pittsburgh mini-cities are excellent places too. Washington, Greensburg, Cannonsburg, Monroeville, etc.

Yup. My boss lived in Paradise and my landlord lived in Bird-in-Hand A lot of the names come from inns and taverns, the stagecoaches would stop there and the names stuck. Apparently they used to have a road sign post that had the names of those places on it but it kept getting stolen (no suprise, I would want it too) so they stopped putting it back up.

and don't forget, to get to Paradise you have to go through Intercourse (it's true, both are towns and that's how you get from one to the next)
don't forget bird in hand
