I have Verizon and have excellent coverage, but that is up in State College. However I fail to see why Harrisburg would be worse.Originally posted by: EyeMWing

The cities around here have NO sense of urban planning - you'll find inexplicable no-right-turn signs, one way streets, median strips that don't have any way around them to get to stuff on the other side of the road, and general "Can't get there from here" syndrome. Roads are not organized in a grid system, either.

Don't listen to most of these people. I live right across the river from Harrisburg and I work right next to Mechanicsburg, less than a mile away from the Navy base. Its a very nice place to live and for reference, I've lived in every corner of CONUS. Note that the Harrisburg metro was tied for first place in least stressful place to live:

We have a nice range of weather. The humidity isn't that bad, people. Try living in Charleston, SC. Unemployment is extremely low. Traffic is relatively light. Even Lancaster is far worse, traffic wise. If you're a city person and you don't think there is anything to do (the number one complaint of people with no interests and who can't entertain themselves), Baltimore, NYC, Philly, and DC are all within a few hours drive. As for roads, yes the surface of them is bad. But if you like driving we actually have some of the twistiest, most fun roads in the nation. You'll see that people around here are very much car people as evidenced by the number of car shows and the amount of hot rods and muscle cars you'll see driving around on Sundays. Oh, and unless you will be doing lots of traveling to the cities I mentioned above, there is NO need for EZ Pass as you will never see a toll. This isn't NJ.
When will you be moving here?

Tolls everywhere, get an EZ Pass
I lived in PA for a little while, but I live in MD now.
What on earth would you need an EZ Pass in Northeast Pennsylvania for? Unless you're taking the Turnpike or going into New Jersey all the time, you'll never need it.
Edit: Harrisburg is more of central PA city than Northeast PA city. When I think Northeast PA, I think Scranton and the Pocono mountains. If you're moving to the Harrisburg area, though, the EZ Pass would make more sense there.
I'm all for the Yuengling idea, too!
Harrisburg is just a suburb of philadelphia...
And if you want beer... Rolling Rock is brewed in good old Latrobe (for now)
<-- Lives there
I've lived in Youngwood, Uniontown, Blairsville... and by far I like greensburg the best.

I agree and just wanted to reiterate your point about EZ Pass/tolls. You can get anywhere just fine without using the Turnpike. Sure it may be marginally easier at times, but it's entirely possible to avoid it. I know you can because I do.
And yes, the major highways get congested, but that happens everywhere. Don't kid yourselves, guys. Traffic problems are not a PA-only thing. Yes, the roads COULD have been designed better. Rt422 COULD have been 3-4 lanes each way, and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) could have as well, especially right past the Conshohocken Curve, but who knew that the suburbs would explode like they did?

I'm not sure where you are driving, but you do indeed almost have to use the PA Turnpike to get to places. Is there some other optimal route to go from Harrisburg to Philly? What about Harrisburg to Pittsburgh? Unfortunately the PA Turnpike is the only somewhat decent road that goes East/West and is in the southern portion of the state. Now with all that being said I wouldn't say everybody needs to get the EZ-Pass unless they are constantly traveling on the Turnpike. However my point is that you do indeed must use the Turnpike in many instances - actually there is a stretch of it somewhere that is free because it is indeed the *only* portion of road in that area.
Also I don't think anybody was talking about congestion, and in fact the traffic congestion in PA isn't too bad at all. It is the quality of roads in PA that makes the highway system so horrible. One of these days you need to take a drive out to the rest of Pennsylvania to see how awful the highways are. I work with a bunch of central PA natives and even though they love Pennsylvania, they too moan and groan about the piss poor quality of the highway system (which also nearly every single other PA poster in this thread also mentioned).

Okay. I'm a recent transplant from MD to the Mechanicsburg/Harrisburg/York greater area. (I live in York, but I spend a fair amount of time in Harrisburg and the surrounding craphole) You should know that:
THIS PLACE SUCKS!
The supply of good looking women is RIDICULOUSLY low, the supply of intelligent women is even lower.
The nightlife is crap.
There's one half-good FM radio station - if you like pop-rock. Get XM or Sirius.
The roads will destroy your car similar to how a cheese grater destroys cheese (if you have a nice car, sell it before you come, and buy a Ford Tempo, Ford Probe, old Subaru Legacy or Acura Legend like everyone else). Lots of towns around here smell funny, whether it's because of a snack factory, or a paper mill.
If Suscom is your cable company, cry. (But Comcast just bought them, so goodness will be arriving soon)
Cingular is the way to go for cell coverage (sadly).

We have trees. LOTS of trees.
We're WAY better than New Jersey.

I used to live in Lancaster, definately liked the location 1.5hr to Philly, 1.5hr to Baltimore, 2.5hr to DC, 2.5hr to NYC, 2hr to Atlantic City.
Not a big fan of the winters or summers around there, cold in the winter but not enough snow (I like to ski) so everything is just brown and muddy while the summers are hot and humid but not sunny enough.
You can say you have been to places like Intercourse, Puseyville, Blue Ball, Virginville, and Fertility, as well as Paradise.
One place I wish I had been to while I was there was Centralia. There is an underground coal mine fire that has been going on for over 40years and most of the people have moved away.

Wow, I thought that maybe just State College was bad but it is interesting to know that many other cities are screwed up.
The asshats here in State College have zip, zero, zilch planning - these inebriated monkeys can't plan things more than six months in advance. Apparently the concept of simple parking lots confuse them here; if you happen to miss the entrance - which is usually way before or way after the place you finally want to get to - then you are usually just boned.
I am beginning to be under the impression that in order to be involved with any form of government in Pennsylvania you have to be severely lacking neural connections. This is not to say the typical person is Pennsylvania is a dolt, they are not, however if they get any sort of local or state government power then they instantly turn into a utter moron.
