The cities around here have NO sense of urban planning - you'll find inexplicable no-right-turn signs, one way streets, median strips that don't have any way around them to get to stuff on the other side of the road, and general "Can't get there from here" syndrome. Roads are not organized in a grid system, either.
My theory on how road patterns are decided upon - at a local, isolated bar, they tag a staggering drunk with a GPS locator. Wherever he happens to wander, that's where a road is paved.

Who knows, maybe a simple, efficient grid pattern is too boring for Americans, so the roads need to be jazzed up a bit to keep it interesting. Maybe do so too to cause more accidents to help satisfy the public's bloodlust.

We used to get DC suburbanites up to the pizza place in Lancaster I used to work at, that would order one Cheesesteak to eat there and a dozen, broken down by ingredient to take along home with them, cause all they could ever get around home was Steakum style cheesesteaks with cheese whiz, which BTW, are FAKE!!

Which pizza place is this? I'm in Lancaster and I could go for a good cheesesteak.

The lack of a grid is one thing. It's understandable in some of these older, developed-long-before-the-car areas. But the total lack of attempt to adapt those road networks to car-compatability while still maintaining the ability to GET TO THE DAMN PLACE YOU WANT TO GO is the issue. And then all the post-car construction. And all the CURRENT construction. It's pathetic. The best roads project in the entire state that I'm aware of is a section of I-83 that's about a mile and a half long. They're actually optimizing an interchange. The trench they've dug to run the highway through is wide enough for a 10-lane superhighway (but NOT because that's the spec on the new highway - only because they didn't want to interrupt traffic, and as such, there are FOUR sets of two lanes paved, which they use interchangeably during the construction, plus buffer areas between them which amount to approximately 2 additional lanes.

What do they plan on doing south of Beaver? Apparantly it takes them years and years to figure things out so I would be surpried if anything was to happen soon. It would be nice to have them pull their head out of their collective colon to fix the I-99 mess - mainly so I don't have to hear about it again.

Are you here for school?

It's a requirement in PA for at least part of both 99 and 22 to be under construction at all times.

I hate the drive to Pittsburgh(east to west) because 22 is always tore up for miles. Usually right around Murrysville/Monroeville. Ugh.

hey, I'm a PSUer as well in the harrisburg area...I've got some better directions into Pittsburgh (in my opinon) from State College than you guys are using that involves going thru New Kensington and onto route 28. Basically you'd be seeing about 5 traffic lights the entire time, and also avoids any semblence of traffic if you're trying to get into town during the early evening after work...PM me if you want some details.

Oh trust me, I know. That road has been under construction for YEARS though. It's just worse around Murrysville because it's 1 lane.

Well, I would reccommend Roundevous (Sp?) on King street, the bad part of town, or the Steak Out... I used to work at Papa Dino's, and they were great, but someone else bought out the one on Lincoln Hwy East, so I don't know anymore.........I haven't had one there yet, but Sluggers over the stadium should be good too.......
