Actually "think of the children, think of the children", it might not be fair depending who uses it.

Would be funny to hear what the kid says to his mum, when he asks what just came out of the printer

if you can get in with the router unprotected, i bet you the router pw is the default pw as well, look for the brand and model and google the default pw, then wreck havoc with the parental controls

already tried that. they have a linksys wrt54gs. blank username and admin password didn't work.

nah, i'm not at my house right now so i'll actually need access to the internet. if they find out that their router isn't working, they'll probably call up linksys and they'll tell them to hard reset the router.

yes, unsecured would be someone running a WI-Fi network without WEP enabled. So you're fine.

lol, (wireless) internet no0bs

Anything less than WPA is insecure.

By your definition, yes.

I use 128bit WEP, thats fine for me.

And many people swear by the "Pull Out" method of birth control, but that doesn't make it work any better.

I had upgraded the firmware the previous day. It's reasonable to expect such an upgrade to reset your router, correct? What I found UNreasonable was that it enabled wireless access by default, access which was unsecured. That pissed me off.

Most routers go back to factory defaults when you upgrade. I think its pretty common sense that unsecured wireless is always on by default. Should've been mad at yourself for not checking.

I was under the impression they'd disable it by default. It seems like a security issue, especially with the growing concern of locking down wireless access.

You can also set it so it only allows access for your wireless NIC's MAC address.

Interestingly, I have a wireless router sitting in a box here (bought it for when I went to college, so I could use my PC and laptop while there), but I've never used it to scan for networks in the area. Guess I could see what people have got running around here.

Next time, print out something more descriptive. Most people will just assume it's a virus or something - anytime [i/]anything[/i] is wrong with a PC, it's a virus. It doesn't matter what it is. If it caught fire, it was probably a virus.
Just something like "Re: Wireless. WPA, encryption, and passwords are good things. Use them. And RTFM."

I put a 128 bit wep on my wireless setup... Cause those middle schoolers that got ibooks will do anything to connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi...

Too bad my neighbor next door has one

I dont really give a rats arse about my network security anyway, since there isn't really any resources on my network, and i'm usually out away from home due to work.

I use plain ol' 128 WEP. I highly, highly doubt the ability of my neighbors to hax0r my connection.

the registered client's mac address, which means the person you're trying to crack will need to be on the computer.

:sigh;

You know what? Forget it. WEP is perfectly secure. It's unhackable. No one will ever steal your internets.
