ok, school is gonna start in about a month, so I figure I better start shopping for a laptop. Here are my only specifications:

the fastest, but yet lightest laptop I can get........for around 1600.00. When I say fast, I would really like atleast a 1.2+ghz processor. I'm still questioning about the weight. I know I want something light and small, but I don't know how light is light. This will be my first laptop, so I don't know.......is 4lbs and under light? that's pretty much it.....big screen, dvd/cdrw and all that jazz are just optional.........getting an overall light system w/ a powerful processor is all I need.......

so what do you guys reccommend?

I know I can get a powerhouse laptop w/ my price range, but the thing of concern is of weight....I want one as light as possible. that's why the 8200 is out of the question.......

there are other ultra portable stuff, but those don't come in fast processor. or if they do, the price is 2200+.

I don't know.......so what do you guys reccommend?

well light means the screen size is 'usually' small about 12'1. Sony do a model that is light; under 2kg and has a 14'1 screen but the cpu isn't great.

I have the R505 pro. 12'1 screen PIII 850m. Fast enough in apps. Just get more ram. I have 384mb. Fast enough for all my apps when working photoshop, flash, dreamweaver etc. And its light. 1.75kg or there abouts. Battery life is good also.

Do you 'really' need the extra 400Mhz?

call me crazy, but i really like my HP 900mhz AMD DVD/CDRW laptop

you don't need much speed to do what you want on the laptop.....that is unless you are a gamer.

hmm..............yea, i still can't find anything that is to my specifications. my problem is that I want to keep up w/ technology. A 850mhz is plenty fast, but isn't a 1.2ghz faster? haha. I"m afraid that by the time my 850mhz ships, a 3.5 ghz laptop would be produced........

I know i can't keep up, so I told myself I want atleast 1.2ghz.....haha

Dells have a horrible keyboard and a general cheap feel. Of all the laptops I tried out, I like the Compaq Presario 2700T the best. It has a great keyboard and an awesome screen. I would buy one again in a heartbeat except that it was replaced by the 2800T.

Dell has some nice deals on the Inspiron 2650, 4100 and powerhouse 8200 right now but I doubt any of them are light.

If you have a CostCo B&M near you and can wait until mid August you could get a Toshiba Satellita 1105 for $899 or $100 off a Compaq laptop.

There's a few nice R series and T series IBM ThinkPads on their eBay store, these are brand new sold directly from IBM.

Or you could get a Refurb Dell which has the same warranty as brand new Dell laptop.

I'd say your best bet is a Dell Inspiron 2650 starting at $1,039 after rebate with FREE ground shipping.

Good luck!

I really like the keyboard on my Inspiron 8100. It feels better than my desktops old keyboard

i never thought i would say this but... i love my compaq 2800T not only did they surprise me by making such a high quality laptop, but i also got it 3 weeks early (the web site said it would be delayed due to backorders on the SXGA+ screen, but it actually got here FASTER than it should have )and it came with a P4m 1.6 instead of the P4m 1.4 that i ordered:Q

i've been looking at the fujitsu s series for quite a while. they just came out with the s6010 which has a 1.0 ghz pentium3. the thing i like about this particular model is that it's light (4 lbs with battery) and also sports a built-in dvd/cdwriter combo. the integrated intel graphics card is kinda bad, but if you're not gonna play games, it'll be fine. although it may be kinda expensive, it's the only thing that i could find that fits my needs. what do you guys think? are the fujitsus any good?

i'm waiting until the 2.0usb equiped laptops come out.

The Compaq 2700 is equipped with USB 2.0

Mine isn't. It has firewire, but not USB 2. Maybe you're thinking of the 2800.

I did some research a while back and the lightest laptop with a 14" screen is the IBM T23/T30.
You can configure one with a sweet 1400x1050 screen... loaded they cost like 3300 though.
You get what you pay for.

If you want really light, then you need to go 12" with like a dell x200 or gateway c200.
even those cost 2000-2200.

With 1600 you are not getting anything under 5 lbs
