i couldn't take it anymore. I won't name the company, but they're a large, multinational corporation with over 200k employees and 200k contractors. Maybe more, I really don't know.

I couldn't take being treated like crap anymore. It hurts my brain when a company the size and value of this one says they can't afford to replace my 6 year old laptop. Their raises don't even keep up with inflation. But most of all, they treat you like you're some kind of con in a jail. I mean literally, they have turnstiles with jailbars in the office.

So I'm leaving and going to a much smaller company. My dry cleaning bill will be eliminated, and for many reasons, I look forward to this. I'm also looking forward to the pay and title bump. I really, REALLY just want to rage at my soon-to-be-former employer, but I don't want to burn bridges with any particular people.

Anyway. Here goes the next step of my career...

Congrats on finding something better. It's always odd to me when companies value their customers more than their employees.

Every company seems to, at some point these days, forget that the employees are what drive the company. If no one worth a crap wants to work for you, then you're left without product, and without customers.

smaller company, better pay, better title. seems to me you are not really making a sacrifice.

anyway good work on getting hired, and good luck with your new job.

That's how big companies do business. They crap on employees in order to earn more profit for share holders. Good to hear you're getting out though.

Yep, a large contractor I used to work for is doing the same thing, cutting benefits dramatically because they weren't getting new contracts which in essence keeps the stock price afloat due to profit generated by the cuts (and not revenue from new work). Very glad I got the hell out early but feel bad for some friends who are still there. I'd recommend working for a private firm that isn't public and under the gun worrying about shareholders. Many firms turn to shit when they go public in order to keep the stock price afloat.

Slight correction. They crap on employees because they know there are 10 more naive chucklehead college grads waiting outside for the "opportunity." They crap because they can. You're a cog in a machine. You can be replaced.

I'd say I'm sacrificing some level of prestige. The company looks nice on a resume, and some of the projects I've done for them are some of my best work. What it boils down to is they have no interest in retaining talent; I'm not the only one to jump ship. The only people left are the ones without any options.

If you REALLY want to know the companies, PM me. I won't post it anywhere that Google crawls to.

OP, I don't blame you one bit. I'm also going to have to make a change at some point next year and I'm thinking about throwing in the towel and just looking for somewhere small to be "the" IT department. I've worked for larger organizations my whole life and have really gotten nowhere with it.

What company?

I'm betting IBM. Why?

They have a branch office in Tampa. Hell, I probably did a security audit on your equipment once
They are a large multinational company, although most of the real work is done overseas now.
They have about 200k employees and 200k contractors. The number of contractors he's estimating is probably low, though.
Their crappy pay raises do not keep up with inflation. I know, I worked there.
He has an old IBM/Lenovo laptop that they refused to upgrade. Yeah, sounds like IBM's infamous "tech refresh" cycle... AKA the "You don't get shit until you get three levels of management to approve an 'exception' for the equipment you actually need to do your job" process.

I hear you bro /fistbump.

Though I've never stayed long enough yet to have a 6-year old laptop on my hands, usually they are at least prone to replacing them every few years for the sake of work production.... that and a lot of my work is done via intense laptop work.

Nevertheless, I had a horrible boss that would only ever call (and would call decently often) when he needed fires put out. Do you want to pick up the phone when you know it's only going to be a fire to put out? Sounds like a non-depressing environment right? After 1.5 years I canned my previous and have enjoyed it ever since. The people I work with now... much more respectful... the prospects for future advancement... much brighter.

Never be scared to move folks. There's one reason and one reason alone women (sorry, don't mean to P&N this) get paid less and live life depressed at the lower end of jobs: They are too scared to do anything about their complaints. Jesus fuck, it's not that big of risk to take a peak outside and see what is out there. People are just too lazy to put together a resume and fill out some forms. Moving around is absolutely essential more than ever in this 21st century.

i'm in a situation .. well, *similar* to yours, if on a different scale. i'm keeping this job until feb/march, then i'll change because big company doesn't care about what happens to low level workers. (for example, last month i walked into work and found my manager forgot to answer 1 email = all my access, passwords, badge got deleted.)

also, no chance in hell for development/promotion/future.

so, good move, i dont see why you should feel bad. was your stay at the "looks good on resume" company shorter than a couple years?
just say you learned all they could teach, and you moved on.

I would swear you work for the same company as me, except they are pretty good about tech refreshing.
