This is basically a rant. right now I'm on my 4th CRT monitor (in 4 years) and like the others its crapping out on me!
For the first month you get minor annoyances once a week, when the picture is fuzzy for a second. then its worse and worse until the minotor dies.

I guess I'll be going with an LCD :|

If you buy low quality CRTs, what would you expect?

I wouldnt expect much more from a low quality LCD either.

That's true. You get what you pay for.

I almost had a hernia when I lifted my 19" Trinitron to make room for my 19" LCD 50lbs versus 13lbs.. hmm.

I would start seeing which LCD units are in your budget and go from there. 17" or 18/19" are the only way to go.

Well my Sony G500 is going strong. I think I've had it for about 3 yrs now. Did I say I LOVE my 21" CRT.

For a while the choice was down to a 19" LCD or 21" CRT (SONY G520P). I deliberated for 4 months, then they dropped about $150 off the LCD while the CRT didn't even budge. I'm now a proud owner of a 19" LCD and couldn't be happier.

Actually, I didn't buy this.
I had a great '17 monitor which went puff and recieved a lousy replacement from the company >_<

Furthermore, I'll only be able to get a '15 LCD. I can pay for a '17 one, but the problem is, they cost TWICE as much as '15's.

whatever the size you should try to get a good brand LCD with a decent warranty.r
buying a no name LCD for drt cheap is a really good way for you to end up posting another thread later on saying you're tired of LCDs

Exactly. I've had my 19 inch CRT for about 7 years now and it runs as well as the first day i turned it on. Go ahead and buy a cheap LCD. I'll be waiting here for your next forum post titled "I'm sick of LCD's!!!!!" where you demand that someone finds you another monitor solution...

I'm not asking for another solution.
The previous CRT's were considered good quality ones around here.
I can't get all the fancy stuff you can, and what you consider as second option (in the US?) we consider as the best, because THERE IS NOTHING ELSE HERE.

So please take insults to another thread

Perhaps you would like to share with us the model of CRT you had and the model of LCD you plan on getting.

Previous CRT was one of the '17 Hansols. As good as it can get here, take it for what its worth. can't say exact model because I no longer have the docs.
I haven't checked avaiable LCD's yet.

Two Sony G220's over 3 years, and still going strong. One Sony G410 over two years, still going strong. At work over 20 ViewSonic E70's going on 4 years, still going strong.

May I ask like dexvx, what CRT brand are you using?

This is basically a rant. right now I'm on my 4th CRT monitor (in 4 years) and like the others its crapping out on me!

Over the same amount of years,I had a CTX 19" go soft image wise got a replacement that was fine, then I upgraded to a LG 915 FT Flatron, the first had geometry problems so they sent me a new replacement model which was out of focus , so I had to repack it and wait for the replacement model for the replacement ,which I`m using to this day (now over 2 years old).

It`s showing some slight signs of going, colour in top left hand corner is slightly out on blue(showing some whiteness, purity controls can`t fix it) and very small part of the screen in near bottom centre is slightly soft on focus(not severe since it`s very slight but if you look carefully you can notice it).

Anyway I`m looking at a Samsung 19" LCD for my next upgrade,it just becoming too much hassle to carry big 19" CRTs up and the stairs ,let alone the hassle of repacking them for RMA etc when things go wrong and worring about geometry problems as well, ironically only Samsung CRT monitors(14" & 15") I have had in the past have been perfect.

I'm on a four or five year old 17 or 18 incher, and it has had absolutely zero problems. Its not CRT's, its whoever makes the ones that you buy.

I've worked with computers for two decades now - and in quite a lot of computer labs. In all that time and with probably near 1000 CRTs, I've seen only two CRTs fail when it wasn't user error (one died with a power problem in the CRT and the other had a bad cable that would flicker one color on/off if the cable was moved). I've seen a couple more fail due to what I consider user error (they were enclosed in a teacher's workstation box with no method for the heat to escape and they overheated). How the heck did you get 4 to fail?

Oh and every LCD I've used has failed. I used them a bunch when they first came out and 1 year was about the lifespan they had. I bet they have improved quality since then, but I'm not going back any time soon.

Love my Eizo F931.

What's Hansol by the way?
The fact that www.hansol.com leads to some kind of Asian porn site doesn't inspire alot of confidence.

Heh.
Just the name of the company. hey, XP has drivers for em, so they're real
Also, my computer is next to an open window and there's wind all the time, so ventilation is not a problem. I haven't touched the monitors really, they just degraded more and more. it wasn't like it suddenly went off because I hit it with a baseball bat.
