Warning...Harley Joke content follows....

Harley Davidson = The most efficient way to turn gasoline into noise without the side effect of horsepower.

Statistics show that 95% of Harleys built are still on the road today.
.
.
.
.
The other 5% made it home.

I'd put the number for 70's and 80's Harleys somewhere around 99%. The current ones are helping bring that number down.

True.

HD has been great for a long time now, but I personally cannot get over the fact their engine tech is so out of date. Yeah it works, and it is "classic", but every other bike maker does so much more with modern designs.

In addition, buying a Harley is buying a lifestyle. I ride because I love riding, and I ride what I consider to be the best tool for the job at hand. Not the best tool to fit the image I want to project.

I plan on getting a Harley some day. They keep getting better and better every year, so I'll wait a few more years and pick up a used one. I definitely want the 96" engine and 6 speed.

Pretty soon they'll be up to the standards of 1970s era Hondas.

From a reliability point of view, Harley is as good as any, and better than most. But if your looking for horse power and handling, then no, you don't want anything to do with a Harley. Harley's are for touring and cursing, they were never designed for high performance, and the people that buy them aren't looking for a high performance machine. I redlined mine once in first gear, that was enough to scare the shit out of me, I'll never do it again.

:laugh:MAO!!! I'm sure that was unintentional...

No, Harley engines aren't what you'd call high tech. Mine is a 1250cc engine, and produces 125hp stock, far more power than I'll ever need, but not much compared to what the inline 4's put out.

The lifestyle thing is a choice, not a requirement. I never wanted any part of the lifestyle, I just like the bikes.

I can ride this bike with no handlebars...no handlebars.. meh. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway,

1948 Twin fork Springer Panhead. First year of the Panhead, and last year of the twin fork springers.
This is a model F, low compression fire/police bike. There were not many models with that came in this particular configuraion. It's one of a few and one of even fewer running.
It's geared for torque since it's supposed to haul a sidecar + rider. There's not a lick of aluminum on this puppy and no fiberglass. It's a heavy bitch for sure.
This one was a fire bike owned by the fire chief in Fort Benning (Columbus, GA).
My father purchased it from him for $2500 dollars and has owned for over 36 yrs.
It was painted OD green (it belonged to the army foremost). He repainted it to the color you see now, but has since been repainted to the original factory finish of black bars, frame and fire engine red tank, fenders and sidecar. It has the original siren, and glass fire lenses.
It's near 100% original. It even has the original fan cooled 2 brush generator (for those who may know how hard those are to find.)
He can't ride any longer due to declining health and has been recently given to me. I don't have much ride time on it (days). It takes some getting used to.

3-speed forward and reverse with stick shift on the tank. Left handle bar is spark advance/retard and right is throttle (like normal). Rear brake on right foot and roller clutch on left foot. Front/park brake is left hand.

Sorry for the image quality. When this pic was taken, we had forgotten the camera and had to use a phone camera instead.

That thing is awesome! You should send some pics to American Iron, I'd bet they would publish them.

I'm not sure what you're getting at.

edit: JJ, I'm loving that panhead. Are you still located in Georgia? I've seen that bike or one very similar to it at meets/rallies in Iowa.

This bike hasn't been in GA for long time and I doubt it's ever been to Iowa.

**EDIT**

My father has never mentioned it being in Iowa at least. I don't think it has tho.

Huh? Wtf?

ok some dudes are probably looking to impress other dudes.

Most Harley riders though aren't looking for ultimate cornering and all that crap. They are looking to cruise and pickup chicks and then cruise with chicks.

I don't see anything wrong with that!

I was responding mostly to those way above talking about HD's breaking down and not being hi-tech or great track bikes.

My neighbor has three of them. Chicks seem to be attracted to them more than purses.

Is that a problem for you? Would you prefer that they were trying to impress you?

Honestly, I don't think I'd care to sample the pussy that most Harley riders are trying, or hoping, to impress.

Edit-I don't have a problem with Harley's or guys who are into them. Honestly, I've never ridden one. I was considering one a few years ago but went down a different road and I'm happy with the bikes I've owned since then and I'm glad I didn't buy a Harley because I don't think I'd be happy with it.

Two of my neighbors own Harley's and I genuinely like both of them...the owners, not the bikes. I'd never buy a cruiser though, they just don't interest me. If I wanted a touring bike I'd buy a touring bike...probably a BMW.

Jules...seriously, I am sure Lance Armstrong is tired getting your 'weekly update' letters from the 'field'

I think you lacked reading comprehension above....I don't think many Harley dudes are looking to impress anyone except some blonde's ass into the mattress.

Funny, I thought most of them were looking for the badass image.

Seriously, I think you should go rent the movie 'Wild Hogs' tonight and lighten up a bit.

As a Harley owner, I have to say that that movie typified the modern Harley demographic pretty damn well. I fit outside it by quite a bit -- I always feel out of place at rallies.

edit: Regarding Harley pussy, I wouldn't go near about 90% of it. I'm a 21 year old college student in good physical shape.

You meet up at the Blue Oyster or something...

S. Florida is a bit different, but Dr. Feelgood's downtown has a pretty high quality level of chicks.

I didn't know you were actively dating though anyway.
