Hope is the expectation of good, whereas fear is the expectation of evil. Choose to hope.

Working in front of a computer all day caused carpal tunnel and it has progressively getting worse in the last several months. The tip of my fingers hurt so bad and sometimes I can't feel anything with it. I should seek for employment in a field that I'm 100% likely to sit in front of a computer 8+ hours a day.

And yet, here you are, using a PC?, to complain about it....get a track ball or touch pad stylist or something!

We probably see 2-3 cases of CTS in our manufacturing facilities a year...not due to current ergonomic concerns but previous manufacturing processes. I don't want to make Carpal Tunnel out to be "routine", but many of our associates have surgery and are back to work. Not sit at your desk work, but lifting, welding, etc.

If CTS is debilitating for you. Then spend your savings to improve that situation. Or explore health care coverage. You are accepting a treatable condition as your roadblock to success...I simply don't understand.

The feelings of depression and hopelessness are entirely valid. The important thing to realize though is that they're not related, at least solely, to your current unemployment. So, now you have two things to work on. Admittedly, job seeking is made more difficult by your mental state which is why you should seek help right away.

You said you're unemployed, but also are working in front of a computer?

If you are playing video games, stop. I got bad carpal more than a decade ago from years of PC gaming. It's now perfect because I stopped playing FPS.

I won't tell you to shut up and deal with it, though; people saying that are being ignorant at best. We all suffer ailments in different ways. I have back pain from time to time. It doesn't bother me much and I deal with it. I wouldn't tell that to somebody with a buggered spine and slipped discs and not all carpal is the same.

I have severe bone spurs on both ankles under my Achilles' tendons. Both spurs are cutting through the tendons as I walk and at the end of the day I can barely stand, let alone walk. Lucky for me, the govt/insurance has decided I don't need surgery to remove the spurs until my tendons snap. My doctor says if they snap, the road to recovery will be 2-4 times longer and much more painful. You know what I do every day? I go the hell to work and hope they don't snap.

I have some lingering pains from hardcore gaming too (FPS earlier and then a whoooole lot of WoW). Very mild carpal and a bit of a bad back. Had to stop pc gaming altogether unfortunately...very unfortunately...because its what I enjoy doing the most in life. I'm in the process of redefining myself as a console gamer now though. Need to try real hard to be more active now...and basically, I can't sit at a computer except when I'm at work. But life goes on.

Hope you find your way soon OP.

Because I'm bleeding cash. I pay a monthly rent & is currently finishing up my degree. While the money I have saved up over the years can sustain me for a long time, I currently have a career/job crisis (On top of that, the money I have saved up is earmarked for a house purchase...but now i'm using it to live monthly & for school). My accounting degree doesn't work well with the carpal tunnel. I can't just go back to school to start fresh...even then I don't even know what to study anymore.

but you said you don't have TIME or MONEY. where is your time being spent?

Get the surgery in Costa Rica. I'm serious. There are some excellent hospitals there, and it would be a LOT cheaper.

So as I'm entering my thirties & unemployed...I don't have any real world employable skills and things are looking bleak. I'm at a point where I don't know what to do anymore.

I'm going to get my associate degree in accounting in May but I can't work in the field because I've developed severe carpal tunnel syndrome over the years. If I sit for any extended period of time, my neck & shoulder hurt and my fingers tingle like heck. It's extremely painful.

I can't afford to go back to school because I don't have the time or money...

Even if, I don't even know what to go to school for anymore.
So you are unemployed, but don't have any time? Say what?

Get a standing desk. I use one. Instead of sitting in front of a computer, I stand. Burns more calories and is much better on your body. Couple hundred bucks for it (I got the varidesk pro) OR if you need cheap you can use a couple of milk crates. Seriously...you can't sit and it never occurred to you to stand?

30 is not old by any measure. It is only middle age if you plan on dying at 60. Quit throwing a pity party and get busy living.

Your college degree doesn't matter as much as you think, you need to stand up for yourself and work hard.

I'm up at 4AM and working until 2AM sometimes the next day. I am employed for intangible reasons. Prove yourself, stop letting yourself down, and giving up.

But having a solid degree (pref 4 year) means way more than not having one, in general.

Yes, there are exceptions, but putting in the time shows a desire to learn and to stick something out, some discipline.

Also, employers do use "no degree / 2 yr degree" as a criteria for skipping promotion / pay increases.

So there may be a reason why this type of person (OP) doesn't have a college degree yet and why they are also unemployed. Attitude adjustment, life is not easy.

I'm glad I was dumb during my college years, as if I knew what I know now, I would be hard pressed to spend 4 years in school at an older age.

In the workforce, after a few years, nobody sees that you graduated from Harvard. It helps when switching jobs.

In my current career, I have every type of background (medical, lawyers, chemical engineers, etc.) programming - it's a mindset. You can be successful two ways, by being intelligent, or working hard. If you are both, you will be rich, but not many have that combination.

Anyone can have an attitude adjustment to work hard.

The reason you get a raise or promotion is not because you graduated from Harvard, it's because the company doesn't want to lose you and you provide value. Your going market rate. Everyone is replaceable, even stating that...

I agree, you need a college degree to make your employment life easier, and to show dedication - not necessarily you'll work in your degree field.

Good luck!

I live in a resort town. We work for 4 months and collect unemployment for 8.

It's a great life if you like this type of thing.

My neighbor was unemployed for 2 years while his wife worked, and he said it was "great", the only problem was he couldn't "work OT" and get that extra cash...

Annoying individual.

Prolonged periods in one position is not good for you, or making the same movements (such as mouse movements). I think you need to excercise. To make other movements with your body then just behind the screen. I am sure it will give relieve.

I work an accounting job at a computer all day. When I switched to using a trackball instead of traditional mouse my wrist pain went away. Give that a try. As for you other problems, IDK where to start. Sounds like you need to get a job and start dedicating yourself to it asap to get over the constant worrying and self overanalysis.

You got it OP. Its just not going to be a pretty transformation to witness You're on the right path so thats all that matters. Just go forward now one step at a time. I'm fairly certain you KNOW what to do if you'd actually take action and follow your gut, so stop over-thinking it and start doing.

I don't really need much. Have enough money saved up to buy a condo/townhouse outright so I will be fine even if I make $15+ an hour. At that rate, I'll net around $1800 monthly after FUTA/FICA/SUTA/misc taxes. Housing would only be around 25-30% of my income.

I just want to find a company with growth potential. But then again, I don't have any networking connection and I can't work in a field that I've studied for.
You're thirty years old, have enough saved to buy a condo/townhouse outright, and things look hopeless right now? You are starting sooo far above the average American it's not even funny.

Take some of your savings and pay a homeless person to slap the shit out of you. It'll do you both a world of good.

I work with mouse and keyboard all day and play FPS's with trackball and joystick. I still get pain if I'm working more than 20 hours at a stretch, but otherwise the different motions seems to help prevent work's carpal tunnel pain from building day to day.
