I've wasted a fair amount of time on the video updates dude keeps on their channel 9 website. Some of this stuff from Vista is a breath of fresh air.

The networking stack is getting redone. The guys in the video said that the way that Vista will recover from a packet loss will make your DSL connection faster just by having a Vista machine plugged into the line. Also they're rockin ipv6.

Volume control is finally getting fixed. Much more user friendly and simple. New sound recorder too, and it records in WMA for as long as you want.

The new XPS printer tech is quite neat as well. Hard to explain without actually finding the comparison in the printouts from the video. But the current printing standard is quickly realized to suck when you see these comparisons. They also finally have compression when you send a picture to the printer so that you don't have these long delays to print the large files that we use today.

There's the visual styles. The quick searches. Fixes for a lot of hardware support. Regulation of registry usage so that every vendor has to follow the same protocols for where the information is stored.

They are also planning on having all of the distributions on one disc (DVD) and the user just keying in the copy they bought. Tee Hee!

Networking stack should have been fixed years ago.

Volume control works fine.

Printer enhancement? Do they magically increase hardware DPI... I think not.

Visual styles, quick searches, hardware support... already available in XP. "Regulation of registry" - the registry needs protection from virii, not software vendors.

All distros on one disc? Gives you the warm feeling when you realize Joe down the street paid $100 for the same CD you paid $500 for. Same crap, different price.

Conclusion: XP Service pack 3.

I'm glad linux is picking up in popularity.

m00t is right though, this is nothing - especially if they release DX10 for XP, then ill never upgrade my gaming PC past XP

its just more fancy visuals that your average PC user will think of as an upgrade

Solution? Save yourself the money and buy WindowBlinds

Massive overhead? Well, those that have posted so far are comparing Vista to a superior XP. Don't expect Microsoft to need a super high end system if you are just going with a minimal usage setup; if you watch the videos you'll see that they've eliminated as much of the interdependency between different processes. Vista will allow for parts of the system to be shut down while the others continue to run. When a game is launched, all of that massive overhead can be made to shutdown for that time.

Graphical interface PLUS networking stack PLUS XPS Printing (watch video or shut it) PLUS Volume Control (you never knew it was bad until they came along and fixed it) PLUS a little extra for everyone with a dual core machine.

and you are all trolls!

I have to agree with everyone else... Vista is nothing more than a Windows XP Service Pack 3... It doesn't include enough to be considered a significant upgrade from XP.

How's that work? What are they doing differently that will make things go faster?

Also they're rockin ipv6.

Everyone else has been doing that for YEARS now. OpenBSD's had ipv6 since at least 2000 thanks in part to KAME...

One of the things I'm looking forward to in Vista (as someone that doesn't like Windows because it makes less sense to me) is that they are dropping system privs for processes and whatnot. They're finally promoting the use of non-admin accounts and lessening the damage malicious code can do.

and you are all trolls!

That's kind of a funny thing coming from someone with the nick pee on penguins (spaces added by me).

No doubt you need that breath of fresh hour after peeing on the penguin....

Do you go to the poles each time you want to pee?

QFT, you know some windows users remind me of some console gamers, they don't realize that there are things out there (gaming rigs) that were already way ahead of their systems even before the console was released!
