I'm stumped

I just got a new motherboard and HDD.

I've installed all the drivers for the motherboard including chipset and onboard sound but it still doesn't work.

In Device manager, it says everything is "working properly"

I have, regarding sound things-

Legacy Audio Drivers
Audio Codecs
and Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (sound drivers)

Could my old HDD give me problems with old audio drivers conflicting or something? I've been trying to fix this for a day and a half. I've tried a lot of drivers :\

2.8GHz LGA775 P4 w/ P4MBMS mobo
9800 pro
512mb pc3200
maxtor 160gb hdd

Try putting in a sound card, and install those drivers
You could bypass the whole problem

Turtle Beach Catalina is my favorite
They're rather cheap too, but good

That is what I was going to say, just invest in a PCI sound card.

Just a thought, did you check your BIOS and made sure Onboard sound is on?

Yeah, i already enabled the onboard sound in the bios

and the ppl telling me to buy a new PCI card. Yeah i'll get one, but i'm not gonna just "give up" and go out and dish out more money. I'm at least gonna spend some time trying to figure this out -_-

Have you tried looking at the actual chip on your motherboard and googling for drivers (I'm assuming you're downloading drivers based upon the motherboard and not the actual chip). The name of the chip (like ALC650 or whatever) will usually be printed on the chip.

It's possible that when you installed your OS is auto installed the wrong driver. What I've done before is look in the device tab to find the name of the driver, boot to safe mode, delete it, and manually install another driver.

Also, make sure your speakers are working and you're plugged into the right port. I spent hours screwing around fixing a speaker that was plugged into the line-in port....

To see if its an OS/driver issue you could try using a Linux boot CD like Knoppix or something.

If it works with the boot CD you know you have an OS/driver issue.

P.S. I had an issue with my onboard audio on my Intel board even though I had the driver installed. After I installed the Intel Audio Studio, it gave me options to change settings that I couldnt do with the driver alone. After I made those changes, I had sound again. Just a thought...

Have you looked in Control Panel,Sound and Audio Devices, and checked to see that the Audio Devices selected match your on board ones?
