I love my EVO, but it's battery gulping is a bitch, recently started using a huge battery and aftermarket back to double the battery life, it kicks ass now, but it ain't thin.

The EVO has a massive following and more custom roms than you'll ever have time to use. I've stayed with Fresh and been very happy, it has 4G, tethering and is very stable.

Were I to make the switch today, I'd buy an EVO, if I could wait a bit, I'd see what they're announcing next month as far as new phones....

Got my Evo in December. Played with both and liked the touchscreen keyboard enough to not miss a physical one. Larger screen, better ROMs, and better manufacturer support were my other reasons.

Considering how bad battery life is on current smartphones I hate to see what it's gonna be like when they move to dual core CPU's.

i think that is something that is being addressed. newer phones like droid x and iphone have better battery life that older smartphones dont they?

I know you want to switch out your phone but if you can wait till summer it will def be worth it. I want to get rid of my tour(love blackberry but too many glitches lately) soo bad but I know the iphone 5 is coming and I am failry sure sprint will get it or someone will have a hack for it to be ported to Sprint.

I am not a programmer but I am sure with the popularity fo the Iphone it will make its way on to Sprint just like it did for tmobile. I never was much of a fanboy of apple but after getting my mom a touch for christmas and watching a person who knows nothing about computers or the internet, start using it everyday, changed my opinion. My gf got a ipad for a job bonus and I must say it is amazing. I went to the sprint store to check out the galaxy tab and that is a pos compared to the ipad.

If you can't wait for the iphone, I understand. The Evo has a huge screen, looks great and has strong community behind it. I played with it for a while when my blackberry was in the sprint repair center and it the best phone in the store by far. I would not bother with a motorola/samsung product. Android is too fragmented for a community to support each individual phone. Evo appears to be the flagship sprint product.
Good luck with the phone buying op.

not to mention the shift is just less powerful than both phones mentioned here, and lacks a FF camera. not an option for me..

The shift uses a second generation snapdragon processor and includes a better gpu than the original evo. Straight processor performance wise it is comparable to both, even at its lower clock speed (800Mhz) (google smartbench shift evo ...). The gpu on the epic blows the other two away if you plan on gaming a bit, there is no comparison.

The shift is the same processor as used in the G2 which overclocks like crazy (I think I saw stable up to 1.4Ghz). This will put the shift ahead of the rest should that extra speed be needed. Either way, it's no slouch.

I personally am leaning towards the shift since I prefer the smaller size and keyboard. I'd get the epic, but I want reliable gps and not have to mess with things too much; battery life on the shift is supposed to be pretty good too on the stock rom. Samsung is supposed to fix gps in froyo, but who knows.

ah, if its the same as the g2 then it's definitely no slouch. i assumed it was something lower, i guess.

well, i'm still leaning towards the epic due to slightly better specs. plus, that screen is gorgeous.

idk..

Think to yourself how many of these threads in here you see something like the following phrase: "SAMSUNG %#$@*&%$ NEVER AGAIN"

Yeah, let the newbs buy Samsung phones, just say no, and maybe they'll start treating their phone consumers better. As it stands, I wouldn't buy a Samsung phone or recommend them for a long time after they shaped up.

Once again another person who thinks a Verizon phone can be hacked.for Sprint.
Just not going to happen.

I just got the EVO and couldn't be happier with it. At first I was leaning towards the samsung, but the slide out keyboard just felt.... weak. Yes, the screen is a bit brighter on the samsung, but it's also thicker... good luck.

It can be done, but MEID swapping is needed to get it on sprints network. MEID swapping could be a real pain in the rear on its own (let alone it being *illegal*). Standard phone service is easy (the swap will take care of that), getting functional data is another story.

Either way, moving a verizon phone to sprint is a real pain and probably not something the average person would want to do given other viable phone alternatives. Plus, you will never be supported and practically no one will be able to help you if things go haywire.

I get that we're on a tech enthusiast site where it's people's hobby to buy the latest and greatest all the time, but it's a pretty friggin big stretch to call a phone that's been out for 7 months "old".

It's cus things move fast in the mobile world. 7 months is an eternity for a smartphone now.

You need to root that bitch, install Cyanogen mod 6.1 or 6.1.2 and then put the savage rom on it. I, too, was using a bigass battery and loved it. Then I read up and found the battery savings with this savage rom. I'm back to the smaller, sexier battery and my phone can still go all day with normal usage, most of the day if I'm playing on it all the time.

I tried Cyangoen, it froze up constantly on me

I know all that.
Thats why I said its not going to happen.
People have a misconception that it could be done as easy as ATT phones being on t-mobile when the concept is totally different.

Even so, there's nothing new that has come out in the past 7 months to make the Evo old. It's got 4G, it's got froyo with gingerbread in the works, it still has the largest screen out there. Granted, there are newer things that are going to outclass it that are coming soon, but if someone wants an Android phone NOW, there isn't anything wrong with the Evo, and certainly not age.

4G, large screen, and froyo gave it lasting popwer but honestly it still studders when doing things. It's definitely in need of a faster processor. Using a G2, Galaxy S, or even the new Evo Shift shows that it's in need of some more processing/gpu power. Everything else with it though is great. All they need to do to it is give it some more power and tweak the battery and it'll be a perfect phone.
