I'm taking a stand!

In CA, it's illegal to smoke most places, including restaurants and bars. For whatever reason, the city of Santa Cruz doesn't see fit to enforce that little law. So I've decided to stop patronizing bars where they allow smoking. All my clothes reek of smoke (so now all my dirty clothes will until I do laundry), and I just sniffed my forearms (I was wearing a T-shirt), and I can smell it there too. Goddamn. I suppose I could find some agency to complain to, but if they're not enforcing it now, they probably don't care. Ugh. I'm feeling pretty good about looking forward to saying, "No, I won't go to that bar, sorry." They won't ever notice my missing business, but at least I won't have to convince myself I don't mind anymore.

I worked at a sports bar/grill that saw a huge boost in business after going non-smoking. It was more of a restaurant than a bar, though, and probably a bit more upscale than your average sports bar as well. Considering the demographic they were going for, the place probably should have been non-smoking from the get-go.

I guess I must be one of those rare non-smokers who actually don't mind smoking (I kind of like the smell of the smoke, as crazy as it sounds). Of course, I'd never start smoking (or marry a chain smoker), HUGE waste of money, and if you do it enough the entire house starts to reek, turn yellow, etc. I really don't agree with smoking bans, I think it's something that should be left up to the individual businesses. As BlancoNino pointed out, both smoking and non-smoking bars can be successful.

I don't go to bars where smoking is allowed, but it's ridiculous that they made it illegal. If a business owner wants to allow smoking in his place, it should be his choice.

That makes entirely too much sense, thus the reason we must legislate it!

Where I live they have banned smoking in public places except bars. Because of this my wife and I go out to eat a lot more often. That said, I think the ban is bullshit. We should not have the right to tell people what legal acts they can allow on their property. I don't smoke, but I would sign a petition to lift the ban and give some kind of tax break to businesses that ban smoking or some other positive method of enforcement.

Go have your Stella and Shirly Temple chaser at a Red Lobster and leave the real drinking to grown ups.

I don't care for smoke, but a bar is a place where the least rules the better.

Only took time for emos that want to feel cool to ruin it.

I am not sure if you meant beat me to it, or beat meat to it.

I still can't believe people are legislating smoking. Wow.

And you want to complain and some "agency" make the bar you want to go to smoke free? GET OUT OF THE BAR IF YOU DON'T lIKE IT.

I'm glad you decided to pick a non-smoking bar if that's your choice, but don't try and take away business owners rights. =p

This is why CA can eat a D.

It shouldn't be outlawed period. It should be up to the owner. That way, everyone gets their piece of the pie.

That makes entirely too much sense, thus the reason we must legislate it!

Tell that to the employees.

And OP - you're only taking half a stand. You should report them.

Work at a non-smoking establishment! See how easy that is?

I know, I know, my thought process is just pure insanity.

The employees choose to work in a smoking environment.

I also don't buy that they are going to get horrible death causing problems from a little bit of second hand smoke here and there in a bar.

What blows my mind is how the Californians that support these kinds of laws completely fail to realize that the only reason it seems ok is because it favors themselves rather than favoring the freedom of the community. Thinking that way feels all hunky dory until they start passing laws which make your life just that much more inconvenient and unhappy. In the end, the laws are not the true problem. The belief that those kinds of laws which micro manage freedoms of that nature should even be considered up for discussion is the real issue.

a little? ahahahahaha. when smoking was allowed in bars it was like a smokestack in there. smoking and drinking goes hand in hand for close to all smokers. i do not miss the day i was hung over before hang over time because i was breathing in toxic chemicals all night in a bar.

So please explain to me why this is not an issue in huge cities like Miami where you got plenty of smokey bars/clubs and you also have a ton of places just like them where smoking is not permitted? What is so bad about having a little something for everyone?

why not have a tractor trailer exhaust bar? back the trucks up and let the carbon monoxide flow in. a little something for everyone especially those that want to off themselves quicker.
