All of our computers come with 2gb of ram now. Only having 512mb of ram is complete rubbish. In my background I have this running:
Remote Deployment Agent
Software Inventory Agent
Security Expressions Agent
Norton AV Agent
Encryption Agent
Cisco Security Agent
Secure Pass

That is just all of our normal security software we run on computers here. That does not include everything else that comes with Windows and other various Apps.

Outlook is the biggest piece of crap. It takes like 5 seconds for me to do anything in it. If I reply, make a new one, hell, even expand it from the corner tray, it will take 5 seconds to resopnd. If I press the up key and move my current message to the one above it, it takes like 5 seconds to open it.

I do not understand how Outlook can be such a piece of crap.

i take it you've never used Lotus Notes? After having to use notes for the past 3 yrs, I'll gladly switch to outlook. Here's a sample scenario

New mail will come. I will click on said new mail. Hour glass will pop up. I will walk to the water cooler and fill up my 24oz glass with water. I will walk back to my desk. Hourglass will still be there. Will take another couple seconds before content of new mail shows up in preview pane.

QFT I hate lotus

I'm running with 96MB of PC100 on this machine. I use office and quickbooks 2007.

I don't see what your problem is

I've done all that with 300+ page word files (with lots of graphs) and massive Excel files, and add in Powerpoint, on 128 MB no problem at all. You just need to learn to turn off useless other things (like desktop backgrounds, memory hogging disk caches, preloading software such as Adobe Reader, etc).

I NEED to have (at a minimum) MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Project and MS Visio open at any time. I can close out the Word/Excel documents when I'm done with them but it isn't helping much.

Yeah, Outlook sucks. Oh, and it doesn't help that the IT guys have that stupid Rtvscan running on my PC, also. Sometimes that process will jump up to 70% CPU usage when I'm working and I can't stop it. So annoying. :|
Here we've got Integrity, TunnelGuard and OfficeScan all running in conjunction! Of course, the policies are so restrictive I can't even close the programs unless I terminate the process (at which point my ethernet connection ceases to function.)

My workplace has invested very little in upgrading/buying computers for the majority of the workforce.

Up until late last yr I had a sony vaio laptop with a P3 650 and 128mb ram.

After enough complaining I was "upgraded" to a dell with dual P3 800 and 256mb.

Maybe if I complain some more I'll get a 1 gig P3 with 384mb.

If I were your boss I'd just fire you and hire someone who can work without whining about how fast their computer is.

How is that stand going for ya? Getting any work done? Or just surfing ATOT with that blazing fast machine of yours. They are probably monitoring your ight now and checking you out to see what al the fuss is about, when they realize your just net surfin' they'll think you got everything you need for the work being done.

Posting from a HP nx9420 laptop. C2D 2.0ghz, 2gb ram, 100gb hard drive. I'm alright(for the moment). Just...to brag.

Now, the deal with my company is that everyone is on an upgrade path. 3 years at the moment, so everyone waits their turn and eventually they get their new hot rod pc's. Since most users are CAD users though, they get demanding machines as it is. However, the recent software for ACAD users has made a bit of a jump for performance demands, that may screw us over on the upgrade paths.

For our office users, we set them up with a simple P4 or P4 D processor, 512-1gb ram, and they are good to go. 80gb hard drive nothing more needed. Otherwise, when we hear "office" pc, they are not on the high end scale or even midrange for what we order. Now, we do have some users that do photoshop, etc. And yeah, it can be a pain but only when users complain do they get upgraded.

Otherwise, most realize they get what they get, and if they want to keep their job, they'll deal with it. They should be so lucky to have a P3 - P4 with 512mb ram. If they don't like it, they can take their business elsewhere and demand specs for their PC.

I just asked our IT department for another 1 gig stick (have one already). I'm trying to do testing on a few assembly files here and it takes me 20 flipping min to open the damn things with only 1 gig of memory. These are huge assemblies though so even with two gigs of memory it will still take awhile to open.

Edit: Noooo! They didn't have any in stock :|. Now I have to try to get this done on only one gig of memory. The rest of my day is going to suck........

Posting from a dual 2.7 ghz G5 with 2.5G of RAM and I'm still crying for an upgrade =(

IllustratorCS2+ PSCS2+ acrobat pro+ distiller+ Entourage+ Firefox+ FontReserve+ TextWrangler+ iTunes+ a couple big print processes + a java time-nagger + NetOctopus + ... well, I guess that's it, but I can barely fit it all on my two monitors... :frown:

And it does get super-laggy if I have anything even halfway-large open in photoshop. Which is most days.

The more ram you have the more XP likes to use for "buffer" which increases peformance.

As for Windows 2000, it's been a long time but my machine at work also uses 512 and it seems to be fine. That's for of course just for Windows Office.

Our IT department was suppose to "upgrade" us to XP years ago but for some reason taking their sweet time. They likely did a few tests in some departments and found out many problems. I believe one of them was the 512MB standard they have for Windows 2000. The money they will have to spend will be gigantic....but it's not like they don't have it.

512MB? I'd be freaking happy with 512MB. On my computer at work I only have 384MB of ram on Windows XP Pro. It gets so slow sometimes it drives me nuts!
