Im Ticked Off, And there's a Good Reason Why!

A couple days ago I put together a lower-end AMD XP 1700+, with 256DDR, a Geforce 2TI 64mB, and just some components from other computers.... and it Overheating was the least of my worries. About 30 mins ago my computer shut down, after some looking at the temps I found out that my CPU was running at 52C No Load and over 60C Load!!!

This kinda pissed me off... When I bought my computer, I remembered to get a decent cooler, not some cheap $5 Coolermaster. Well my CPU Heatsink was a DR Thermal TITI-V77L, with a 70x70x15 Fan which runs in excess of 6500RPMs and moves quite a bit of air, I also had put some Paste on too. So I replaced the V77L with a Stock AMD Cooler, with a smaller fan, and no paste. To my surprise It kept the system at 46C No Load and 50C Load..... This is very puzzling to me... I spend over $30 on the Dr Thermal yet a CHEAP Stock cooler does better than it?????! Could anyone enlighten me on this ? I re-seated the V77L with no luck... I've read some great reviews of this thing, maybe I got a bad one?

Thanks,

Orangey

Did you read any reviews on this heatsink (I haven't...)? Maybe you seated it wrong? Maybe you confused the age old notion of "High price = Quality product"....

I'd say try the dr thermal again...and report back. That really shouldn't happen...unless it was seated crooked or the fan was broken....

Chiggachu:

I tryed it once more (to my dismay) and I still yielded the same results. One thinking of me, is that this heatsink uses a different "clamping" mechanism. Instead of using like 50 pounds of pressure to install the 2 lugs on other heatsinks, such as the Stock one. You set the "minor" clip on the lug, then push gently down the "major" clip onto the other lug, It takes like 2 pounds of pressure. Then you push a bar down on the side of the heatsink, which supposedly "secures" the heatsink. Maybe its not creating enough pressure or something?

Heres the Installation instructions for it, probably illustrates it more than my stupid description: http://www.thermal-integration.com/service.htm#1

Thanks for the Response....

Just because it comes with the retail CPU doesn't mean it's low quality. In fact, I've heard many times that the heatsink that comes with the retail AthlonXP is more than sufficient for non-overclockers. I've never heard anyone here mention DR Thermal, so it probably isn't exactly a high quality heatsink.

Coolermaster isn't that bad. If you're not overclocking, I'd trust it over some no name crap.

You said you just used "paste" - did you try some Arctic Silver? That should help lower the temps a good bit. Where did you get the Dr. Thermal cooler? Might help to see it to understand why it's not all that.

You sure you didn't use too much paste? I used too much AS2 and it made my P3 stay about 10 degrees high, and would heat up rapidly when crunching work units.

I've got a DR Thermal TI-V77L that I hacked. My temps tonight were 46 under load (30c case temp high for 6 hours of dungeon siege) and running 37c with a 25c case temp with no load right now.

CPU is a Duron 1Ghz not overclocked. I used the thermal pad that comes with the HSF.

Do you consider that fan quiet? If yours has the same Y.S. tech as mine it's rated like 40 some odd Db or something, runs around 6000 RPM and lets out an annoying growl.

WTF is in there was my wife's exclamation on first hearing it.

Could not stand the stock fan (even after doing the 7v mod) so I ripped it off and replaced it with a much quieter panaflo L1A. Temps rose a couple of degrees, but at least my wife hangs out with me now.

Some reviewers call this a quiet HSF, other call it loud. Some say TI must have QC problems to have such uneven reviews (but still recommend the HSF).

When AMD CPU prices drop next week I may get something faster than the duron. If I do I'll be showing the DR Thermal TI-V77L the door.....

I have the Dr Thermal V77 with AS3 on my 1.4 Athlon and my temps NEVER go above 45c, thats with a 33c mobo temp (Asus A7V). It has a 5000 rpm fan. I can't imagine why your temps are so high...

When you took off the Dr. Thermal did you check the CPU imprint? I've heard that the CPU isn't entirely covered by the heatsink in some places and it's exposed..

There's a good photo here showing the off-center problem. If the copper core is recessed from the aluminum at all, that would definitely cause an inefficient interface between the CPU and the heatsink. If that is what's happening, you should lay out some fine-grit sandpaper on glass and wet-sand the bottom of the heatsink until it's flush. Or stick with what's working for you (the stock 'sink). Good luck!

I have the same Dr. Thermal with my XP 1600+, not overclocked. I installed it with ASII, and my idle cpu temps are 42C, 47C after heavy gaming. I've checked though, and the cpu is mostdefinitely "off center" from the copper hs core, so I would guess any offset between the copper and aluminum would make a big difference, and my explain why your performance is bad, while others have been OK.

Was there somekind of thermal interface material [like a pad or some gray stuff] at the bottom of the HS? Did you remove it before installing it and using the paste on the cpu? If the TIM was still on, plus the paste, that would explain the poor performance of the HSF.
I replaced the V77L with a Stock AMD Cooler, with a smaller fan, and no paste
Unless you scraped off the TIM, not using the paste would explain the better performance. Use either the TIM or,preferably, the paste/compound individually but not both at the same time.

lapp that mutha and put on some fresh ASII. Lapping brought my temps down to 30c idle and 38 load (8 degrees lower, Sk6 on xp 1600+)

Retail heatsink is more than enough if you're not overclocking...why would they ship with a heatsink that can't handle stock speeds?
