Current system:
Athlon XP 1800+
1gb ram
ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro 128mb

Two choices:
1) Pentium D 805, a motherboard that supports AGP 8x and DDR1 (my budget isn't enough for more) - will use my old video card

2) Geforce 6800 GT or 7800 GS..

Hi There!

3rd option:

Asrock SATA2-Dual Motherboard & an Athlon 64 3000+. Keep your Vid card and everything else, then go Dual-core or PCI-E in the future! Also will support AM2 when the time is right!

If it had to be one of those then I'd say the 805 but I don't off the top of my head know any boards that support Dual Coer and DDR1 for Intel [Although there proberbly are].

yeah I was gonna write that I was thinking of other options..

However, the pentium D 805 is the cheapest dual core you can find, and it can OC up to 3.6ghz on air with no special fan.

Another advantage is that I can probably get a 6800 GT or 7600 GT/GS for the 805 as well.

That's true, although the power consumption of the 8xx series is well high as well, you'll need a decent PSU and deeper pockets for your electric bills, and that's before you overclock as well [if you're bothered - some are some aint].

I'd still get the ASRock combo but if you have your heart set on it get the 805 for the dual core.

edit: seriously though, you are in almost the same situation as me!! Except that you have twice the RAM and a much better Gfx card....I'd say don't upgrade and wait. Although if you really want, you could get the AsRock Dual SataII that was recommended earlier that would support AM2 with an add-on card. I was considering the AsRock too, but I decided to wait for Conroe and AM2...

Yes, by all means, wait and save up a little more money. Core 2 Duo (Conroe) will be here soon, and should blow the socks of anything AMD has on the market.

Unfortunately I'm sort of in the same boat. I'm still using my AXP system and all I've upgraded was the vid card last year to a 6800nu. I can get by for awhile, but I'm waiting for Conroe to come out before I jump into a new vid card/mobo.

I seriously would not get a new vid card for AGP because the price/performance is not there.. I was going to get a 6800GS, x800xt/x850xt, or a 7800GS but they just cost way too much for AGP. You can get a much faster card in PCI-Ex for less, or go with something even faster for a bit more.

I would probably wait til you can buy a new board with PCI-Ex and a faster cpu. You really wouldn't want to just put a new vid card on your board because your cpu would not push it hard enough so you wouldn't get the most out of the vid card.
