Ah.. you will always be able to use 10.5.5. The future updates are up in the air, until they're released.. but you'll always be able to use 10.5.5. So you won't have to go back to Vista, unless you absolutely want to.

yeah, but after a while, I'd hate not to get critical security updates... it just makes me a bit uneasy, heh. And I'd really hate to miss out on snow leopard.

You should go the EFI-X route... my hackintosh is still on 10.5.4

Ditto. Every word of it is exactly how I feel.

Plus the fact that you can't use it when you go in to Windows to play a game or two because you can't press both multiple buttons at once. Therefore... in an example like BF2... if you're in a tank you can't shoot both the cannon and machine gun at the same time. Yeah it's a minor issue, but when other products can do this without problem then I'll take them over the one that doesn't. I mean, how upset would some of you be if say... you couldn't have Mail and Safari/Firefox open at the same time? It sounds stupid to get upset over, and you can deal with it... but it should work correctly.

In regards to the OP: I'll say what I always say in these threads. If you're waiting for the new model or updated specs before you buy, then with Apple you will always be waiting because there are always rumors of an update and always a list of things people would like but that won't happen.

Yea.. I agree.. I'm back to my trust Logitech MX518. Great great mouse. I love it.

that doesn't really change my concerns.. EFI-X route still is vulnerable to Apple releasing an update to break it.

Doesn't EFI-X write their own drivers / updates whenever one is released? Kaido knows more about this particular subject than I do.

well, yeah, and the hackintosh community does the same. My point is if Apple manages to do something to break their ability (either by code, or legal means) to continue work, then it sorta sucks, heh.

A user-serviceable hard drive would be nice too.

Think there's little chance we'd see that kind of design change on that kind of scale any time soon though.

Well, the older plastic iMacs had user serviceable harddrives, at least in the sense that you could find instructions on Apple's website.

heh, they did? i thought the directions were from one of those sites that took apart everything. either way, it's not exactly as easy as a normal system... or the new macbooks. I really hope that is indicative of what will come later... something actually more user serviceable from apple

It is a bit bizarre being able to upgrade hard drive on their most basic $999 13" notebook, but not able to on their top-spec $2199 24" consumer desktop.

i suspect the only way to do it would be to break the sides and have it slide out of there. but that seems to be a no-no for apple. they won't even put a far more functional USB port on the side. The bottom is already mostly for speakers and intake vents. My guess would be to make a memory/HDD cradle somehow. Or, they'll move to laptop HDDs, which would be a huge blow.

It's the question people have asked ever since computers were first released. If I upgrade now, will they just come out with something better? When it comes to iMacs, I think it's always worth seeing if they do. The new iMacs are always cutting edge, each completely different than the last. In terms of power, I'm sure you won't see a significant improvement, but I'm sure the price will come down and there will be at least one or two revolutionary features. At the very least, it should cause the old iMacs to go on sale.

What do you guys think are the chances that Apple will update the rest of their Cinema Display line? I've been looking for a 24" DVI monitor for quite some time, and I was hoping that they would offer one at Macworld...I got all excited when they released the 24" Mini-DP one, only to find out that it's almost impossible to convert that to DVI.

How could it be almost impossible to convert DVI to MiniDP if the MacBooks can get an adapter that goes from MiniDP to DVI?

If you have a MacBook with MiniDP you can get an adapter to use DVI monitors. It doesn't work the other way around; the new 24" display requires a computer with DP.

he's asking why it can't be the other way around. I suspect to be able to use the new 24" on older systems. I suspect it's possible, but of course it wouldn't maintain any sort of HDCP stuff. But if you're converting in that direction, it wouldn't matter.
