I have been asked to find out what image/photo management system solutions are currently available. We have a custom application, but it is struggling under the current load. We currently have 25k-30k photos that we currently manage, but I expect it to grow to 50k in a short period of time. I know there are document management products like EMC's Documentum, but I think we need something that is designed primarily for images/photos.

Suggestions? Thanks.

No, I have not. I'll probably install ResourceSpace and perhaps some other
specialized / LINUX oriented ones in a few days.
I hear LightRoom may be more or less ok; stay away from Bridge like the plague, though.

Would Picasa not work here because there's too much? Doesn't iPhoto have support for like 100,000 pictures?

QuixoticOne, please post your feelings about the software if you do install it. I'd like to get some personal recommendations.

AFAIK, Picasa is for your local computer and sharing photos on the web. It is not an enterprise application.

iPhoto appears to be Mac-based. Ixnay on Mac-only products.

EMC Documentum's Digital Asset Manager is designed specifically for this.

Will do. We've got around 35K images so far, and once I set up the server it'll be easy to test it with multiples of that, so I'll report on what I find.

QuixoticOne, did you ever get around to testing any software? I'd like to know what you found if you did.

If you still haven't decided the folks over at the DAM Book Forums should be able to help. DAM as in Digital Asset Management for Photographers. I think the author of the DAM book prefers iPhoto. I have lightroom and love it, but it is not meant for pure cataloging purposes. A lot of it's functionality is image correction/enhancing with a somewhat robust DAM app included. There are some apps that work better on multiple machines across networks. Lightroom isn't one of them.

Unfortunately I have not yet deployed it due to other priorities. I hope to do so over the next few days, however.

I like ACDSee. I can place keywords and categorize without cataloging them. My experience with cataloging is that the program is looking for that particular hard drive if you have to change it, got to start all over again. That has been my experience. Maybe I'm doing things wrong.
