It could be old stock. Or it could be a case like with Fuji CD-R's, where the ads always say "16x" and it's been 40x or 48x for about two years now and says so clearly on the package. The OD Imations were clearly marked 4x.

Dual-format owners: pick up one of each (+R and -R) and apply the $10/50 printable that came in snail mail recently. If all rebates go thru, you got 50 good-quality blanks for free! Even if the second rebates get denied, it's still a good deal at $30 for 50 blanks.

I talked to store manager about this, he made a phone call. The answer is, no, you don't get both rebate on one item; yes, you can buy twice this week, and get two rebate. It is OfficeMax's rebate, and no manufaturer's involved, so original UPC is needed.

Be careful with this deal people, I just returned from OM with a 25 spindle of the Imation +R. The ones I got are NOT the Ricoh 4x ones, instead they are CMC Magnetics 2.4x speed. Just made this deal a little less hot, but if you can get the 4x Ricohs then it's definitely worth your time.

I wish these companies would start marking the speed of their DVD media on the package... It seriously sucks when you don't get what you were expecting.

I just burned one of the CMC's and it seems OK.

I have had heck recently -- the Aldi foods -r one's were Optorite -- half would not play on my portable player.

I also have some Tigerdirect -r one's that were CMC -- they also were half playable at best.

I am stating to understand about cheap media.....

I have ordered some G04's from Meritline.com.

I have another pack of the Imation +r's (from Staples). I am thinking I need to return those and not open. Ricoh sounded good. I am a little scared of CMC. DVD media is too expensive to continue to throw away.....

That's not at all a stupid question. What is stupid is the manufacturers not being able to agree on a common standard. One of the review websites, I think cdrlabs, did a quite extensive test of this, and what they found was that the "-" DVDR's were more compatible. However, the differences were rather small: 86% compatibility across a wide range of players for "+" and 91% for "-".

In general, any recent player should play both.

I picked two box today (it is spindle in a paper box, outside upc code is different than inside), no way to tell who makes it by looking at box. One box is grey base: CMC (x2), the other is black base: Ritek (x2.4). Both burned ok.

No speed is marked on box or spindle. I should pay more attention before I bought. It begins to make sense now, they don't want us to know what we actually get. Smart way to get rid of old stocks.
