Best Buy is selling all of its Imation DVD and CD media at 40% off this week - this particular 50-disc spindle was priced at $99.99, and has a $35 instant savings on it along with a $5 main-in rebate, bringing down the final price to $59.99:

Best Buy - Imation 50-Pack DVD+R Disc Spindle = $99.99 - $35 IR - $5 MIR = $59.99

I'm not sure about the quality of these discs as I've never used them - another minus point seems to be their 2x recording speed, which means that it could take up to 30 minutes to burn a single disc.

Here are a couple of other good Imation DVD media deals at Besy Buy:

Imation 25-Pack 2x DVD+RW Disc Spindle = $84.99 - $29 IR - $5 MIR = $50.99
Imation 25-Pack 2x DVD-RW Spindle = $84.99 - $29 IR - $5 MIR = $50.99

I've used em before, never a coaster and the ones i bought had an unobtrusive design on the top, which is nice if you use labels without alot of print on them. i wouldnt say they are my faves, but i bought this pack today. thanks

This would possibly be hot if it were 4X but it's not. The 100 Pk TDK 4X +R for $130 with no rebates was far hotter IMO. Anyone ID'd these to see who the manfacturer is?

Wrong, but hey, nice try.

I haven't ID'd these yet, but the Imation DVD+RW's are RICOH, so I bet the +R's are also RICOH.

I've read that as well HERE. ..Meaning DVD-R is more compatible, so where's your source?

dvd-r is not more compatible. it's because dvd-R is earlier than the other formats in coming out that some DVD players can read them. they still need to state dvd-r compability to guarantee it. a different laser setting is required to read dvd-r compared to dvds.

OK...so what's the info regarding DVD+R. There are some drives listed that can read one and not the other, so one has to be more compatible than the other. Please enlighten us as to how just as many or more dvd drives can read DVD+R as can read DVD-R. If you will goto THIS site and search for DVD-R players and DVD+R players, you will find that a higher percentage of players support DVD-R than did DVD+R from the players listed (1000+ players listed). This isn't a small sampling and there is a small but noticable edge for DVD-R in compatibility. Perhaps this website is incorrect in its findings. That's why I would like you or someone else to show data to the contrary.

BFD. If you have a DVD +R writer what difference does it make.

Thanks for the deal.

The largest difference is in what media you buy, and not which is more compatible. The percentages are fairly close as to compatibility with a slight edge going to DVD-R. I have a DVD-R recorder, but I purchased that format because of the price of the media. Now that DVD+R media is coming down so much in price, the largest advantage DVD-R had is gone. Don't let my previous posts scare you into thinking DVD+R is bad. I think DVD+R has some good advantages over DVD-R. I just wanted to show some statistics on which is currently most compatible since that was being questioned.

I would suggest to anyone looking at purchasing one of hte formats to check the site I linked to earlier so that you can see the compatibility issues, if any, you will run into.

You cant just go around telling people that DVD-R is more compatible and they should all buy that instead. It is true from what I hear DVD-R is more compatible, but all the new drives usually play both now. Anyway right now all the big companies sell DVD+R drives, and it seems that they are selling far more. DVD+R will probably become the standard eventually.

For all those out there not buying the whole dvd +r is better I have some reading for you:

http://www.dvdtoday.com/recordable_DVD_test.htm

Here are some conclusions:

- DVD format, media brand, and player interact to determine compatibility.

- DVD-RW and DVD+RW are very similar.

- The most compatible format is 3.95GB DVD-R for Authoring.

- Name-brand media are more com-patible than off-brand media.

- Of the DVD players we tested, 90 percent show some incompatibility.

- DVD players manufactured since 2001 are more compatible.

Also:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvd

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 90% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 85% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 73% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

These numbers are current so it looks like -r is 5% more compatible than +r not a great difference. +r has some nice features and I admit and the media seems to be more consistent. I think -r is still a great medium but I think +r is coming on strong and will over take -r soon if they don't come up with something real quick. If I were to bet I would say +r will win only because -r camp is dragging their feet lately. With each passing day the +r gain on DVD compatiblity since the old DVD players are getting getting replaced with new ones that play both -r and +r. I dont think -r will die anytime soon but if the +r media is cheaper there is really very little reason to stay with -r especially if compatibily is the same, which in a year or less will probably be true.

ok not to be the annoying wuss boy that complains about people bieng in the wrong forum, but this is a hot deal to me because i have a DVD+R burner, buying DVD-Rs would do me no good at all huh? so if you want to discuss the merrits of one format over another, perhaps take it to the proper forum?

Looks like they have now - they are showing the product status as being Currently Unavailable, which means that if you place an order now, the order status page will show them as being Backordered. Once this happens, they will take a certain number of orders before declaring the item Sold Out - luckily, the discs still seem to be available at most of their stores - so, you could either buy them there, or order them online and pick them up in-store.

here is a list of compatible DVD players for + media:
http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/compatibilitylist_dvdvideo.html

The testing is limited...VERY LIMITED!

Using its quality assurance labs, Intellikey analyzed the performance of the competing formats on 100 domestic and international brand DVD players, including models dating as far back as 1997.

The site I linked to includes almost 1500 players for DVD-R and over 1000 for DVD+R. That's 10 times the sampling. BUT, I say again...the compatibility issue isn't the largest factor unless you know which player you will be using. If so, then check the list to make sure your media type/brand will work on your player.

Yes there is. It is the same deal as the DVD+R's. The sale applies to all Imation blank media. For that $64.99 price, you could choose from a box of DVD+R's or DVD-R's.
