You're right. We have alligators for pets, not crocks.

Keep this in mind:

My parents came here illegally many, many years ago....(they were actually escaping a war... )

My mom works for HEADSTART, and has put LITERALLY THOUSANDs of children(white, black, asian, Indian, hispanic, etc.) through school in one of the BEST public school systems in the NATION

My Dad however, has had it very rough, and is really not getting anywhere(they divorced when I was three)

I am first-generation here, and am the first to go to such a nice university

I agree that immigrants should learn English...it IS a good thing...in fact I know three

This writer, and I can't believe basically no one caught this, was probably just trying to get attention for bringing up such a contraversial issue.

THIS issue will never be resolved with short disscussion SIMPLY because ther are americans here disscussing it. Our opinions will always differ, and THAT is what makes our country unique amoung others.

Kinda interesting how the guy basically insults everyone in the article though. Just because the "immigrants" he has met are "assholes" and congregate into there own sections does not mean everyone does it. Basically everyone in my family has done ther best to be successful and live on their own...in their neighborhoods, they are as "american" as anyone else,

As for the religion-stuff, that was not proper because of its inaccuracy as others have pointed out, and was basically a LAME way of getting readers.

Damn writers ..at least the crappy ones anyways

EDIT: I SUCk at typing

Yeah, and what exactly are you gonna do about it? If a person is an american citizen he has the same rights as you, no matter if he/she was born here, or came here.

What do you and guys like the writer want to do? Ban personal freedoms of all minorities?

Yes, america is changing, so is Canada and so is every other dammned country on earth and there's nothing we can do about it. Globalization is more than just free trade. In 100 years, our countries will look nothing like they do now. The only way to stop is to become an isolationist, xenophobic state that has Hitler-like policies.

IMO the writer simply doesn't like minorities and is expressing his dislike by writing an editorial piece so full of bullsh!t that it makes fertilizer smell like flowers .

Yep, they have every right to speak English, take pride in this country, abide by this country's laws, and not force their views on others. But that's not what's happening, and if you'd get past that 'I'm a minorty, everyone is out to get me' attitude you seem to have you might see that.

For everyone interested in this topic: I suggest you look up Dinesh D'Souza. He's an immigrant from India and served in the Reagan administration. His latest book is entitled "What's So Great About America." He argues that Western/American culture truly is superior in every way to others, and if that's racist of him, well, he's not White, so go figure that out yourself. He lists him experience as an example of this superiority -- he immigrated willingly, and has achieved much that he would not have been able to if he had stayed in India. Furthermore, he sees European colonialization as a good thing (although it was bad at the time for those who were oppressed), because it infused Western civilization into other lands, and that has led to what we have today, which he sees as wonderful (but I personally think is pretty fux0red, because societies develop in ways to match the needs of the people, and societial forms developed by one people don't necessarily work well for others with different needs -- I think that a notion similar to the Prime Directive in Star Trek would have served exploring 17th-century Europeans very well. However, that's history and we can't change it.).

Anyway, it's a controversial topic, but I think that this guy is in a unique position to talk about it.

I must say I agree with the paragraph about speaking English. Keeping your culture with you is a noble thing and I support that but if you are going to live here, you should at least make an effort to learn to speak the language that most everyone else uses in everyday life.

Today at work a customer came in and knew little to no English. I know enough basic spanish to tell him that unfortunately, all of our spanish speaking associates were not in the store today. He then proceeded to give me a dirty look and mumble some curses at me (I caught beloved patriot) and then he stormed off. WTF?!? Since when did anyone have the right to complain and be rude about something like that? I would never walk into a place of business in another country and expect them to have an english speaker just waiting for someone like me to come in. I would at least have the courtesy to speak the native tongue well enough to take care of myself.

It is in line with my stance on schooling. I think it is irresponsible for schools to teach ONLY in spanish. Bilingual classes are fine and I wholeheartedly support them but for hundreds of children to not be actively taught to speak english is ridiculous..

Rant done

Either that or he is tired of people who are not here LEGALLY abusing the system. If you are a legal immigrant then I have zero, and I mean zero problems with you. If you are an illegal then why should you be able to stay? I don't care if you are from England, Russia, France, Morrocco, Israel, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Sudan, Germany, China, Norway, Greece, Austria, Japan, Iceland, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, Scotland, Ireland, Sri Lanka or wherever. If you are here illegally you don't belong here. What is wrong with me paying taxes to make sure our borders are secure? Other country's do it. Why shouldn't we?

I'd really slap the hell out of whoever wrote that balooney, especially about the part on language.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

Isn't it true that English that we use in the US is composed of other languages? If you trace the root of the words in English you will find out that it is developed from another language. So for that matter isn't the arthur speaking other languages to some extend?

I do have to agree on the part of learning the language though, anyone should be prepared to learn the new language so he is able to communicate and express his feelings, though one doesn't have to be part of the society by speaking the language.

Millenium: Well, that depends on how you define language.

By one of the definition I found in the dictionary, language means

"Communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols"

What I meant was that the actual"speaking" does not have to be an important prerequisite of being in a society, there are many ways to express ones feeling. Even if you don't know the language there are still ways to express one's opinion by some universal means.

Maybe I am been too philosophical here... but I don't know, it's just a personal opinion anyways

I respect your opinion. I feel that people should be able to communicate with me verbally in English(In the U.S.).

When I was in Spain I had to learn rudimentary Spanish. I actually felt bad not knowing much spanish. My friend is teaching me spanish right now. I am already pretty good at German. I just think you should follow the language of the land you are in. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Nothing is more frustrating to me that trying to have a conversation with someone and neither one of us understand what the other is saying.

When I am in a foreign country I don't expect them to cater to my needs. I have to be willing to accept their language.

Mountain out of molehills!

This "Immigration" issue has been argued forever in the US. The Irish, Italians, Chinese, and every other ethnic group caused a ruckus amongst US citizens at the time. First generation immigrants may or may not learn English, but their children will. In a couple generations descendants of todays immigrants will be bithing about immigrants.

Save your breath for a real issue.

If you shut down the borders to America I would probably be in Ireland and you all would be missing out on the pleasure of my company ! Wouldn't that be a shame ?

I don't know who is advocating closing the borders but I am not. We need control. We can't keep letting in people who take advantage of the system or who are criminals. We have enough as it is. Give us your poor and your hungry. They can become rich and never be hungry again, but only if they work for it.

We need to improve the Mexican economy, then people won't have as great an incentive to come here. Not that immigration is inherently a bad thing. Immigrants do jobs that American citizens would never do themselves (i.e. janitorial work.)

But why do we as american's need to improve the Mexican econ? shouldn't that be their responsibility....also I am tired of seeing the Spanish speaking ATM machines, if you're gonna live here then personally I think you should speak the language...just as if I went anywhere else I would expect to have to learn theirs and not have them cater to me.

The English language actually came from German. I have no problem with people speaking their native tongues but what I find irritating is that a lot of Spanish speakers have no interest at all in learning English. They intentionally act ignorant as if they don't understand English even though they do. A lot of them even INSIST on being talked to in Spanish, which I find rude and disrespectful. I mean, you go to your neighbors house, you respect their rules and not impose your own. I have Filipino and Chinese friends who are not the best sounding English speakers. They even sound funny speaking English. But at least, they are trying their darndest to learn it. I bet they could even spell English better than the average American.
