I imagine being a criminal convicted and sentence for a crime in an actual court of law would accomplish that task.

such an "imagination" that you have here has only ever relied on the public's perceived distaste for voting such felons and criminals into office. ...when has that ever actually been true, though?

especially with what we have seen the last 4 years. Obviously, the GOP could further decide not to let such a criminal run under their party....but lol, again.

exactly. The trial will bring a lot of it out there, and force Republicans on record to admit their unending defense of a criminal--assuming SDNY does its job proper. I really do hope that the trial calls a lot of witnesses, too, especially the GOP congressmen traitors that are as equally culpable in the insurrection as Trump was. I want them testifying under oath and on record.

Yes, and I think he also needs to be federally prosecuted as well, for election law violations, and for obstructing justice during the Mueller investigation. Anything that any prosecutor on a state or federal level thinks they can prove in court. He didn't try to self-pardon, so that will be no hurdle. If there is a case to be made, DoJ needs to make it.

Wasn't that the claim about his first impeachment? Didn't matter it seems.

Just give it up and realize that the enemy is inside the country fence already. Vigilance.

Next 2 years will be the real test, 2022 elections. You go Jamie.

Was our politics (Republican party) always this crazy? What do the articulate that they even stand for?

Yes, but most white americans used to be like Jackasslass and thought they were both equally horrible (which honestly was more true in the past) so ignored the blatant racism, bigotry, literal sexual assaults, high crimes, insane conspiracy shit, lies, and hate.

Unfortunately there's been enough impossible to ignore situations that many have started to see it, but even more unfortunately we still have an oversupply of Jackasslasses that believe, despite white nationalists literally being the largest and most dangerous terrorist threat to America, that Democrats are any second now going to wage genocidal war on the proud white American racists.

Yep. None of the witnesses in the house impeachment a year ago made any difference. Half the country just cherry picked the parts of testimony that they liked and ignored the rest. It's going to be the same this time around.
It's even simpler this time around, nobody is expecting a 3 week trial again. We have Trump (and his minions) giving speeches riling up the crowd into a frenzy. He literally instructs them to march to the Capitol to "fight." So either you understand exactly what he did (intentional consequences or not), or you consider it a "perfect speech." I suppose a third camp will blame Capitol Police for shit planning.

At the trial they should show explicit videos of the incident. They should also bring the families of the dead police officers in to testify. They need to hear the recordings.
I don't know if this strategy will do anything, the GOP will just scapegoat Capitol Police. It doesn't take a stretch of imagination to know the angry mob would have inflicted bodily harm on Pence, Pelosi and other prominent lawmakers (they were literally chanting it loudly). But by a stroke of luck (and the skill of Ofc. Eugene Goodman) it didn't happen, so Trump skates with plausible deniability.

They need to get people to say WHY there was so little preparation and a late response. Maybe this guy too:

I think it's the rule of unintended consequences. Last summer, Trump brought in the guard in attempt to create incidents & escalate against protesters. That's just the way it was. Seeing that, Esper & Milley disarmed the guard & told them to stand down, put them in observer rather than participant positions. The additional restraints placed on the guard were an attempt to prevent another attempt by Trump so he flipped the script. There are different ways to try to seize power.

Do not kind yourself, this was the plan. He did that during the BLM protests to make them act like that later. He knew he had somewhat castrated them, so he had a window where he could not respond to requests to use the Guard and that the leaders did not have them in a position to react quickly. He knew when he lost the election, he could continue to roll on The Big Lie he was saying for the 6 months prior to the election. Stone’s fingerprints are all over this. It’s the Brooks Brothers Riot 2.0, a.k.a. the Dickies-Carhart Insurrection.

Well, looks like McConnell, Rand Paul, etc are still finding ways to out-manuveur the Dems. Not that there ever was really any shot at a Senate conviction. Two weeks ago Trump seemed too toxic for the GOP...now they're all but rolling out the red carpet for him in 2024. Was probably inevitable. He's never going away.

Jumping off the trump train before it's too late.

Trump’s top impeachment lawyer has left his team - POLITICO
Butch Bowers, a South Carolina lawyer who was reportedly set to play a major role in the Senate’s trial of the former president, is now no longer with the team. Deborah Barbier, another South Carolina lawyer, won’t be either. The person described it as a “mutual decision” and said new names will be announced shortly.

I wonder if Crazy Rudy will get another shot at the job.

Biggest bunch of p****s ever seen.
Seems like at-risk Republicans could easily let someone else hold Trump accountable by just not showing up for the final vote.
Check my math, but if all 50 Republican Senators show up, there needs to be 16.33 (17) Republican defectors that vote to impeach. If 17 Republican senators decide to stay home from the impeachment vote, then 5 Republican Senators need to vote to impeach to reach 2/3 of all senators present. If 25 Republican Senators don't come for the final vote, then Democrats alone (with the VP vote) could impeach.

Seems like a good way to act morally while not risking the wrath of the extreme right.
'I was going to come in to vote, but I had cough and a slight fever.'
Kind of a Blue Flu thing.
Total p***y move.

"Well, Trump did try to overthrow Democracy, but he failed, so let's not talk about that any more because he's out of office. All better now!"

Meanwhile, McCarthy sucks up to Trump like it never happened-

Wishful thinking my friend: even this assumes that these R senators are anything but the lowest level of scum, alas, they have repeatedly shown otherwise. The last good one (McCain) passed a while ago.
