It's even simpler this time around, nobody is expecting a 3 week trial again. We have Trump (and his minions) giving speeches riling up the crowd into a frenzy. I don't know if this strategy will do anything, the GOP will just scapegoat Capitol Police. It doesn't take a stretch of imagination to know the angry mob would have inflicted bodily harm on Pence, Pelosi and other prominent lawmakers (they were literally chanting it loudly). I think it's the rule of unintended consequences. Last summer, Trump brought in the guard in attempt to create incidents & escalate against protesters. That's just the way it was. Seeing that, Esper & Milley disarmed the guard & told them to stand down, put them in observer rather than participant positions. The additional restraints placed on the guard were an attempt to prevent another attempt by Trump so he flipped the script. There are different ways to try to seize power.

Check my math, but if all 50 Republican Senators show up, there needs to be 16.33 (17) Republican defectors that vote to impeach. If 17 Republican senators decide to stay home from the impeachment vote, then 5 Republican Senators need to vote to impeach to reach 2/3 of all senators present. If 25 Republican Senators don't come for the final vote, then Democrats alone (with the VP vote) could impeach.
