The evidence for Trump's guilt presented in the trial has been completely overwhelming. Any Republican who does not vote Guilty is putting party above what's legally and morally right.

I thought they were the party of "law and order?"

The only thing holding back the collapse of the GOP is the lack of a viable alternative. IMO classic GOP (small government, hold taxes down, etc.) is still very vibrant on a local and state level throughout much of the country.

Nationally though the are almost universally horrendous. The current group of GOP senators would make great subjects for a Profiles In Cowardice book.

That's exactly it. They aren't afraid of Trump, they are afraid of his supporters. They are afraid of what he can still do to their futures and careers via his brainwashed minions. The only courageous Republicans are the ones that have or are going to retire, and no longer fear the public retribution. The cult is so pervasive it's like the coronavirus itself, incredibly difficult to overcome without the support of everyone. And the chances of every Republican in office getting together and saying "this needs to end, we need to take back our party" are about zero. I suspect the death threats they've seen from others and would expect from their own constituents, and actually seeing what these whackadoodles will attempt to do keeps them cowed. If anything the insurrection shows them what they'd be up against, the MAGA cancel culture.

I dont get it ... his supporters was JUST dumped at the alter.... by Trump.

I'll walk with you
- Did not walk with them
Pardon us please
- Pardons none of them
Please have a plan
- Crickets.

I mean how much abuse can a Trump supporter take? Is actually quite fascinating.

I buy that as the reason, but I wonder about people like Rob Portman, who is not going to run in 2022. Or, for that matter, Mitch McConnell, who was just re-elected at age 78 and is probably on his last term. Why are neither going to vote for conviction?

For those interested, here is the federal incitement statute:

(a)
Whoever, with intent that another person engage in conduct constituting a felony that has as an element the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against property or against the person of another in violation of the laws of the United States, and under circumstances strongly corroborative of that intent, solicits, commands, induces, or otherwise endeavors to persuade such other person to engage in such conduct, shall be imprisoned not more than one-half the maximum term of imprisonment or (notwithstanding section 3571) fined not more than one-half of the maximum fine prescribed for the punishment of the crime solicited, or both; or if the crime solicited is punishable by life imprisonment or death, shall be imprisoned for not more than twenty years.

If this applies to Trump, and by its language, it might, then Trump is potentially facing jail time equal to half the jail time of whichever rioter gets the most jail time. Or, perhaps he could get half the total jail time of all the rioters. Not sure on that one.

Lol ... In 8 years Mitt Romney went from being the Republican nominee for President to being marked and hunted down for death by Republican voters.

Apparently Hawley was not even at his seat - he was in the gallery, not paying any attention to the proceedings.

He should not be allowed to vote. He is abrogating his duty and his job, and should simply be tossed. But of course he has (R ) after his name, so that’s perfectly acceptable to be a US Senator and act like a 15 year old entitled child.

Unfortunately this would be a federal crime and I believe Michael Cohen when he predicted Trump The Traitor (TTT) issued himself a "pocket"/secret pardon and will pull it out if federal charges are brought against him. If that happens I hope the DOJ takes it all the way to SCOTUS to rule on a presidential self pardon.

Think about it. If TTT were able to get away with what he did can you imagine if every future president issued a self pardon at the end of their term to protect them from anything illegal they did past and future. It's mind boggling and sickening.

People keep saying this but they are delusional, there is no scared Republican politician. Trump supporters and republicans are one in the same, there is no daylight between them. The sooner we understand this the sooner we can act appropriately.

Yeah, speaking as an Alabamian, Shelby is a deeply flawed politician. His replacement is likely to be horrendous. Mo Brooks seems all too likely. But I repeat myself.

Everyone say this will split the Republican vote but I think you underestimate the cult...they'll lose like 1-2% of their voting base.

I honestly wonder what it would take for them to actually vote guilty. If a congress person or the VP had been dragged out and beaten? Even one of their own? (We know if it was dem they wouldn't care). Would that be enough? Or something truly horrific like an actual lynching of Pence? I think that would get some, but not all. I think we would get a whole lotta "thoughts and prayers" but not guilty votes. These people are truly horrendous. Fuck every last one of them.

Many senate republicans that will vote to acquit simply brush off any suggestion that Trump would run in 2024 or could get elected if he dare tried. Again, it's like they are saying not to bother with impeachment or baring Trump from future office because Trump has learned his lesson and no one would want to go thru another Trump administration anyway. I don't see how they could believe what they are saying. If Trump is not stoped from running in 2024 everyone with a heartbeat knows that Donald Trump will run again in 2024. Senate republicans know it and Trump knows it. SO why pretend that impeachment is not necessary and baring Trump from holding future office is not necessary? We know how Trump is and we know how absolutely insane his base would become at the very thought of a second Trump candidacy. The Trump Tower escalator is being prepped as we speak, the motors oiled and the stairs retreaded. And the cheering Trump on actors have already been hired, even though the old actors from 2015 have yet to be paid.
It's almost like they have a learning disability. No retention of what just happened.

He should be kicked out of the Senate for being part of the insurrection instigation.

If this party caused them to lose 1-2% of the vote every election it would be an unmitigated catastrophe for Republicans. They essentially could never win the presidency again.

I personally think this party will go nowhere and if anything might cost the democrats the votes of disaffected republicans. But, 1-2% off the Republican vote? A death blow. They are already barely hanging on with a rigged system as it is.

Don't forget, Dems have to win by more than that to actually "win" in gerrymandedville.
