please elabortae on "pretty much disappeared".

Do you still see any smudges.... is there any permanant damage?!

how did you used to carry it around.

I'm really going to throw this thing in a bonfire if i see the smallest trace of a smudge!

No permanent damage; I managed to clean the marks out (so I'm guessing it was just skin oil or something). No permanent damage, although I'd guess that if I had treated it worse (oh no! and i should feel bad, given how I've treated this thing so far) it would have some permanent damage/marks. I used to just put it into my bag (it's a book bag) and lug it around. Now I'm being more gentle and careful

Well, I guess if u pay top dollar, u would hve to expect top quality and I must say, this is the first time I'm hearing a t40 owner complain on T40's physicals. I don't own one, but everyone that does say no problems whatsoever with it on the exterior. And i'm sure IBM would hve taken the keys pressing against lcd into account in their design...

which leads me to question the person that brought up this issue...

is the 512 MB of ram 1 Dimm or 2 dimms -- is there space to add more later without having to get rid of a stick of ram

also have you tried to use the ibm security thing? how does it work - is it always on??

and how big is the restore partition - can u get cds too if you want? (in case you have to wipe the whole hard drive)

the 512MB is in one DIMM; I'm not sure if the slot is user-serviceable (I think you access it by removing the keyboard or something), but the 2nd slot is user-accessible, on the underside

I haven't used the IBM security thing yet, so I can't say much about that. I'll get around to it eventually
I said I would call IBM about the recovery CDs, but a midterm came up, so that took higher priority. And another one's coming up next week From what I've gathered, the recovery partition is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3GB...

I just called today and got my recovery CDs. They're coming via USPS So long as you call within 30 days of purchase or receipt or whatever, you can get a set for free. After that it's $35.

I got one more question...

I noticed that the status of my order is now "packing" at ibm.com

How long do they usually ship when the status says "packing"?

I want them to ship it NOW DAMNIT!

I'm not sure. But I would guess that means it's going out soon I got mine from Bill @ Thinkpads.com, and he sent it out almost as soon as he got it, Airborne Express 2nd day

I refuse to get my thinkpad from that guy bill at thinkpads.com.

Two of my associates that ordered from him had bird crap all over the keyboard. Another guy that works for me got a t30 from him a while back and when he went to change the memory, he found feathers inside the computer.

I don't know what kind of jungle that guy has over there ,but Ill never buy from him!

maybe thats why your keys hit your screen... he probably gets defects shipped from IBM and then sells them!

rollseyes;

Look, I don't mean to offend you, but freaking out like this isn't going to help you or make you very credible on this board. If you have a product that has problems, by all means go ahead and post, but ranting about problems with a product you don't even have in your hands yet is just silly.

if you don't feel happy, then just cancel the order; you'll only be missing out on what I consider to be one of the best laptops around right now
if you're going to spend this much money on a laptop, it would only make sense to take care of it. I'm not saying that now I'm babying my machine; I'm just treating it the way that such a machine should be treated (i.e.-no tossing into bags and such). that's the only logical thing to do, so i don't see what the problem is.

littleLouie: CALM down. At least wait until you get your thinkpad to see if it is a problem for you.
if it is a problem and you Really hate your thinkpad because of it -- return it. (or sell it)

It appears as though IBM has finally shipped my computer after over a month of waiting. It will be here on Wednesday, or as I would like to refer to it as "Judgement Day". I am going to subject it to heavy physical testing to see if they live up to the durable thinkpad name. We shall see.

Laptop sleeve? Can you link me to one? Also, have you purchased the screen protector? I would love to keep my T30's screen intact . Thanks in advance!
