Laptop sleeve? Can you link me to one? Also, have you purchased the screen protector? I would love to keep my T30's screen intact . Thanks in advance!

I use one of these to carry my laptop in my backpack.

There's the Swiss Army Warehouse computer sleeve, which I was thinking of getting, but didn't because I couldn't get a figure on the weight.
I was also thinking of getting a Medium Spire boot, but decided instead to get the one that Spicedaddy just pointed out (got the Black Pin Dot version), and I've been very happy with it.

The screen protector should be arriving within the next couple of days, so I'll let you know how well it works.

I really like the T40, it basically has all the options that I am looking for.

However, the price tag is close to being prohibitively high.

I was wondering if it was possible to order the T40 with a SXGA screen with a hard drive smaller than 80GB and with less ram than 512. I could pick up a 40GB 5400rpm drive and laptop ram via a hot deal on these forums. I'm trying to get the price to well under $3000, if that is possible.

Also, does anyone know if and when the T40's will have the new ATI Mobility Radeon 9600?

In my experience, IBM doesn't always keep up with the latest advancements in video technology. (Look at how long it took IBM to put the Radeon 9000 in the T-series.) So, while it would be nice, I wouldn't hold my breath...

As far as I know, the Radeon 9000 isn't in the T series yet. The T40p has the OpenFire GL 9000 but the rest have Radeon 7500, no?

The T series does not even have firewire yet!

They did offer the Radeon 9000 however when they updated their website they removed it . You can still order it though. (See my previous posts.)

the T40 Model #'s: 23739-[1U/2U/4U/6U] all have the same specs except for the type of wireless in them [none/ibm a&b/intel 802.11b/cisco 802.11b] respectively. You can build your own t40 with different specs but they cost even more than the premade ones. If you want the SXGA screen you have to go with the 1.6 ghz one with 80 gig and 512 ram.

And as already said, 9600 could take a while with the IBMs.....

When you think about it, IBM really does make a "no frills" notebook. The top of the line T40 -- which is horribly expensive -- has no Firewire, no CF slots, no DVD-R/RW option, no "smart card" reader, no high-power video card, no external CD player controls, etc.

Now, having said that, I would much rather have a T40 which has none of the above; as opposed to, say, a Toshiba 5205 wich has all of these (except the smart-card reader) but weighs 8+ pounds...

As always, IMHO.

How long do they usually ship when the status says "packing"?

So have you gotten yours yet? I checked my order status today and it says packing on mine as well.

You might also be able to find a T40 Model #: 2373958U. As far as I can tell, it's the cheapest (~$2k) premade model that has SXGA. Doesn't have built-in WiFi, but I know you can at least order the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 3B MPCI 802.11b for ~$100. You might be able to get the other cards (ie Cisco or IBM) separately as well.

T40 237358U => PM 1.3G, 30GB HDD, 256MB RAM, DVD, 14.1" SXGA, 1G net, WiFi-ready, Radeon 9000

BTW, what number did you have to call in order to get a set of recovery CDs? Can you get them from the main sales number or do you call customer support?

I was considering special ordering a T40 through my University. They had a long list of models available, but weren't very thorough in their descriptions. So I basically fed the list one at a time into IBM's site to see which had SXGA. That's how I came up with that particular model (it was the only one with SXGA on the list that wasn't ~$3k). I also remember running across a press release that listed all of the T40 models that have been announced and their availability dates. If I remember correctly, the list was the same as what I could get through my University. So until IBM announces any new models being released, I think the 58U is you're only option for a T40 with SXGA that's relatively inexpensive.

I'm interested in the quality of the keyboard (T23 vs. T40). Anyone care to comment?

Thanks!

Anyone who got their T40 shipped from IBM. Did anyone else notice that when you got your tracking # it was shipped from Mexico to TEMPE, AZ? If so, is shipping still normal, as in you will get it within the days you paid for. It was shipped out Tuesday, and I had 2 day on it so IBM told me it would be here thursday. But the looks of the UPS shipping it wont even be in TEMPE till tomorrow or friday. What is going on?

The laptop screen protector arrived on Monday; it's working great so far. The iKlear stuff they provided managed to get all the marks off the screen
I also ordered a 6-cell battery from IBM (the one that doesn't bulge), for when I really need that extra bit of portability . Their website said it would ship by June 2 or something (!!) so I tried to cancel it. But I don't get a response, and this morning I get an email saying that it's shipped! So I'm sitting here confused. Oh well. Better to have a battery... can't wait till it gets here!

Has anyone tried to upgrade their Radeon 9000 to have 64 MB or ram instead of the 32 they offer?

the only 64MB Radeon 9000 they have is the one in the T40p (2373G1U), and that's a Mobility Radeon FireGL or whatever. The other ones (with 32MB), AFAIK, aren't upgradable to 64MB

I'm wondering if littleLouie got his T40 yet and if he has any comments or a review on it.

I've had my thinkpad for three days now... and I have one thing to say...

I LOVE IT

thats right, so far I find it to be the best laptop I have owned to date (or used for that matter).

My model is the t40p (has the 64mb 9000 GL Pro)

The build quality is amazing, not only for a laptop thats an inch think, but for a laptop in general.

No creaking, and a strong shell guarding the monitor (you can press hard from behind and not hit the LCD which was one of my major concerns <if you press hard in the center you can just touch it.. but you have to really push>).

I purposely gave it a rough treatment, threw it in a bookbag (unprotected) stuffed with other stuff and carried it around NewYork city for an entire day. There were no, I repeat, no marks on the screen whatsoever. This could be becase the keys are so new they are clean, but again, this was a major factor for me in build quality)

It's very snappy, much faster than my desktop (P4 1.7 ghz 512mb ram). I havent installed any games yet or my 3d software to test the video card. DVD playback is the best I have seen (no artifacts at all), and internet video appears w/out artifacts (boob-central.com/live). I believe the video card has a feature that cleans low quality video.

I purchased an echo audio indigo PCMCIA ($95) , so the sound is pristine, it also allows me to produce audio with latency as low as 512 samples (or 5 ms) thanks to ASIO and WMD Kernal streaming drivers.

The laptop is SILENT.. I mean you do not hear a whisper, the fan is amazingly quiet, you really cant hear it unless you put the vent to your ear. The keyboard I wont even get into (again, amazing), trackpoint and touch pad the same. After hours of use it got "slightly" warm. Almost like a body heat warm... far from hot, and not really noticeable.

Audio and other media programs FLY. I am assuming this is due to the 1MB L2 cache? (runs at full processor speed.. it's similar to Intel's Xeon CPU).

Wireless recpetion is also incredible. Walking into my loft, I had already picked up 3 available connections (I dont know where the source was), the signal is strong on all (time to cancel my ISP!), I was chatting on MSN to friends last nigh from my roof overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge.. it's corny but I felt like one of those saps in the Centrino commercials!

All in all I cant find one negative thing to say about it. It's only been 3 days I know, but these 3 days have felt special... almost like a love at first sight feeling.

I got this laptop prepared to smash it upon finding the littlest flaw. Maybe out of frustration because every laptop I have got in the past was never lived up to my expectations. I have used Fujitsu, Sony, Toshiba, the G4 Powerbook, and a thinkpad T30... they don't touch this thing, they dont even come close. The computer in general, it's build, size, preformance, and overall "feel" if that makes sense just continue to blow me away. I wake up every morning and run to it, ready to touch it's keys.

This might all sound sick to you, I dont get out much... but I can finally say I have found the perfect laptop.

My only gripe, the price. It cost me $2900 (bought it during the 15% off sale). It was certainly an investment, but one that I never once felt guilty about since turning it on.

Yeah... I'll be sure to suggest that to AT as a future benchmark...

Glad to hear you like it! I can hardly wait till the end of the summer (when I plan on buying one).

Cheers,

Thanks for the review Louie - congrats on a great purchase

Dell credited me for the D600 I sent back... now I am debating whether or not to get a T40.

Great to hear you like the machine, littleLouie
Definitely the best purchase I've made in recent memory, too
Agreed about the wireless reception, and the 1MB cache is just part of it (the Pentium-M is also based on the Pentium-III/P6 architecture, so you get more IPCs out of it)
