Cool, I'll have to keep that in mind for later this summer when I am actually ready to buy this laptop. (I'll wait for the June update, it's for when I go back to school in September... Queen's Eng!)

But first I have to find a summer job... I hope I'm not going to be in for a long search -- but so far I've found it hard to break into anything computer related, which is what I want.

Back to the topic...

June update??? I thought it was later in the summer? If it's June, I'm waiting. Can anyone confirm with details/evidence?

Based on the benches I've seen (nicowju, lothix, azzaello, etc.), it would appear that the FireGL-equipped T40p is quicker in games than the Radeon 9000 equipped versions, but I don't know if those comparisons were done with comparable drivers. Can anyone give a conclusive statement on which set-up is quicker for games?

Random note:

I got my hands on both a T30 and a T40 to test. And while I agree with most observations made in this forum, one thing I disagree with is keyboard quality. I found the quality of the keyboard better on the T30 than the T40. Both were firm with little to no flex, but the T30 felt like it had deeper key travel. Ditto with the mouse buttons.

That may be because T30 is thicker than T40 and therefore IBM have much more space to play with.

I tested out a T30 some time ago, and the keyboard was slighly less solid feeling than my T40 (I went back and typed on the T30 to make sure). Both are fine keyboards though, and better than the T23's keyboard.

my trackpad buttons seem fairly sturdy.
a friend of mine has the T30 and it's keyboard is almost as good as my T40's. Almost...

I would say that the T40 keyboard is slightly firmer than the T30's, but the T30 has a deeper key travel, which makes all the difference for me.

As for trackpad buttons, I never said they weren't sturdy, I just said they had less depth travel than on the T30.

I've been playing with a 2373-92U for a couple of weeks now.

I didn't go through all the posts on this thread but I don't know if the DVD-R/+R issue has been addresed.

I popped in my friends Memorex DVD-R and it read all his 4.7 Gb of mp3's just fine.
Then I popped in his Memorex DVD+R and it read that as well!

ofcourse, I promptly went on buy.com and bought myself a 10-pack of the -R's.

hope this helps.

IBM also sent me the restore CD's last week and now I need to kill the hidden partition and do a fresh install. has anyone done this?
anything I should look out for.
Thanks

go to the bios (press the Access IBM button upon startup), somewhere in the nice GUI should be a place to get to the main BIOS area... anyway fiddle around in the main BIOS until you find the place to disable the "PreDesktop" Area.

That should be it... There will be 5 gb of space that is unformatted and you just need to format it and set it as a logical drive under the XP Computer Management control panel setting.

I got about 4-4.5 hrs on T40 with normal word processor/e-mail works. On T40p, The estimate is about 6-6.5 hrs under similar usage (I have never used up my T40p battery all the way down to 10%, I just get about 3 hrs before the battery report 50% capacity).

With the 9cell (on the T40p), I got about 3hrs before the battery report 50% charge remain. I've never used it all up I would say, a full charge on the 9cell battery should hold up about 6hrs under normal usage. BTW, I set brightness to 4-5 ticks, sometime bump up to full when I need it.
