I have been hearing and reading In and Out hype for a long time and I finally tried it. Good thing I had not fell for the hype, I wouldn't even put it in my top 5 if I had to make a list. It straight up tasted like a home made burger and it was not bad or anything though. The fries did really disappoint the most, so meh.

Next I need to try Free birds to see how reality compared to interweb hype.

Really, you could make this argument about any fast food chain. They're all pretty crappy but get the job done.

It's legendary for the QPR. $6 for a delicious combo.

The magic is in the customization: 3x2 animal style extra toasted bun both kinds of onions with fries well and a large lemonade = greater than the sum of it's parts.

Oh fuck now I might go to in n out today.

Freebirds is hard, I know a few people who tried it and hated it. Mostly though because they walked out with the most bland/boring beef burrito possible. Unlike Chipotle, Freebirds will let you run yourself into a culinary ditch. It is the burrito place for adults.

Here are my tips:

-Get a flavored tortilla if you don't get a bowl (I like the spinach one)

-Get the black beans, never the refried

-When they ask if you want this or that shredded cheese say "queso instead." They might say it costs more but it shouldn't

-The best meat is the carnitas, but the chicken isn't bad. Avoid the "steak."

-Always add the corn salsa, it is amazing and free. You can also ask for extra rice and beans for free

-top whatever you ordered off with some lime juice

In-N-Out is not "pretty crappy." They use only fresh ingredients, nothing frozen, you won't get a better burger at any other chain anywhere IMO.

also because freebirds SB is not like freebirds everywhere else.

D:

Bojangles is the one that destroys all others in this pathetic competition, in all categories. biscuits and chicken--the only one out of all of these that really do those proper. also...Churches chicken > popeyes.

Only thing popeyes can do is red beans and rice.

Every time I go to California I have In-N-Out because I assume I am just missing something based on all the love it gets here and elsewhere, but it really is just not all that great. Had it again a few weeks ago and still tastes the same; definitely better than a McDonald's/BK/other giant franchise type of burger, but only slightly better.

here is out it works:

In N Out competes with

McDonalds
Wendys
Burger Kind
Hardees
Jack n The Box
DQ...anyone else in that "fast food" class

In N Out isn't uniquely remarkable, but they are certainly better than their competition: value and quality of product. The burgers aren't simply good, but they are relatively cheap and of higher provenance than the others. That is rather important.

They don't compete with 5 Guys or BurgerMeister or any of those "casual semi-cafeteria joints." It's a different tier of restaurant. I like all of them for their own reasons (well, except for the fast food list...I only really like 1 or 2 of those).

The fries at In N Out are a bit disappointing, but the deal with that place is knowing how to order stuff from the hidden menu. Again, this doesn't suddenly make everything mind-blowingly awesome, but it adds to the service what isn't immediately apparent from their simple menu.

Only thing I dislike about In-N-Out are the lines, I went at 10:30PM a few weeks ago and it took me 25 minutes to get my food. The service is ridiculously fast, there were just that many people there. My area has Five Guys, Fat Burger and now Smashburger. So we're not at a shortage for hyped burgers. In-N-Out Protein style is maybe my favorite burger ever. Even compared to a place like Slater's 50/50, Umani Burger, The Counter and Pie & Burger. Places it's honestly unfair to compare a fast food burger to.

my popeyes meal of the gods: buy 2 of the tuesday 1.49 specials (ie 4 pieces of chicken) and 2 sides of RbR. Take all the pieces of skin from the bottom of the 2 specials and pile on top of the RbR. Then give the chicken to the wife and eat the godly RbR with fried chicken skin sprinkles.
