Yes but low frequency would mean the power and physical size of the device would be prohibitive. Also since lower frequencies are non directional everyone on the ship would have said (bowel) problems!

Blast them with 50,000 kW/mm² 2450 MHz so they are well done turkeys in three seconds would be better.

I'd rather see a 50 cal cut their pathetic little boat in two and watch them sink into the murky depths.

Try firing that rpg underwater!

I still vote for the CIWS over a 50 cal. Especially if you could use all tracers for the CIWS.

Perhaps I'll save up some money and get one myself. It would be cool to blast at all the ghetto blaster idiots in their cars.

wow. How did that idea escape me when I first was reading about this story?

GREAT idea!!!

Haha that's the only weapon they allow the public to see.

EDIT:

To the naysayers - you've never had this pointed at you at full power. The dB figure is half the story. It's the frequency and type of sound that's emitted. If I had decent hosting I could send some warbles you could listen to.

The compare to a smoke alarm is a good one. That piercing piezoelectric device rings at 80 to 90 dB but sounds much louder and above everything else. Imagine 115+. Closer where you shouldn't be? Try 145+. That's really, really loud. Standing next to a diesel loco when the horn blows is 145+. It's enough to make your heart skip a beat or two.

If they really wanted to they could make it ultra low frequency and make them crap their pants.

They actually did a mythbuster episode on high and low frequency noise against the human body about that. From the results they got(or didn't get), they ruled it a myth.

As cool as it is, it's utterly useless if your targets are wearing earplugs.

I have a bottle of 31 db noise reduction earplugs on my desk. The price tag on the top says $6.99.

Yeah, but their back-up system is incredibly lethal - a former Ghurka

Hahah, some-one else read that too. Seriously 20 or 30 pirates would be nothing. I love reading the the accomodation medals that some of them have recived. One guy in WWII was shooting at and throwing grenades back at the germans when one of the grenades went off and blew off his arm. He then held off 20 or 30 more germans with one hand. I would vote on that guy any day of the week.

Tour brochures made no mention of high-grade military defences
The shrill sound of an LRAD at its loudest sounds something like a domestic smoke alarm, ATC says, but at 150 decibels, it is the aural equivalent to standing 30m away from a roaring jet engine and can cause major hearing damage if misused.

Damn never new this. Thanks posting this pretty cool

That Mythbusters episode was interesting, but they didn't exactly have the loudest equipment to test with.. I seem to recall reading that the loudest sound produced by a man-made device was made by a 47 foot concrete & steel foghorn that would blow you off your feet & completely destroy your hearing if you stood in front of it when it blew, regardless of what you had stuffed in your ears.. it was so loud it would rupture your eardrums right through your skull apparently. It certainly didn't do anything scifi like vaporize or fry you though, despite being insanely loud.
