In hindsight, what was the worst hardware purchase you have ever made?

For me I would have to say...probably a dual channel kit of Kingston HyperX PC4000 when I ran an Athlon 2500+ @ 2.2GHz on an Epox 8RDA+ motherboard...why the hell did I purchase PC4000 memory for that board? I wish I knew... I promptly sold them after they kept fvcking up (even at DDR400 speeds) and grabbed some nice PC3200...

Probably my Optorite 201 DVD-RW drive. It records at a max of like 2X and now 16X recorders are out. This just after a couple of months since I bought the recorder and an external exclosure for it. Stale!

My current video card Radeon 9550 w/ 256 MB of RAM. I was just too stupid to check on it before it bought, not realizing it was totally WORTHLESS. And now I don't have enough to replace it for a month or so... Grr...

A Creative Labs 52x CDROM several years ago. The thing screamed when spinning and within a couple of years the door started jamming.

In all honesty, IU don't think i made any bad decisions~~ this is mainly because i never went top of the line...more midrange and even if i do haev a bad purchase, didn't make me feel it in the wallet at all

I have a homemade hand-me-down computer that I've just done a little upgrading to and I don't think anything has been too much of a waste. Closest thing would be the FX5900XT and that would only be a bad purchase if I decide to upgrade soon (bought it at christmas, anything less than 1 year out of a gpu would be wasting IMO- unless I keep it in my backup rig).

Looking at this stack of video games that half of them I only played a very short while reminds me of where I have wasted my money : \

I purchased these RAM fan coolers. You're suppose to clip them on over the RAM sticks. I never got around to putting them on. Didn't cost much, but still...

Acer 4x/4x/32x CD-RW drive some years back. It was on sale with rebates at Best Buy, so I grabbed it. (Around $120 I think after all was said and done.)
Burned 90% coasters the entire time I had it. Garunteed coaster if burned at 4x. Higher success rate at 2x. Best at 1x. The Acer CD-RWs that came with the drive lost data integrity within days and I discovered that I had lost over a gigabyte worth of data that I had tossed on a few CD-RWs in blind faith.

Kept me away from burners for years.

Honorable mention: Hercules 3D Prophet II MX. The poor image quality scared me away from nVidia for years. The colors were always very washed and lustless in comparison to my Radeon. I also didn't appreciate how much of a gimp the SDR memory was in comparison to DDR until I looked at my own personal benchmarks. Overclocked to 220MHz SDR, my framerates at 1024x768x32 were barely higher than the TNT2 it was replacing. Obviously anything higher than that was pathetic. But that part was my own fault for thinking I could get away with an OC'ed SDR card into a DDR performance range. Cheap card. I got it around the $90 mark I think. But waste is still waste.

That reminds me of my Acer 2x2x6 burner I bought many moons ago...what a piece of junk that was - hell, I guess they all were back then...I also had that 3D Prophet II MX you mentioned...it never gave me any problems...then again, I never tried to overclock it either...I had fun playing UT with it...

A MSI motherboard , support is beyond dreadful, nevermind sudden death of mainboard itself.

I'd have to say that $400.00 HP scanner that's sitting on my desk taking up space. I stopped using it a month later after buying a digital camera. I think I may have used the scanner once in the last year, and only to make a copy of something.

I'd have to say my zip drive, which now sits in a basket somewhere in my house.

And old Cyrix CPU.. ugh.

Because of that fiasco I wouldn't touch an AMD CPU until I finally read so much info about the Slot A Athlons that I had to.. but man did that company make an Intel fan outta me for years..

To bad there's no middle finger smiley for cyrix.. gets me pissed even today thinking about their crap.

This P4 3Ghz laptop with an SiS chipset that doesn't support HT. Like wtf? And I've noticed the bottom corners of the LCD are slightly darker than the rest of the screen, hopefully it's nothing...

Samsung 753DFX monitor. You can't adjust the horizontal bowing at the edges of the screen which is very annoying and it is very bright even at 40 brightness.

My Cyrix 6x86-PR200+ system. Didn't know Cyrix took PR ratings out of their rear end, was more like a PR150 in every respect. Then in a year the chip had instability with its native speed so I had to underclock it just so I wouldn't get errors. Talk about a POS.

Jep.. I had one of those as well - screaming and door jamming included - and those blasted things weren't even cheap.
