We're near Laihana (kapalua) and are interested in any restaurant suggestions people might have.

There are no restaurants on Maui worth spending your money in...just eat in the condo...

(waits for Whoozyerdaddy to chime in since he lives in Kihei)

If you like the traditional Hawaiian mixed plate type of food:

http://www.alohamixedplate.com/

Owned by (or was owned by) the same folks who own the Old Lahaina Luau...best luau in all the Hawaiian Islands. (IMO)

But of course, (as they say) LMGTFY:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=2f31e528db4662ca

We haven't been to Maui since Christmas 2007, so I don't know what's changed in the restaurant scene and what hasn't.

If you want what IMO is the best food on Maui...

http://www.mamasfishhouse.com/

it's spendy...but fabulous...and their drinks are wonderful as well...

Cheeseburger in paradise. Lahaina is nice. Do the Molokini boat snorkeling tour. I like Kanapali beach.

Lahaina grill if you want to go out for a red wine/expensive night. The veil meatballs are amazing.

Kahului by the airport:
http://www.da-kitchen.com/
Kapalua, 25% off most of the sushi menu before 6pm on certain nights:
http://www.sanseihawaii.com/
The Roys just north of the Kaanapali exit and south of Kapalua isn't bad either - same plaza as Maui Brewery.
On the way back to the airport we usually grab a bite at Zippy's (Kahului) and i usually get their oxtail soup...

Aloha Mixed Plate is awesome. We ate there for lunch several times. There's also a little Chinese place that's practically right across the street from Aloha Mixed Plate, but I don't remember what it's called.

Mama's Fish House is good, too. A bit of a drive, but if you do the road to Hana, it's a good stop on the way back.

Star Noodle, Mama's Fish House, Aloha Mixed Plate were all among our favorites on a recent trip. Star Noodle as a James Beard semifinalist, and as such I think it is often surprisingly difficult to get a table. For breakfast we liked the food and loved the scenery and atmosphere of the Gazebo which is fairly close. There's always a wait, though. Their mac nut pancakes are the BEST we had in Hawaii. Da Kitchen is great too, but we never got to try the one in the wharf so I can't vouch for that one (we tried the one near the airport)

A lot of people like Honokawai Okazuya for plate lunch; I found it a bit overrated but did really enjoy the sweet chili salmon.

Ululani's (near Kimo's, etc. on the main drag) has the best shave ice I've had on any Hawaiian island.

while it is a chain restaurant, my wife and I really liked Bubba Gump Shrimp Co in Maui. Was our first time going there, and we actually ended up eating there 3 times on our honeymoon.

i can tell you to steer clear of the hotel restaurants at the Westin. They were overpriced and not very good.

We're heading there in June so this thread is def going to come in handy. We're staying in a condo so do have a full kitchen but still plan to head out to dinner a few times especially considering we're sitting really close to Front Street.

Boomer, we were thinking about doing one luau and will definitely look that one up.

oh the fish taco's at the little taco stand on the road to hana were pretty good too, but i don't think they were as good as the hype surrounding it.

another vote for Bubba Gump. We loved the atmosphere there and the food was pretty good also. We ended up eating there twice in our 5 night stay in Maui

If you plan on doing the Old Lahaina Luau, you'll want to call two weeks in advance to get your reservations. We made the mistake of waiting until we got to Maui to try and get reservations, and they were booked out like 10 days (we were only in Maui for 5).

I've heard dining out in Maui (or Hawaii in general) is ridiculously expensive. Generally speaking, how true is that relative to most vacation beach spots? Like I said we're going to be in a fully furnished condo so it's not a huge deal but I'd definitely like to enjoy the local fare more frequently than dining in.

I love fish tacos and am going to drive to Hana. I better see this stand!

it is the "famous" fish taco place that you read about in the guides on going to Hana, you probably won't miss it. they were expensive too for some fish tacos, thought they would be cheaper. was also surprised it was mainlanders running the joint heh.

i went in 2008 and i had heard how "expensive" hawaii was and was pretty surprised that the prices were hardly any different than back home. nothing was noticeably more expensive other htan I htink gas was like 40 cents more per gallon or something. maybe things in the grocery store were like a couple cents more but nothing drastic by any means.

It can't be that expensive, most residents have a fairly low income.
