Just an update of sorts. After reading some of the older posts, and having missed one of the threads on his dissappearance, I have been able to link enough info together to give us a clear picture of Hawkeye. I am reasonably certain that this is correct.

Hawkeye once posted on Memorial day that he was a veteran on the 187th Airborne Infantry, 3rd Battalion, Delta Company. I have confirmed that the 187th was organized under the 101st Airborne Assault Division. The 187th are nicknamed the Rakasans, which he also referenced in his post. He described a battle on Hill937 in Vietnam. The history of the 187th details this battle, and mentions specifically an incident in which Delta Company had called in a medevac chopper to evacuate some wounded. As the chopper was loading wounded, it was hit by an RPG and destroyed. This corroborates with Hawkeye's recollection.

William Cashman was a passenger on Flight 93 that crashed in PA. He was a former member of the 101st, which matches. I think most people missed the link between the 187th and the 101st. He would have been the right age as well, and everything else fits. The only thing I have not been able to find is confirmation that William Cashman served in the 187th, but I am reasonably certain that was the case.

Flight 93 - Cashman

As well liked as he was, perhaps we could all donate $1.00 or more for his family or to donate to the September 11 Fund in his name. It would be a small price to pay for all the hot deals he brought to this forum and others.

Just reading some of these posts I am sorry that I never got to meet the man. I dig some digging on the internet and I found a picture of Willam Cashman here. Link

Thank you Mr. Cashman for you service to your country and the AT community

Strange, I am reading Among The Heroes. I was having my truck worked on earlier today and stopped reading right after Mr. Cashman is introduced in chapter 7 pg. 71 who was on United Flight 93. God be with you. RIP

One of the stories was written by his niece, and she signed it with her e-mail addy.

We could probably e-mail her and see if she can confirm William Cashman was Hawkeye. I'm sure someone would probably know if he had/used that nickname.

Just a thought!

I've taken the liberty of sending an email to that address.

No one ever heard from him again... What a shame, he was always offering his help.

Those bastards killed a lot of good people.

I remeber Hawkeye PM'ing me when I accidentally posted in the wrong forum. He was so nice, he was telling me how if I don't edit the inside of the posts ppl would tear me apart on the forum. He said he lived in Ramsey and reccemended a lot of good place to look for deals. I am sorry to hear that he is gone, based on the responses we've got here on the forums I can tell that he certainly was the type of person that people will miss dearly, a nice man with a great heart. My god be with You Bill.

I believe azraele did that earlier in the year, according to one of the older threads. Never saw a post on a reply thoug, so I assume nothing came of the request.

According to Kevman above, he said Hawkeye was from Ramsey, NJ. The two articles about William Cashman state he's from West New York, NJ/North Bergen, NJ (around a mile from each other), while Ramsey is 22-23 miles from North Bergen.

I'm still hoping that he'll pop back in sometime, and be greatly touched by this, and call us silly for worrying about him.

He is greatly missed.

Aww man... today has been a really long day. This brings 9/11 closer to home than it has ever been for me.

Even one of his last acts was a Hot Deal. He gave up his life to prevent terrorists from getting to Washington. I normally love to come to AT and read about stuff that I don't need and can't afford, but with everything that today represents, and getting to hear about how such a great man was taken from us, I'm too bummed to even read the regular hot deal posts. Although I unfortunately never had a chance to personally get to know the gentleman, hes the closest person that I know that was involved in the attacks. May god bless his family and friends.

When I read this thread, I was in great disbelief. We all know that he was a great man. I remembered he PMed me hot deals on digital cameras. RIP, buddy.

If he was in the military, could he be away from home? Maybe he got an urgent call from his army superior to immidiately fly to Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks. Maybe he is still fighting in Afghanistan in some missions to bring those assholes down. I cant believe this.
