I remember when this all first happened and everybody was looking for him, posting what happened to Hawkeye. I believe that the forum itself might have more info on him. Perhaps somebody could actually confirm all that has been thought by so many on the forum.

I was fortunate enough to be assisted by Hawkeye when I first joined the forums. He was a truly unique contributor. His deals were detailed, specific, and ethical. If this is true, the forum has truly lost a great deal master. RIP and warmest regards to his family on the anniversary of their loss.

I wholeheartedly agree. I didn't post any of the geographic info I found for anyone to try to track him down. In no way should anyone try to contact any family. I also think that Anand and his mods have enough sense to keep Hawk's private info private.

I personally believe Hawkeye WAS William Cashman, and if so, have no doubts he went down fighting.

While it would certainly be tragic if Hawkeye WAS lost on September 11, I cannot help thinking that we're just using the attacks to explain his mysterious disappearance. I remember that we had this discussion a year ago when people were wondering where he had gone, and no one was able to come up with a satisfactory explanation that he HAD been killed in the attacks. For all we know, he may not even have worked in New York, and considering the fact that the only fact we truly know about him is that he lived in New Jersey--a state with a population numbering in the millions--it might be silly to more than speculate that he was one of the 3,000 people who were lost in the terrorist attacks. People come and leave the forums all the time. We don't even know that Hawkeye disappeared ON September 11. It may be proper to mourn his passing (away from the forums or perhaps from life), but I think I would personally find it creepy if somebody DEFINITELY assumed that I was lost due to something that--allow me to be a bit blunt here--affected only an impossibly small percentage of the population of New Jersey.

So the only proper facts are:
1. We do not know if he is dead.
2. We do not know if he worked in New York City.
3. We do not know he ever visited the World Trade Center.
4. We do not know that he disappeared on September 11.
5. We do not know anything.

My point is that there are literally a million reasons for his possible disappearance, and any concrete explanation would be no more than premature speculation. There isn't so much as a shred of evidence that he died in the attacks. And, if I may add one more point, the sheer chances would be very much against it.

It is believed he was on a plane (flight 93) not in the World Trade Center. I do not know enough about the specifics to comment on the possibilty that he was a victim of 9/11 or that his name was indeed William Cashman. I hope he is alive and well and while my curiosity would like to be satisfied as to whether he is alive or not, I am happy to remember him as he was (or is)... a great contributor to this forum and a very helpfull person.

I am sorry to bother you, but I am trying to find information relating to one of my online friends. I subscribe to a tech forum regularly, and there was another user their that went by the nick of HawkeyeNJ. In a few discussions he mentioned that he was part of the 187th Infantry, 3rd Battalion, Delta company. Ever since the 9/11/01 attacks on the WTC and DC, no one has heard from him. Many members of this online community believe he may have fallen victim to these attacks. If you know anyone who may have gone by the nickname of "Hawkeye" please let us know. We have one main suspect who is confirmed to have passed in these attacks, but the information provided states that he was part of the 101st airborne, not the 187th, but this could be press error. Well, never used Anandtech until earlier this year, but from everyone's statements, HawkeyeNJ truly sounded like a really nice guy. May the truth shed light to all well wishers and concerned ATer's.

Long time lurker, but I remember that he helped me out with quite a few deals and I don't believe he was ever short with anyone on these boards. He was truly a helpful person.

I used to spend a ton of time on some 3dfx gaming newsgroups. There used to be a poster who posted at least 10+ times a day who one day stopped posting. Everyone on the group had speculated on his whereabouts, with some even thinking that he had died. A year later he posted basically saying that his personal life became too dominated with computers and games and that he had to take a break to spend more time with his family and get out more often.
9/11 was a very traumatic experience for many people. I was in a state of depression and shock for a month, and still feel ill when thinking about the tremendous loss of life. It's easy to make the assumption that he did perish based on his activity within Anandtech, but it's also very feasable that the events of 9/11 made him re-examine his family life and forced him to abandon certain aspects of his lifestyle. It's also possible that family members or close friends died on 9/11... The articles that discuss the person who many of you suspect is HawkeyNJ doesn't even mention him as a computer enthusiast. For someone that had over 2000 posts I'm sure it would have been listed as one of his favorite pastimes or hobbies. But then again every thread on these boards is pure speculation and we won't know the truth until some facts come to light...

P.S. the captions underneath the photographs in the article are reversed...I know this because Jeremy Glick went to my university, and I know for a FACT that he was not a blonde haired woman. Also notice that Cashman would be a woman in the bottom but if you reverse it you realize the woman and man there are a couple(the Petersons caption from above).

So cashman is the man with sunglasses on. Bottom row of the first picture 5th across.

I've read the various posts about HawkeyeNJ since his disappearance last year. While there is a good chance he is William Cashman, we can't be sure.

Best evidence:
1. Match of HawkeyeNJ's Memorial Day post to Cashman serving in the 187th Infantry/101st Airborne
2. Timing of no longer receiving posts from HawkeyeNJ with Sept. 11, 2001.

Conflicting evidence:
1. Ramsey NJ is far enough from North Bergen NJ so that the towns would not be used interchangeably
2. I believe Ramsey NJ is accurate in that Ramsey is 15 min from Paramus, NJ and West Nyack, NY. North Bergen could be 15-20 to Paramus, but would be about 45-50 min to W. Nyack.

While it is possible that Cashman could have moved from North Bergen to Ramsey, nothing in the articles I've read, say anything about a Ramsey, NJ residence.

HawkeyeNJ was a great contributor to AT. I looked forward to his posts. William Cashman was one of the heroes of Flight93. Maybe this is the same person, maybe not. Either way, we're talking about a good person with a great heart.
