I was leaning away from the cancer theory because it seemed like whatever happened to HawkeyeNJ happened suddenly, whereas cancer tends to be a slow enough process for the victim to say goodbye first. Then I noticed that there was a big drop in the final month of his participation on AT. He posted nearly every day right up until the end of July, 2001, then suddenly there was nearly a whole month that went by with no word from him until his final posts at the end of August. In any case, he always changed the title of his posts to "PLEASE LOCK" after the week's ads had expired, but he never came back to change the title of his final week's scans, 9/2-9/9.
We know he had cancer in his history, as detailed in
this thread among others. He did apologize for being late with his scans once because he had been sick, although he didn't say from what. But I don't know if he ever specified whether he still had cancer, or if he was in remission. If he was close to death, he either didn't know or didn't let on to our group.
Here is his thread where he talks about his condo. Sounds it was a fairly big complex with a garage but no elevator.
Here he explains that his friend's company printed the flyers, that's how he got them early. I don't know who prints those flyers in NJ though.
His Hotmail address was registered with a Mahwah zip code, 07430, but
here he mentions that he had a P.O. box at
Mailboxes Etc., so he could have lived in Ramsey and used a Mahwah zip. I didn't find any posts where he actually said he lived in Ramsy, but I think someone else said he mentioned it in a PM.
It's likely that he used HawkeyeNJ as his login at some of our favorite hot deals stores (Staples etc.) but I don't know if there's any way to connect that login with a real name.
I think most of us would like to know what happened to him, at least to provide a closure to the mystery. He was a big contributor here.
