2D punching contest genre to death.
the WW2 shooter genre to death.
The WW2 strategy genre to death.
Not too distant future FPS to death.
Gritty dark brutal FPS.
Sci fi FPS.
Sandbox FPS.
Sandbox driver.
Sandbox crazy do stupid shit genre.
Fantasy RPG.
Fantasy Hack n Slash.
Fantasy FPS.
Fantasy RTS.
Fantasy TBS.
God-awful sports games from E.A.
Horror survival 3rd and 1st person.
Arena shooters.
Mario having the same god damn adventure every 3 months.

And probably some others I cant think of right now.

What genre needs milking now?
I'd like to see more high quality jet sims and space sims. (X Rebirth kinda dropped the ball)
Would also like to see some 4X games NOT in outer space.
A high quality MetroidVania released for Windows that has oodles of areas to explore and perhaps an easy utility for map making.
A sequel to JetsNguns.
A sequel to Atomic Cannon.
A top quality casino game, with lots of options and really good poker AI.

Not exactly high quality, but "A Valley Without Wind" and the second one is as close to a recent game in that style. Something that is light on the "hard" pathways (you can literally carve your own path), would be Starbound and a game that is released before it, Terraria. Both lack many boss battles and a continuous story, but you can fully explore and "upgrade" yourself along the way (may involve a bit of crafting and gathering).

Mario having the same god damn adventure every 3 months.

That mentality is probably as of recent, being you saw with New Super Mario Brothers Wii, U, Luigi... and before that with the DS.

And there is Super Mario 3D Land and World that also does not help that mentality, but 3 months is a bit exaggerated.

Between Mario's full 3D platforming releases, 3D World is about the right time from Galaxy 2 (Galaxy 2 being made because the game creators had a lot of good ideas they want to put out that would have gone to waste if not made into a second game).

I see your point here. There are a lot of games that seem cookie cutter in a way. They just reuse the same ideas over and over adding a new gimmick or different art style.

I think now the only thing that separates most games is the story. Games can be similar to what came before but the story and the plot twists in the story really make it unique and stand out among the crowd.

Similar in other media as well. The same tropes and idioms get reused (not that some tropes are a bad thing). All of which are devices for media (art, written, motion, interactive).

Need Naval combat games. Doesn't even have to be age of sail like AC IV. I could see an epic country v country modern naval warfare game with carrier fleets and subs. Need it stat.

Massively multiplayer FPS hasn't been milked enough. There's only really been Planetside, WW 2 Online and a few pretenders.

We need a Battlefield MMOFPS, and someone needs to do a good star wars MMOFPS. And both of them, I'm not saying they should be realism sims, but they shouldn't include 3D spotting and killcams and other aids, and they should have some kind of overarching strategy aspect that Planetside 2 may be aspiring to but hasn't put in yet.

And the SW one should have space and interplanetary travel. A tall order I know.

It sounds like the complaint isn't about milking a genre, it's about milking the general release of games. Games come out from every direction all the time. You can have 3 major military shooters out in the same holiday season, though they might be a bit different (CoD is straightforward, Battlefield has vehicles, Halo has sci-fi).

You play a lot of games, and a lot get released. You'd complain about movies being done to death if you watched them all the time like folks play games too. When you complain that EVERY genre is milked to death (for the most part), it is that genres are being milked, or that you just play games too much?

A top quality casino game, with lots of options and really good poker AI.

What not just play any of the various free online poker games? Better yet, why not just go to a real casino?

I don't think there's enough of a market there to justify a huge budget for that type of game.

Forgot about MMO's. I'll take any that allow or have:

Some form of challenge
Able to meet new people
Able to group with friends
Able to get lost in the world
Able to have grand adventures in

There is only so much you can do with a flat 2D screen. I think playing games on a flat 2D screen has been milked to death and we need something new.

When we get real holograms I'll jump on board.

And stereoscopy (what most of you mistakenly call 3D displays) are not what we need. They will not sate my appetite for true 3D.

Agreed. Romeo and Juliette is, one could say, a plot that has been milked to death, but when done well (West Side Story, for ex), will always be popular. Getting back to games, I would like to see some space single player games ala Wing Commander/Jedi Knight genre. Less RPG, more story and combat. Mass Effect was kind of like that, but the story line faltered at the end and not a lot of space combat.

As for technical innovation, there's Occulus Rift (still in it's infancy)...and sometime in the future true virtual reality...anyone read Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt"? Kind of gets you thinking.

Sounds like you're getting old Shorty . Seriously I know what you mean. I've been gaming for a long time and there's very little that comes out that's truly original. Most stuff is just the same old rehash games/genres with better graphics and sound.

currently it seems a lot of companies are making MOBAs. everyone wants that next League of Legends/DOTA2. recently off the top of my head there's Strife by S2, Infinite Crisis, and Blizzard is making Heroes of the Storm.

and of course, there are like 387257235892 zombie games out now. zzz

doesn't have the map maker you want, but Valdis Story is really solid.
