Ok, you've stated this in a thread in P&N. Where the eff do you live??? My daughter is an ICU charge nurse, she's part of the union and gets nowhere near what you're describing. She also works at a level 1 trauma hospital, not some backwoods place. I've known plenty of nurses in my life and they don't earn what you're claiming either.

Lol, you think nurses will work for a discount? They're all unionized and will go on strike the second they dont get their mandated 10% annual raise and pension paid off. Nurses around here easily clear 2-300K with OT.

To be fair, they can probably lose everything they have if they screw up even once. Same with regular doctors or pretty much anyone in the medical industry. So they do earn their pay. Personally I would do a job like that for maybe 15-20 years then retire off all that cash and invest a big chunk of it and live off the interest. Could still do a small low stress job on the side too just to keep busy.

Same with pro sports, if I played in the NHL I'd just take a 5-10 year contract and then retire off the money. Some of those guys make like 10 mil per contract, it's pretty crazy. Of course they do have to put their bodies through a lot and not just anyone can play good enough.

Not for mal-practice, but for stealing drugs, yes. As I mentioned, my sister is a nurse anesthetist, and it is surprising to me how many nurses/Dr. Lose their job for this reason.

My buddies dad quit his regular gig when he was 40 to return to school and become an Anesthesiologist. When he got out of school and got his first real gig, he was making serious bank for a few years. Changed his overall life.

Then he got busted/fired for watching porn on one of the monitors in the OR prior to a procedure. What an idiot. Couldn't land a job with another hospital after that incident.

I had a root canal done a couple of months ago. Between 2 visits, the orthodontist probably spent a total of 30 minutes with me. He was good - damn good. I'd rather have him do a root canal than go in for a simple tooth cleaning - that much more comfortable.

That's all he does all day - root canals. 8 hours a day, nothing but root canals. And, based on the cost, the guy is making a crap ton of money.

I'd go bonkers - even with the income, I wouldn't be happier than I am now. And, there are plenty of studies about overall happiness & income that show above a certain level, you're no happier. To do the same thing over and over and over, day after day after day?? Not the life for me. I don't know enough about an anesthesiologists job to comment one way or the other, but without an ample amount of variety, I'd get very bored, quickly.

CA. Hospital is currently negotiating with the CNA for a new contract and they bring up the fact that the highest paid nurses in the hospital (some ICU nurses) are pulling in 300k+ to try and hold down raises. I know the OR nurses here are making low 200s, one just bought a 4000 sqft house on 3 acres of land.

CA is a special case. anywhere else in the US they aren't making anywhere near that much money

same goes for Docs

my BIL gets paid 50% of WHATEVER HE BILLS, as an orthopedic surgeon in CA, he lives in the boonies as well, and clears over a million a year. that 50% deal is what the hospital deal is apparently. the hospital doesn't directly employ him, but that's how it works

if he was in NY where I am with the same work load he would make maybe 1/2 of that

Ive heard that CRNA's can make 150-200 but I really doubt a regular nurse can make anywhere near those numbers.

you tend to get paid more in the boonies than in desireable places, the whole supply and demand thing.

I think it helped that my dad's partner was his brother. That and the facts that their father took care of the office (i.e. billing) for a great deal of their career and that the atmosphere in the hospital (as with most hospitals, AFAIK) was one of great camaraderie. Quite a few times I had a meal in that hospital's diner and the atmosphere was one of warmth and friendship. I've since been in a lot of work situations (i.e. my own) where the mood was nowhere near that.

If you're looking for a specialty in which you may be happy, I think they say that obstetrics or pediatrics rate well.

My MIL was an anesthesiologist.

She made excellent money obviously - about $300K/year (this was in the 70s/early 80s) - but over a third of her salary went to malpractice insurance. At the time, anesthesiologists paid the highest malpractice insurance in the industry, I don't know if this has changed since. In addition, she got deathly ill from the chemicals. This has hopefully changed since but it was a pretty common thing then. And as stated by others, she worked extremely long hours. After her illness she quit doing that and started a private, holistic medicine practice. She was so disillusioned with the whole industry that she basically forbade my wife from going into it, something that bothers her to this day.

In the end we're all going to die anyway.

Money is nice though.

Not really, noone arrives that way. As stated in the thread, after HS graduation it's 4 years of premed, 4 years of med school, 4 years internship/residency. I suspect that very few med students have their sights on anesthesiology.

I think you mean endodontist.

They say that an anesthesiologist's job is 99% boredom and 1% utter panic.

And yeah, in the US, nurse anesthetists make decent money. Like $150000. In Canada, they are almost non-existent, for various reasons. Respiratory tech anesthesia assistants are more common though in some areas.

According to that chart, plastic surgery is lower than I thought and dermatology is much higher.

Many years ago my youngest sister graduated from dental tech school and met a young man that had graduated from dental school. Together they started a general practice. Eventually they married. A couple of years ago they sold the practice and retired. When I asked him why the retirement he said "You can only put your fingers in someone's mouth every day for so long."

Maybe that's why dentist have the highest rate of suicide?
