In my next life I'm coming back as an Anesthesiologist

It looks great from the outside, but I'm almost 28, >200k in debt, and regularly working 70+ hours per week. Granted, this is the first year of my residency, but the grass is always greener. You have to essentially give up your 20's for this job. I don't personally regret the decision (at least at this point) because anesthesiology is the only career I could ever actually see myself doing. I don't think I could sit at a desk all day every day. Get back to me in a little over 3 years when I'm finally making that attending physician paycheck lol

According to that chart, plastic surgery is lower than I thought and dermatology is much higher.

There are very few dermatologists in the country (relative to other speciailites) and the people who tend to complain about skin problems tend to be wealthy people with good insurance or paying cash. The surprising one on the list for me is allergy, thats supposed to be one of the highest paying fields for some reason. The head allergist where I did residency is pulling a million bucks a year.

Surprises me, too. Allergy shots make bank, especially when nursing is doing all the injecting which is generally the system of the guys I know. They do quite well for themselves.

They also have to keep a pillow handy to smother the screams if you wake up halfway through your surgery.

I had a root canal done a couple of months ago. Between 2 visits, the orthodontist probably spent a total of 30 minutes with me. He was good - damn good. I'd rather have him do a root canal than go in for a simple tooth cleaning - that much more comfortable.

That's all he does all day - root canals. 8 hours a day, nothing but root canals. And, based on the cost, the guy is making a crap ton of money.

I'd go bonkers - even with the income, I wouldn't be happier than I am now. And, there are plenty of studies about overall happiness & income that show above a certain level, you're no happier. To do the same thing over and over and over, day after day after day?? Not the life for me. I don't know enough about an anesthesiologists job to comment one way or the other, but without an ample amount of variety, I'd get very bored, quickly.

It is his decision to make. In fact he is already an anesthesiologist in this lifetime. Of course he happens to be his own patient and his anesthesia of choice is beer.

Mayne is right on this one... Anesthesiologists make mad bank! I know a guy who married one, and he lives in a McMansion in Arizona now. That's where her job took her, so that's where they moved. His job? Pfft... who cares, it payed like 1/5th of what she makes
