My sister is a nurse anesthetist (CRNA). She cleared just short of 300k last year working a lot of overtime. She did pay out the butt for mal-practice insurance though.

Yep. Currently in VERY high demand, especially in rural hospitals with no nearby anesthesiologist.

Easiest Dr job there is and they make more than lots of others Dr. Go figure lol

radiologist. The biggest problem for a radiologist is interrupting his golf games 3 days out of a week to drive over to the hospital and peek at some scans.

Anaesthesiology isn't simple, but it is pretty heavily protocol-driven now, which is a good thing. They make a lot because they have to pay out the ass in malpractice insurance. There is quite the range in salaries, though.

So, how much college is involved?

Could I take a class online and start in a month?

It's a skill where serious danger to someone is involved. Too much or too little...it has to be just right. If you don't want to die or experience waking up in major pain, you'd gladly pay whatever they want.

NVM...

You people act like you just need two years of junior college. It's much more complicated than that.

First, you need 4 years of college. Then you need another 4 years of graduate education leading to a degree in medicine. You're not even done yet, because you need to complete 4 more years in an anaesthesiology residency.

That's 12 years of school! And I have a hunch the workload is more than what most of us are used too.

You were honestly unfamiliar with the amount of schooling and time required to graduate from medical school and complete a residency? You must be kidding.

To be fair, they can probably lose everything they have if they screw up even once. Same with regular doctors or pretty much anyone in the medical industry. So they do earn their pay. Personally I would do a job like that for maybe 15-20 years then retire off all that cash and invest a big chunk of it and live off the interest. Could still do a small low stress job on the side too just to keep busy.

Same with pro sports, if I played in the NHL I'd just take a 5-10 year contract and then retire off the money. Some of those guys make like 10 mil per contract, it's pretty crazy. Of course they do have to put their bodies through a lot and not just anyone can play good enough.

That's what malpractice insurance is for. Random screwups do happen and unless there's something else going on, like gross negligence or a pattern of incompetence, insurance pays a settlement and those doctors keep practicing their specialty.

Have you not seen how many doctor shows are on tv? We know this already.

In 50 years 80% of the jobs around today will be gone or completely different.

That's actually a scary thought, but it will probably happen. it's already starting to happen. A lot of jobs are either being outsourced or automated these days. The whole free trade crap has pretty much killed the job market, and it's only going to get worse with the TPP.

I imagine at some point the economy is going to completely go to trash as a result and stuff will have to change though. If companies end up automating and outsourcing everyone out of a job, then that means nobody can afford their products/services. On the other hand, it might still work, because companies will just buy from each other. It's always business transactions that make more money anyway, so a lot of companies can probably survive without consumers. Things are going to be grim in the future I think. The worse has yet to begin.

My dad was an anesthesiologist, so I, of course, didn't consider it. His brother went for the same specialty and they were a team mostly at one hospital, and very well liked by everyone there, AFAIK, and of course the ones who mattered for their success were the surgeons who chose to have them on-hand. They made very good money but weren't really wealthy.

Uh, there's more to it than putting an ether mask over the patient's mouth and twiddling your thumbs. It's the anesthetist's job to keep the patient alive. The surgeon does not enjoy going out to the waiting room and announcing that the operation was a success but the patient died.

My dad worked pretty long hours, he got up really early (~6AM) every day but Sunday and would immediately drive off to the hospital and start doing his rounds. He'd visit the patients one by one and assess the operations forthcoming. He'd come home pretty late in the evening.

Of course, anesthesiology today is a much different field than it was when my dad got into it.

Probably because my older brother (only older sibling, and older than me by almost 6 years) was already halfway through medical school when I got to the university. I just thought I had to take my life in a different direction, didn't know exactly where. I majored in subjects I was really good at -- the mathematical sciences.

Lol, you think nurses will work for a discount? They're all unionized and will go on strike the second they dont get their mandated 10% annual raise and pension paid off. Nurses around here easily clear 2-300K with OT.

You may want to look up CRNAs.
