2006-2010, the Patriots have made 5 1st Rd Draft picks..

2006 Laurence Maroney RB, no longer with the team
2007 Brandon Meriweather S , No longer with the team
2008 Jerod Mayo MLB, Obvious stud
2009 No first round pick
2010 Devin McCourty CB, Stud

(Not including 2011, as its too early to judge)
Based on that... still think the Redskins gave up their whole "future" with two 1st Round picks?

Well, obviously, we don't know how Luck and RG3 will turn out. But I did read something very interesting yesterday that shocked me. In the ENTIRE HISTORY of the league, only 3 QBs who were drafted #1 overall have made it to Canton. ONLY 3 since this was tracked starting in 1936. Without looking, can anyone name them?

Given that QBs have become top pick centic relatively lately in the age of the league, nothing surprising about that.

In the 2009 draft Dallas traded their 1st round draft pick for Roy Williams.

They also traded 2000 and 2001 1st round draft picks for Joey Galloway.

Redskins aren't the only "dumb" team who mortgages their futures...

A lot better track record than most. Also, you're forgetting that that New England does a lot of draft day trades, getting even more draft picks. They've held multiple rd 1 picks and traded them off for more picks.

What's your point? I don't deny that the deal for Roy Williams was beyond stupid. I didn't like Roy Williams then, and thought it was a harebrained move at the time for a mediocre, overrated receiver.

Right... The Pats have done better than most, and still theres no way youd say that by giving up 2 first round picks theyd have "no future".

This mathematical analysis lacks inclusion of countless other important variables... Simply averaging these things out hides superlatives, which is exactly what the Redskins are counting on here.

exactly, its a HUGE gamble, a gamble that is stupid according to the math

Those picks were very late first round picks, except for Jerod Mayo, who was an early pick. I don't see the Redskins making the playoffs in teh next 2 seasons, which means their picks will probably be in the middle of the 1st round. They could make the playoffs, because it's the NFL, but they're the worst positioned team right now in that division. Keep in mind that the Patriots haven't been the greatest drafters recently. (Also, Mccourty sucks )

Still, mid first rounders probably pan out into really good players about half the time. But the other thing that you're ignoring is your assumption that RG3 is going to definitely be a success. If you could have 3 first round draft picks and a 2nd rounder, there's a good chance you come out with 1-2 studs and at least one other solid player, versus the risk you take with RG3 (and the upside, of course).

It's a bold move, but if it doesn't pan out to be a rousing success, and the Redskins falter again, then they won't have top draft choices to quickly rebuild the team.

Not impressed with McCourty all that much. Meriweather was a thug, Maroney was lazy.

Solder from 2011 looks really good, got a lot of time thanks to injuries, and makes a really good fullback on a couple plays.

Looks like the Redskins got the better part of this deal

Going to disagree here.

The 'skins got RG3, who already has been injured once so, from a longevity standpoint, who knows. The Rams got draft picks for days and were in the playoff hunt until two weeks ago. I'd say the Rams still made out as they are the youngest team in the NFL and have a stranglehold on the draft for a good bit.

This thread was fun to read from the beginning though.

Looks like the gamble paid off quite well.

Remains to be seen. Keep in mind that the price they paid for Griffin may hamstring them for a couple of years in the draft. I think they paid too much but on the other hand, I like the gutsy call and other perennial doghouse teams without QBs (Cardinals, Bills, etc) need to think about making similar moves.

Short term, Redskins are happy. But let's remember that RGIII is a quarterback who has already missed time due to injuries and let's remember that Cam Newton looked like a future HoF-er as a rookie and the league figured him out pretty quickly.

The Rams are still many seasons away from reaping value out of their end of the trades. I think that despite how good RGIII has been this season that 10 years from now this will look like a big win for St Louis and another dumb-ass disaster by Snyder and the Redskins.

Hey, how about all of those "pocket collapsing runs" last night? Oh wait a minute, NONE of them were. They were ALL designed plays. Once again, you were wrong.

The Redskins paid too much.

hold on, you're talking about a well-designed play where rg3 gains first downs and slides safely or runs out of bounds like it's a bad thing lol

Considering they picked up a 6th round running back Alfred Morris that turned out to be golden and they only pay him 400k. Even if RGIII does get hurt they got Kurt

Worth it.
