I am looking for a good web based email as I use several computers and need to be able to access my old emails from any of them.
I have tried the following and did not care for them for the reasons listed.

gmail- what a mess. does not organize the way I do.
yahoo - can not send emails without some type of verification gibberish. (I am visually impaired and plain text is hard enough for me to read.)
hotmail - SPAM dumpster.
my ISP - read emails only stay on their servers for 60 days.

Thanks for any suggestions

I never took to webmail solutions. Couldn't you use a standard client(I prefer Thunderbird) on each of your machines, with it set to leave messages on server? That way as you used each machine, you'd download all the messages, and it would be on each computer before they expired in 60 days.

If you can setup IMAP with any of the services you can use a desktop client that supports IMAP and all changes you make will be server side.

No this will not work as I sometimes use a friends computer.

You listed all the webmail apps I'm familiar with. A hardware solution would be to use a portable mail client on a thumbdrive, then do what I suggested above. That way all your mail would be on the thumbdrive, and not on a foreign computer.

IMO, gmail is simply THE best webmail interface invented. Conceptually, Folders == Labels. Functionally, Labels > Folders.

I've been using Inbox.com for a few years now. It's fairly simple and works. I'm sure there's better...

Thanks for all the replies. I have checked out the other links and still nothing for me. (Liked GMX except for the fact it needs to open up a new window to use it instead of a tab in my browser.)

OK, several of you want to know why I do not like gmail.

#1 Poor organization. I know about labels but all my mail was still coming into my in box too. Then I was told I need to archive it on receiving it. OK, now it is no longer in my inbox but in my lablel areas. But now it is not letting me know when I have new mail. Also what is the deal with sent messages showing up in my inbox?

#2 Combining emails. I send an email, they reply and I reply to that one. It combines all 3 emails. This may be handy for some people but it is not how I organize. I want the emails to stay separate. Just because it is a reply to a previous email with this person does not mean it is on the same subject.

#3 email address must be at least 6 letters. I would like to use my actual name with only 4 letters. (no, I will not add extra filler characters like some mind controlled zombie, I am not THX1138)

#1 Labels are displayed as Bold (# unread) when unread messages are contained within. So, if you haven't been reading a particular label's messages the unread number will just increase. Technically, all unread email is "new".

Sent messages aren't displayed in your inbox (like, compose a new message and send it)....

#2 ....However, The idea is that it's a conversation view. I guess it's to taste, but the vast majority of people find it very useful. Your emails/replies are displayed within the conversation. It's the same thing when they quote your previous message when replying...just easier to track who sent what and when.

#3 Can't help you there. However, chances are that your name (only four characters) is taken anyway with most large webmail services, you could try firstname.lastname@gmail.com

But yes, it is all to taste. I bet you'd find gmail to your liking if you gave it some time.

If you can't find a webmail service you like, there's always building your own webmail server (or paying for the hosting) and installing something like Horde/IMP (which I despise), Zimbra, Roundcube, etc...

Goober, Thanks for the reply.

With regards to #1 I guess I needed to clarify more. I have gmail preview on my home page. Unread messages that are not in my inbox (ie archived) do not show up. In other words, since most of my mail is sorted with labels and goes directly to archive, I never get new mail notification in the mail preview.

Sent messages are being displayed in my inbox. I dont know why.

#2 I just need some way to break apart the grouped messages once in a while then this would not be a big deal. Like I said there are times when the subject changes so it is no longer a part of the "conversation".

As for giving gmail time, how long is enough? I have had it for over a year as my backup email.
